Shine City Project
Las Vegas Wash
Saturday, March 2, 2019
On March 2, 2019, Shine City Project participated in the semi-annual Las Vegas Wash Green-Up! Joining about 150 volunteers on Saturday morning, we helped to plant more than 7,000 plants across 8.5 acres along the Las Vegas Wash! Though the service project started with some rain and wind, that didn't stop us from doing the service project! The skies eventually cleared up, and we were able to enjoy the nice weather.
Out of our group of thirteen volunteers, four volunteers joined us for the first time! Mia and Haylee, who are new to Shine City Project, share their experiences below.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to do some digging and planting while meeting some amazing individuals! It was a peaceful morning even though it was cold and it rained. I hope to have another opportunity to help out again!" – Haylee
"I really enjoyed being able to see how many other people were working hard to take care of our environment. It inspired me to know that so many people were willing to go out there despite the cold and rain to give back to the community." – Mia
Michelle, a volunteer who often joins the service projects with one of her parents, was able to also invite and bring her younger sister for the first time! Michelle shares about overcoming her own negative thoughts and feelings while doing her best to grow her character and self-confidence.
"During these service projects, I like to reassure myself and practice positive self-talk. Sometimes I start saying things to myself that I can't do it or it's too difficult. But in reality, I CAN do anything that I put my mind to. Moving from plant to plant, I try to love each plant and the soil that nurtures it. I also challenged myself to do the ones that didn't have a hole already. They required a little bit more work, but it felt nice to put in 110% of everything that I've got." – Michelle
