Let us overcome the world with the hope of the resurrection.
(3/31/2024 text: 1 Peter 1:3-9)
When Jesus told Martha in Bethany that her dead brother would live again, Martha replied, "I know that you will live again in the resurrection on the last day." When Jesus asked, "I am the resurrection and the life: whosoever believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die—do you believe this?" and Martha replied, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who is coming into the world" (John 11:23-27).
The resurrection is when the dead come back to life as they were before death, but the resurrection that Jesus taught is the resurrection of the body of eternal life. The Lord has said that whoever hears me and believes in God the Father will have eternal life and will not come to judgment (John 5:24), and the resurrection is when the Lord raises those who believe in Him to eternal life on the last day (John 6:39-40).
The Apostle Peter explained the meaning of the resurrection when he said, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his abundant mercy, has regenerated us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, so that we may have a living hope, and an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading, which he has reserved for you in heaven" (1 Peter 1:3-4).
He also tells us to look forward to the coming of the Lord who will save us through resurrection life at the end of the last days, and not to be troubled by the various temptations of the world, but to rejoice in them, considering them as trials of faith. Furthermore, Peter says that we must rely on God's power to go out. Jesus Christ emphasized that in the birth of Nana, we are glorified by the faith of the resurrection (1 Peter 1:5-7).
The Apostle Paul said to the Corinthians, "Behold, I tell you a mystery, we shall not all sleep, but shall all be changed in an instant, suddenly, at the last trumpet, and the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. This perishable thing shall put on immortality, and this mortal thing shall put on immortality" (1 Corinthians 15:51-53).
Furthermore, in his letter to the Thessalonian Christians, he exhorts them to encourage one another, believing that they can overcome the world with the hope of the resurrection. When the Lord comes, the dead in Christ will rise first, and those who survive will be caught up with them in the clouds to receive the Lord, and they will be with Him forever (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
He also said to the Colossians, "Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think not of the things above, and not of the things of the earth. for ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, you will also appear with him in glory (Col. 3:1-4)."
As we await the coming of our Savior from heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ, He will transform our lowly bodies into the likeness of His glorious Body by His miraculous works of power (Philippians 3:20-21). Therefore, we, the saints, should not be shaken by the troubles of the world, but should be more diligent in the work of the Lord with the faith of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:57-58).
As we approach Easter, let us consider whether our faith will be able to participate in the resurrection on the day of the Lord's coming. Living in a generation full of sin, we should confess our sins and transgressions to God daily (1 John 1:9) and become holy by communing with God through His Word and prayer. Then the Holy Spirit will intercede for us and be with us in preparation for the Lord's coming.
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved: for with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation" (Rom. 10:9-10). May you overcome the world with the hope of the resurrection in Jesus Christ (1 John 2:17).
Sermon Quotes for March 31, 2024: Let us overcome the world with the hope of the resurrection
(John 11:23-27) "[23] Jesus said to him, "Your brother will live again." [24] Martha said to him, "I know that I will live again in the resurrection on the last day." [25] Jesus said to him, "I am the resurrection and the life: whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, [26] and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
(John 5:24) "Verily, verily, I say to you, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."
(John 6:39-40) "[39] To do the will of him that sent me, that I should not lose any of those who gave me, but that I should raise him up at the last day.
(1 Peter 1:3-4) "[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his abundant mercy, hath regenerated us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that we may have a living hope, [4] and an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and unfailing, which he has reserved for you in heaven."
(1 Peter 1:5-7) "[5] You have been preserved by the power of God through faith, that you may receive the salvation which he has prepared to be revealed in the last days, [6] wherefore you were now compelled to be grieved for a little while because of various temptations, but you rejoice exceedingly, [7] so that the trial of your faith may be more precious than gold, which shall be tried by fire and not perish, so that you may have praise and glory and honor at the appearing of Jesus Christ."
(1 Corinthians 15:51-53) "[51] Behold, I tell you a mystery, we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in an instant, suddenly, at the last trumpet, [52] and the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall also be changed.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) "[13] We do not want you to know concerning those who sleep, brethren, lest you mourn as others who have no hope. [14] If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also those who sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. [15] We say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who remain alive will by no means precede those who sleep, until the Lord comes. [16] And the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, who died in Christ. [17] And then we who are alive will be caught up with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, so that we may always be with the Lord.
(Colossians 3:1-4) "[1] Therefore, if you have been raised together with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. [2] Think not of what is above, but of what is on earth, [3] for you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
(Philippians 3:20-21) "[20] But our citizenship is in heaven, where we wait for a Savior, even the Lord Jesus Christ, [21] who will transform our lowly bodies into the likeness of his glorious body by the work of him who is able to make all things subject to himself."
(1 Corinthians 15:57-58) "[57] We give thanks to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ, [58] wherefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."
(1 John 1:9) "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
(Romans 10:9-10) "[9] If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
(1 John 2:17) "The world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."
