Titles of Servants and their Significances
나는 처음에 이곳에 와서 나 자신을 현지인들에게 소개할 때 “I am a Korean missionary in Tuba City 나는 투바시티에 있는 한국선교사입니다"라고 했다.
“I am pastor Lee in Tuba City 투바시티의 이목사입니다"라고 소개하기 때문이다.
Titles of Servants and their Significances
Deacon, Encourager(Gwon-Sa), Elder, Pastor, Missionary, Etc.
Especially in mission fields...
The utmost assumption is that the titles in the Christian services do not mean any hierarchical power, privilege, or honor of them.
I used to introduce myself "I am a Korean missionary in Tuba City" when I came here first.
It meant, I am a Korean, came here for ministry purpose, and living in Tuba City.
I now less say this but maybe more in different statement.
"I am pastor Lee in Tuba City."
Honestly, I rarely consider myself to be a missionary.
Maybe, I might prefer the title pastor due to my 20 years local church ministry in New Jersey.
But, in my own pastoring ministry, I did not like the title because, I never considered myself to be a good pastor.
I even thought of myself not to be the right person for the job.
But I could not deny to be called a pastor because I have been intended, trained, ordained for and doing the very ministry.
In times of transition to be here though, people, especially from out there, began to call me a missionary.
Even the term missionary sounded somewhat strange but I could not deny or refuse because that was me.
Still, however, I claim to be a pastor here in the mission field.
And, the local people are calling me pastor Lee.
What's the difference between missionary and pastor?
They all are serving God's business but, a missionary is one who came from outside, and a pastor is the one who's doing ministry locally.
I want to be known as the one who is living in local and serving the local.
I heard a question one day from someone contacting me for any co-serving perspective while I was thinking of these things.
"Which title am I supposed to call you, pastor or missionary?"
I appreciated his concern of my title.
I can not deny to be called a missionary but, even though I am not still worthy of a good pastor, I am so much thankful to be a pastor.
So, as some local people asking me, "Which church are you pastoring," which one is my church and who are my church members?
The answer became more obvious since the beginning of our Pastors Community Services in last February.
"This tent is my church and you, who doesn't even come to my church to worship together on Sunday, is my church member."
Here, the Reservation, especially the western part of it is my church and they are my church members who also are His people.
Why the title pastor that used to be a burden for me in New Jersey became much more comfortable here in the Reservation?
Of course because of God's grace.
I feel more of it here and now.
Tolerating, guiding, encouraging, and being pleased grace of God, I feel more in here.
Of course, His grace for me never being different even in those times of my struggling.
Maybe, if there any difference between there and here, then and now, these local people accept me without any condition or prerequisite.
I am still the shortcoming, but they are appreciating and happy with my needle, and a message more than I may deserve.
Due to their love, I am enjoying the never-changing abundant grace of God more here and now.
The pastor must not be a title of honor, prestige, or privilege.
Of course, serving God has its own spiritual value.
But the value of serving God is not solely belong to a pastor.
Regardless of position, title, and service, every servant should be valued and respected equally.
If any pastor value him/herself more than any other servant, I might think of him/her to be a self-glorifying false servant who's abusing the title for his own gaining and reputation.
I don't want to think of the possibility to see that kind of person but it might be myself who's doing the wrong thing.
I may heard that there some discriminations of those different church offices in mission field so that they prefer the same title missionary rather than offices of pastor, deacon, etc.
I said "may" with some doubt of that being true.
If that was true, however, all parties involved in this case maybe failing to focus on the true basics but got into some kind of competition for titles.
(In this case, I think the pastor who treat other officers inferior is the beginning of the problem.)
IF, any pastor asking extra favor with the possible publicizing ability in a restaurant...
IF, any pastor not paying for legitimate business service for the church asking to be a free donation rather...
IF, any pastor abusing the ministry to be his/her own bread-winning or name sake...
IF, any pastor doing the ministry as a tool for his/her own agenda but not for His glory as the goal...
How can these be true...
But I am fearing for the possibility of that I might be the one.
I'd better focus on what is truly important.
May I understand the text and context deeply, serve His people sincerely, and humble before Him and people even lower.
I am concerned for myself.
Meanwhile, the Grace of God, and the happiness of those whom I serve, that's what I need.
Thanks for your partnership in serving God here and also glorify our heavenly Father for our partnership.
