Sturdy Hope: Spirituality and Justice-making

Purpose:
• to enter into a depth of community that is respectful and supportive
• to provide time for prayerful discernment and reflection as an
integrated compliment to lives of service and action
• to connect justice-making with the restoration of our souls through a
variety of spiritual practices
• to reflect on the spiritual foundations and images that ground us
spiritually in justice-making work
The retreat will endeavour to:
• be safe and respectful
• be still and not frenetic or busy
• build community
• move toward depth and renewal
A sampling of topics to be covered are:
Scarcity and Abundance
• identifying the harsh realities of scarcity in resources, time and
energy while integrating the gospel reality of abundance, blessing and grac
Suffering and Compassion
• lamenting the suffering, tragedy and heartbreak of the world while
holding up the communion of compassion, connection and heart song
Solitude and Solidarity
• honoring our essential aloneness as we immerse ourselves in the
complexity of creating right relationship
Discerning Our Commitments
Leadership for this event is provided by: Rev. Dr. Cathy Campbell.
Cathy is currently rector of St. Matthew’s Anglican Parish in the
inner-city West Central region of Winnipeg. In her four years in this
parish she has launched significant renovations for St.
Matthew’s-Maryland Community Ministry (an ecumenically shared
Anglican/United Church ministry) that operates from the building. She is
currently investigating a remarkable initiative for reclaiming housing
space in the church.
Ted Dodd
Ted joined the CCS program staff in July of 1998. Ted has worked in new
church development, as United Church Conference staff for Worship,
Education and Justice, with an amalgamating congregation as interim
minister , in a rural four-point charge, and as a staff associate. In
2003, Ted became the first person in the United Church to switch order
of ministry designation from ordained to diaconal. He is certificated in
Conflict Mediation and currently is finishing a DMin program in the area
of transformational learning. He is on the board of St. Matthew’s
Maryland Community Ministry and serves on the UCC Conference of Manitoba
and Northwestern Ontario Affirming task group.
Cost: $550
This is a residential event and participants will be asked to commit to
the entire experience. The fee includes the cost of accommodation and
meals Monday, February 18-Friday, February 22. All meals at the convent
are held in silence. Registration is limited. If participants wish to
