MANILA - Police confirmed Monday that two people who died after drinking milk tea at a store in Sampaloc, Manila have tested positive for oxalic acid.
Chief Superintendent Theresa Ann Cid, director of the Philippine National Crime Laboratory, said the cadaver of Suzaine Dagohoy tested positive for oxalic acid. Oxalic acid is described as a poisonous, colorless substance that will not be easily determined when dissolved in water or beverages.
"About 10 µg/mL (micrograms per milliliter) of oxalic acid is considered dangerous amount. The average human body contains approximately four (4) liters of blood, therefore, it will only take about 40mg of oxalic acid to poison a human body which can potentially lead to a person's death," Cid said in a press statement.
"We detected an amount of oxalic acid, more than the lethal dose was ingested...There was more than enough to kill a person," she said in a separate interview.
Dagohoy's cause of death was earlier listed as "shock probably secondary to ingestion of toxic substance", according to the Manila Police District Crime Laboratory Office (MPDCLO).
MPD Director Chief Superintendent Rolando Nana said the second victim, William Abrigo, owner of Ergo Cha Milk Tea House, also tested positive for oxalic acid based on the MPDCLO chemistry report.
Dagohoy and Abrigo both died after drinking milk tea from the shop last April. Dagohoy's boyfriend, Arnold Aydalla, was also hospitalized after drinking some of the tea.
The MPD chief said the milk tea, Hokkaido powder, and syrup, recovered from Ergo Cha Milk Tea House were found to be positive for oxalic acid per examination conducted by the CHEMPRO Analytical Services Laboratories, Inc., a private laboratory analyzing various types of samples, through the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
Police have filed murder charges against Abrigo's son. One of the victim's family members questioned the younger Abrigo's movements before and after the incident.
Abrigo allegedly left the hospital while his father was in critical condition.
He also appeared to to have cleaned up the crime scene.
"The boy said, according to his statement, that he shut off the CCTV. But the CCTV is there to determine who goes in and out (of the premises). Why did he turn it off? Why did he throw out the contents of the pitcher? What was in the pitcher? Why did he use gloves if he knew the pitcher did not have poison?" Federick Dagohoy, brother of Suzaine, told ABS-CBN News.
