1. The most important attitude [which you will have to develop in order to learn a foreign language successfully] is that learning a language requires constant practice.
2. Southwest of Omaha, Nebraska, lies Lincoln, the state's educational
and governmental center.
3. Not until the Korean war broke out did he make the machine.
4. Machines have made possible the mass production of all kind of goods.
원래는 possible과 the mass production of all kind of goods의 위치가 바뀌어야 하지만 목적어가 길기 때문에 문장의 균형을 맞추기 위해 목적어와 보어를 도치시킨 경우이다.
1. Reputation is what world believes us for the time; character is what we truly are.
해설- semicolon(;)은 but이나 while의 의미가 된다.
2. The whole world of art and literature and learning is international; what is done in one country is not done for that country but for mankind.
3. Humans, computers and animals could be said in some sense to think. Yet the thought processes of each of these would be different: each would have its own strengths and its own weaknesses.
4. We need three kinds of support: economic, political and moral.
1. Our civilization is the sum of the knowledge and memories accumulated by the generations that have gone before us.
해설- accumulated는 과거분사로 앞의 명사 knowledge와 memories를 꾸미며, accumulated 앞에는 [관계대명사+ be동사]인 which are가 생략되어 있다.
예2. When Sir Winston Churchill died, the spontaneous outpouring of admiration and affection from all over the world was a tribute to a great and noble man.
해설- from all over the world는 형용사구로 앞의 admiration and affection을 수식한다.
예3. The school has always been the most important means of transferring the wealth of tradition from one generation to the next.
1. The human heart is divided into four chambers, each of which serves its own function in the cycle of pumping blood.
해설- 계속적 용법의 관계대명사는 [접속사+대명사]로 해석하는데, 이때 접속사는 문맥에 따라 and, but, for, though 중에서 적절한 접속사를 선택한다. each of which는 and each of them의 뜻으로 [그들 각각]으로 해석한다.
예2. In 1875 he visited Rome, where he was much impressed by the works of great sculptors of the past.
3. In recent years computer technology has progressed rapidly, producing faster and more accurate machines which are smaller and less expensive than earlier models.
1. People did not realize that the best way to prevent illness was to get rid of wastes and to purify the drinking water.
위에서 and는 명사구 to get rid of wastes 와 purify the drinking water를 연결하고 있다.
예2. In the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries so many people were attracted by the apparent simplicity of banking and the high profits, that many mushroom banks started up and bankruptcies were frequent.
1. What is certain is that, in the twentieth century, nationalism, the historical product of certain political institutions, geographical facts, and economic development in western Europe, has swept round the world to become the greatest lever of change in our days.
참고로 certain political institutions와 geographical facts, 그리고 development in western Europe은 모두 the historical product of의 of에 걸린다.
예2. Also, the fact that many spoiled, beautiful women do not bother to develop intellectually relying on their physical charms for success in life, has led the world to believe that such women are stupid.
해설- the fact와 that절이 동격관계이다. 이 때 the fact는 주요어가 되고 that절이 동격어구(Appositive)가 된다. 한편 동격의 that절을 취하는 명사에는 fact 외에 idea, feeling, impressing, rumor, conclusion, news, knowledge 등이 있다.
예3. Our young cat Min, which has been absent five cold nights-her first absence-had at length returned at daylight.
해설- 위 문장에서 which has been absent five cold nights는 뒤에 her first absence와 동격관계가 된다.
글의 논리적 관련성은 and, but, for 등의 등위접속사나 however, moreover, for example 등의 접속부사와 같은 pattern signal(앞뒤 문장의 논리적 패턴을 알려주는 말들)을 통해 파악할 수 있다.
(1) 병렬적 정보결합인 not only A but also B, both A and B 등에서는, A와 B가 동일한 내용이거나 동일한 어감을 주는 말로 이루어진다.
In the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries so many people were attracted by the apparent simplicity of banking and the high profits, that many mushroom banks started up and bankruptcies were frequent. Every bankruptcy meant not only the failure of the banker but _____ to the depositors and borrowers. Commercial life became very insecure so that the government in 1844 passed the Bank Charter Act to regularize banking.
(a) prosperity (b) hardship
(c) peace (d) opportunity
해설- not only와 but (also)는 같은 내용의 어구를 순접으로 연결하기 때문에 빈칸에는 not only 다음에 나오는 the failure (of the banker)와 비슷한 내용의 어구가 이어져야 한다.
(2) 역접의 의미를 갖는 병력 연결장치들인 A but B 또는 not A but B에서, A와 B는 서로 역접의 내용이 되어야 한다.
Many a pretty girl is like a flower which is admired for its beautiful appearance, but despised for its _____.
(a) unpleasant odor (b) fascinating color
(c) short life (d) ugly shape
해설- A but B로 이어진 구문에서는 A와 B가 역접관계가 된다.
A is to B what X is to Y구문이나 A is no more B than C is D 또는 As A ~ so B 구문 등이 이에 속한다.
As even the finest landscape, seen daily, becomes monotonous, so the most beautiful face becomes _____, unless a beautiful nature shines through it. Whereas goodness, displayed through the most ordinary features, is perennially lovely.
(a) noble (b) strange
(c) familiar (d) routine
해설- (just) as ~ so 용법이므로, as절과 so절은 서로 비례관계가 성립해야 한다. 따라서 위 문제의 경우에는 the finest landscape: monotonous= the most beautiful face : ( )라는 등식이 성립되고, 따라서 이 때 빈칸에는 monotonous와 비슷한 의미인 (d) routine이 들어가야 한다.
(4) 동의문(同意文) 부연장치로 쓰이는 동격어구 표시어로는 that is, in other words, namely 등이 있다.
Although we all possess the same physical organs for perceiving the world-eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, noses for smelling, skins for feeling, and mouths for tasting-our perception of the world depends to a great extent on the language we speak. In other words, we cannot perceive things that _____. Each language is like a pair of sunglasses through which we "see" the world.
(a) do not exist (b) we refuse to sense
(c) we have not named (d) are complex linguistically
(5) 예시를 나타내는 연결어구로는 for example, for instance, such as, like, as follows, including, especially, particularly, namely 등이 있다.
The atomic theory of matter states that molecules can be broken down into atoms. These atoms will then rearrange themselves and form different molecules. Many discoveries were made based on this theory. For example, _____ was developed when scientists learned how to convert small amounts of matter into large amounts of energy.
(a) molecules (b) atoms
(c) the atom bomb (d) the atomic theory
(6) 대조장치의 연결어구에는 but, though, however, nevertheless, nonetheless, still, anyway, notwithstanding, for all, with all, in spite of, despite, all the same 등이 있다.
She had never expected to be wealthy. She was used to being without money. However, as times went on, she found herself _____ the special privileges and luxuries money could buy. If the time came again when she had to do without money, she would find it hard.
(a) abandoning (b) criticizing
(c) enjoying (d) escaping
(7) 결과를 나타내는 연결어구로는 while, whereas, therefore, hence, thus, consequently, for this reason, as a result, accordingly 등이 있다.
The school has always been the most important means of transferring the wealth of tradition from one generation to the next. This applies today in an even highest degree than in former times. For though modern development of the economic life, the family as bearer of tradition and education has been weakened. The continuance and health of human society is therefore in a still higher degree _____ .
(a) dependent on the school than formerly
(b) of service to school
(c) independent of the development of a community
(d) a mere tool of a community
해설- The school has always been the most important means(학교는 가장 중요한 수단이 되고) the family as bearer of tradition and education has been weakened(전통과 교육의 담당자로서의 가족은 약화되었다.)- therefore- human society is ( )의 논리 관계로 이어진 글
(1) Topic Sentence
What is the essence of law? On the on hand, it takes away from private citizens the right of revenge, which it confers upon the government. If a man steals your money, you must not steal it back, or thrash him, or shoot him; you must establish the facts before a neutral tribunal, which indicts upon him such punishment as has seemed just to the disinterested legislators. On the other hand, when two men have a dispute, the law provides a machinery for settling it, agin on principles laid down in advance by neutrals.
이 글의 제목은 the essence of law 또는 the nature of law가 적당하다.
(2) Topic Sentence
Friendship is above reason, for though you find virtues in a friend, he was your friend before you found them. It is a gift that we offer because we must; to give it as the reward of virtue would be to set a price upon it.
(3) Topic Sentence
The convenience and economy of small automobiles account for their popularity. (a) They are easy to park quickly and take smaller parking spaces. (b) Small automobiles are also a means of conserving energy because they consume less gasoline than big automobiles. (c) Small vehicles are inconvenient and uncomfortable on long trips, however, because of their limited passenger and truck room. (d) They are also more economical to operate and maintain, and they cost less. Because of all these advantages, the demand for small automobiles remains high.
