머리말

In 1956, the Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikkhu gave a series of lectures to a group of prospective judges, which were subsequently edited and arranged into what became The Handbook for Mankind.

1956년에 붓다다사 스님은 예비 판사들에게 일련의 강연을 하였습니다. 이 강연 내용(법문)을 정리하고 편집한 책이 '인류의 핸드북'입니다.

Since then, the success of this small book has been astounding. Well over 100,000 copies have been printed in Thai, and the book still enjoys widespread popularity, more than three decades after the original talks. The reason for the "Handbook's" duration is clear: that the Venerable Buddhadasa offers fresh insights into a timeless Truth (Dhamma), in the direct and simple manner that characterizes all his teaching. The clarity of his insight brings the Dhamma to life, so that today, a new generation of readers, not yet born at the time of these talks, can find meaning in his words.

그 후, 이 작은 책은 놀랄만하게 많이 읽혀졌습니다. 태국에서 10만부 이상 인쇄되었으며, 강연 후 30년이 지난 지금까지도 책은 여전히 널리 읽혀지고 있습니다. '인류의 핸드북'이 지속적으로 읽혀지는 이유는 분명합니다. 붓다다사 스님은 자신의 모든 가르침에서 나타나는 바와 같이 직접적이고 간단하게 시간을 초월한 진리(담마) 속으로 신선한 통찰을 해 주기 때문입니다. 붓다다사 스님의 명확한 통찰은 담마를 삶에 적용하게 하므로 이 강연 당시 태어나지 않은 오늘날의 새로운 독자들도 법문에 있는 의미를 파악할 수 있습니다.

As a guide for newcomers to the Buddha-Dhamma (the Truth which the Buddha awakened to and subsequently taught), this book is an invaluable guide. In it are contained the essential teachings of Buddhism. The "Handbook" is especially useful for those who approach the Buddha's teaching, not as a subject for scholarly study, but as a means to understand and ennoble their lives.

붓다 담마(붓다께서 깨닫고 그 후에 가르치신 진리)에 입문하는 자를 위한 안내로서, 이 책은 대단히 귀중한 안내서입니다. 이 책에는 불교의 본질적인 가르침이 포함되어 있습니다. 이 책은 학문적 연구의 대상으로서가 아니라 자신의 삶을 이해하고 고귀하게 하기 위한 수단으로서 붓다의 가르침에 접근하고자 하는 사람들에게 특히 유용합니다.

The Handbook for Mankind was originally published in English by the Sublime Life Mission, but has long been out of print. With their permission, we have reprinted this book, making some corrections where necessary, but leaving the text otherwise intact. Our thanks are due to Mr. Pun Chongprasoed, who first put this book together in Thai, and to all the people whose effort has made possible the reprinting of this book.

'인류의 핸드북'은 처음에 '서브라임 라이프 포교회(the Sublime Life Mission)'에 의해 영어로 발행되었습니다. 그러나 오랫동안 절판되어 왔습니다. 포교회의 허가를 얻어 몇 부분을 수정하여 다시 출판하였습니다. 그러나 나머지 책 내용에는 손대지 않았습니다. 이 책을 태국어로 처음에 편집한 푼 총프라소드 님(Mr. Pun Chongprasoed)에게 감사드리며 이 책이 재출판되도록 힘쓰신 모든 분들에게 감사드립니다.
