[July 16] Moon Jae-In, a leading runner of the
Democratic United Party for the Presidential election, proves his
corporate-friendly position
Moon Jae-In, a
Permanent Advisor and a leading runner of the Democratic United Party (main
opposition party) for the Presidential election in December visiting Jeju, told
that “The current Civilian-Military Complex Tour Beauty [project] is different
from the original plan under the Participatory Government [of Ex-President Roh
Moo-Hyun],” and he would “drive to stop the Jeju naval base project and totally
re-examine the project.”
He said, “During
the Participatory Government, it was framed as a port of call for the
civilian-military complex when the National Assembly budget was passed in 2007.
It was planned to be a port centered on the civilian port where military
vessels can temporally touch, getting supply and maintain equipments, when
needed.”
Comparing the
concept of port of call with the Civilian Military Complex Tour Beauty project
(by which the military function is in fact 100 %) under the Lee Myung Bak
government, he also mentions that democratic procedures have been ignored
during the drive to enforce the project in the Gangjeong village under the Lee
Myung Bak government.
But emphasizing the
security importance of the Island, he said that he would also consider to build
a base in another part of the Island, along with a plan to build a new airport
in the Island, which could be suspected of military use.
His words, though
seem to be promising at first glance, have actually brought upon criticism by
the Gangjeong villagers.
The Gangjeong
villagers stated in their opinion letter to him:
“The Jeju naval
base project not only damages environment and ecology of Jeju in its
construction process but also not to fit to the long term vision of Jeju.”
The villagers also
demanded him to promptly drive to stop the project saying, “Currently, only 17%
of budget has been used while construction rate is 15%. Solution measures to
stop the waste of budget and to protect nature and environment can be found.”
Moon’s position is
nothing but the reflection of conservative leadership of the Democratic United
Party whose connection with Samsung has been much suspected. It should be
reminded that the concept of ‘participatory government,’ has come from the
brain of Samsung during the ex-Roh Moo Hyun government.
Moon’s corporate
–friendly class position is well reflected in his words:
“The Participatory
government planned to build the Jeju as a good example of International Freedom
City and Special Self-Governing [..] a symbol of Maritime Korea.” His so called
special strategy for the ‘Eco-Island, Jeju, the Peace Island,’ will be again
for the corporate-oriented eco and peace industry.
