Shine City Project
Wetlands Park (Sunrise Trailhead)
Saturday, January 12, 2019
On January 12, 2019, our Shine City Project volunteers returned to Wetlands Park! It was our third time to join the Wetlands Park staff and other volunteers in recent months, but this time we joined them for a cleanup at Sunrise Trailhead!
Wetlands Park has an important role in helping to filter and clean the water that comes from Las Vegas to Lake Mead while providing a habitat for animals that live and visit the area. Wetlands Park has miles of trails for people to enjoy, but there are visitors who are unable to show care for the park. Filling our bags with many broken bottles and glass and a wide assortment of litter, we were able to help fill a large dumpster by the end of the service project.
In our group of 12 volunteers, we had a couple families join the service project together. One volunteer, Michelle, who previously joined a couple service projects before with her dad, was able to bring her mom for the first time. Additionally, another volunteer, Robert, was able to share the experience with his brother, nephew, niece, and sister-in-law who also joined for the first time. Although it was a chilly morning, it was heart-warming to see families working together!
Several of our volunteers share about their experiences:
"I took part in the activity with my friends as a member of Shine City Project. We cleaned up Wetlands Park by picking up garbage. There was a lot of garbage there, and there were also many people gathered who took part in the activity. We may not have been able to pick up everything perfectly, but we tried to clean up and cooperate together. We also met people whom we met before last month at Wetlands Park. They remembered us. I feel that having a wider circle of people is very meaningful and important. The service project was a really fulfilling experience for me." - Katsu
"I really love that I can be with people who are happy to care for the community. As I was cleaning up, I kept thinking about how much trash is out there. This event is something that everyone should participate in because it genuinely shows how much they care! I loved seeing the passion in others and the kindness in helping others carry things back to the dumpster! I also really loved seeing all the kids there because the parents are teaching them benefiting and loving values." - Michelle
"I had a great day today getting out to the Wetlands Park to help with the massive cleanup. I think there were over 100 people involved, and everyone was doing their share. I was especially happy to see so many children learning to help the community. The park was beautiful and Shine City Project did more than most. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and got some great photos." - Monica
