『Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge』, Karl Popper, Routledge, 2009(초판: 1963)
Popper(43쪽): When I received the list of participants in this course and realized that I had been asked to speak to philosophical colleagues I thought, after some hesitation and consultation, that you would probably prefer me to speak about those problems which interest me most, and about those developments with which I am most intimately acquainted.
Popper(44쪽): that science is distinguished from pseudo-science – or from ‘metaphysics’ – by its empirical method, which is essentially inductive, proceeding from observation or experiment.
Popper(44쪽): There was a lot of popular nonsense talked about these theories, and especially about relativity (as still happens even today), but I was fortunate in those who introduced me to the study of this theory.
Popper(45쪽): This shows that it was not my doubting the truth of those other three theories which bothered me, but something else.
l “but something else”를 빼 먹었다.
Popper(45쪽): who refused to see it, either because it was against their class interest, or because of their repressions which were still ‘un-analysed’ and crying for treatment.
Popper(46쪽): not only in the news, but also in its presentation – which revealed the class bias of the paper – and especially of course in what the paper did not say.
Popper(46쪽): The Freudian analysts emphasized that their theories were constantly verified by their ‘clinical observations’.
Popper(46쪽): Once, in 1919, I reported to him a case which to me did not seem particularly Adlerian,
l “did not seem particularly Adlerian”는 “아들러의 이론에 특히 들어맞지 않는 것으로 보이는”이 아니라 “아들러의 이론에 딱히 들어맞지는 않는 것으로 보이는”이다.
Popper(47쪽): The theory is incompatible with certain possible results of observation
Popper(47쪽): Confirmations should count only if they are the result of risky predictions; that is to say, if, unenlightened by the theory in question, we should have expected an event which was incompatible with the theory – an event which would have refuted the theory.
l “unenlightened by the theory in question”는 “그 이론을 모르는 상태에서”라는 뜻인 듯하다.
Popper(48쪽): I later described such a rescuing operation as a ‘conventionalist twist’ or a ‘conventionalist stratagem’.
Popper(48쪽): Even if our measuring instruments at the time did not allow us to pronounce on the results of the tests with complete assurance, there was clearly a possibility of refuting the theory.
Popper(48쪽): Astrologer were greatly impressed, and misled, by what they believed to be confirming evidence – so much so that they were quite unimpressed by any unfavourable evidence.
l “so much so”를 “또 그에 못지않게”로 잘못 번역했다.
Popper(48쪽): Moreover, by making their interpretations and prophecies sufficiently vague they were able to explain away anything that might have been a refutation of the theory had the theory and the prophecies been more precise.
“anything that might have been a refutation of the theory”는 논박에 쓰였을 수도 있는 증거들을 말하는 것이다.
Popper(49쪽, 주3): ‘Clinical observations’, like all other observations, are interpretations in the light of theories(see below, sections iv ff.); and for this reason alone they are apt to seem to support those theories in the light of which they were interpreted.
Popper(49쪽, 주3): But real support can be obtained only from observations undertaken as tests (by ‘attempted refutations’);
Popper(50쪽, 주3): To say nothing about the conscious attempts to influence the patient by proposing interpretations to him, etc.)
Popper(50쪽, 주3): This is a characteristic and recurrent theme of such myths, but one which seems to have failed to attract the interest of the analysts, perhaps not accidentally.
Popper(50쪽, 주3): The problem of confirmatory dreams suggested by the analyst is discussed by Freud, for example in Gesammelte Schriften, III, 1925,
영어판 전집은 “Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud(24권)”이다.
