V out N / V N out 구문은 “N이 끝날 때까지 V하다”라는 의미를 가지기도 합니다.
(1) wait out the storm은 “태풍이 끝날 때까지 기다리다”.
a. They had to wait out months of Republican obstruction.
b. After six months of disappointment, the couple took it off the market and decided to wait out the downturn.
c. In the entrance hall there is an area where expectant fathers can wait out the birthing process.
(2) wait out her opponent는 상대가 끝날 때까지, 즉 지쳐 기진맥진할 때까지 기다리다. wait 대신 tire를 써서 tire out her opponent라고 하면 적극적으로 공격하며 지치게 하는 것이고 wait을 쓰면 슬슬 수비 위주로 하며 (“She doesn't take unnecessary chances”) 상대가 지치기를 기다리는 모습입니다.
d. I have time and he doesn't, so I'll wait him out until he agrees to sell the business to me.
e. Most of her power is defensive and support based. Right? I would think her best chance would be to just survive the chaotic and deadly surroundings and wait out her opponent.
(3) sit은 “앉아만 있다”, 즉 무엇에 참여하지 않고 “빠져있다”는 의미입니다. sit out this game은 “게임이 끝날 때까지 빠져있다”가 되죠. 유사하게 sit on은 “~에 앉아만 있다”, 즉 “처리하지 않고 가지고만 있다”는 의미입니다:
d. The company has been sitting on my letter for weeks without dealing with my complaint.
(4) lived out his days “그의 생이 끝날 때까지 살았다”, 즉 여생을 보냈다.
