커셋 Mary Cassatt

프랑스의 인상파 화가들의 전시회에 참가했다. 그녀는 부유한 가문에서 태어나 초기생애의 대부분을 유럽에서 보냈다. 펜실베이니아 미술 아카데미에서 공부했으며(1861~65), 파리에서 한동안 샤를 조슈아 샤플랭과 함께 일하기도 했지만, 독자적으로 일하면서 옛 대가들의 작품을 모사하는 것을 즐겼다. 실제로 에드가 드가의 제자는 아니었지만, 그와 가깝게 사귀었으며 그에게 많은 영향을 받았다. 드가는 1874년의 살롱에 전시된 그녀의 출품작을 보고 크게 감탄했다. 드가의 권유로 인상파 화가들을 알게 된 뒤 그들과 함께 전시회를 가졌다. 그녀의 뛰어난 데생과 자연스러운 비대칭 구도에는 드가의 영향이 뚜렷이 나타나 있다. 또한 드가와 마찬가지로 파스텔을 매체로 혁신적이고 독창적인 기법을 사용했는데, 그녀의 뛰어난 대표작들 중에도 파스텔화가 몇 점 들어 있다.
처음에 커샛은 차를 마시거나 친구들과 함께 산책하고 있는 여자들을 주제로 한 인물화를 그렸다. 1890년 파리에서 대규모의 일본 판화 전시회가 열린 뒤 그녀는 10점의 다색 판화 연작을 발표했는데, 〈목욕하는 여자 Woman Bathing〉·〈머리장식 The Coiffure〉이 그것들로서 일본의 대가인 우타마로[歌麿]도요쿠니[豊國]의 영향을 뚜렷이 보여준다. 애쿼틴트, 드라이포인트, 소프트 그라운드를 결합한 이 에칭 판화들에서 그녀는 자신의 판화 기법을 완성했다. 그녀는 차츰 형태보다 선과 패턴을 강조했다. 1900년 이후 시력이 나빠지기 시작하여 1914년경에는 작품 활동을 중단할 수밖에 없었다. 그녀는 〈목욕 La Toilette〉(1892경, 시카고 미술연구소) 같은 전성기 작품에서 주로 아기들을 돌보고 있는 어머니를 모티프로 사용했다.
커샛은 미국의 부유한 친구들과 친척들에게 인상파 화가들의 그림을 살 것을 권함으로써 자신의 작품뿐만 아니라 미국의 미술 양식에 지속적인 영향을 미쳤다. 그녀는 뉴욕 시의 메트로폴리탄 미술관에 있는 H.O. 해브마이어 컬렉션의 작품 선정에 큰 몫을 했다.

이 그림 "르 피가로를 읽는 여인"은 커셋의 어머니 캐서린 커셋을 그린 그림입니다, 이 그림에서 커셋은 그녀의 그림을 통해서 성별적 고정관념이란 것이 얼마나 무시될 수 있는가를 보여줍니다,
즉 이 그림에서 캐서린은 여성잡지가 아닌 "남성주류의 신문인 르 피가로"를 읽는 것입니다. 이그림은 세잔의 "에벤망지를 읽고 있는 세잔의 아버지"라는 작품을 연상 시킵니다, 이작품을 잘보면 거울에 얼굴이 아닌 신문이 비칩니다, 이것은 앵그르같은 전통 작가들이 거울을 여성의 또 다른 얼굴이나 몸의 표정을 잡는 장치로 사용한데 대한 빈정 거림이기도 합니다.

"베르토 모리조" 와 "메리 커셋" 이 두사람은 여성 예술가가 독존하기 어려운 19세기 화단에서 두명의 "인상파" 여류화가로 당당히 이름을 올린 사람들입니다. 특히 커셋은 미국 피츠버그에서 양갓집 딸로 태어나 1873년 유럽에 정착합니다. 이때부터 커셋은 미국적 화풍에서 벗어나 마네의 화풍이 엿보이는작품들을 발표하면서 인상파로서 파리 화단에 등장합니다.

중성적인 검은 옷차림의 여자가 탐색하는 시선의 주인공으로 등장하여 남성의 규범을 조롱합니다.특히 이 여인은 검은 옷으로 몸을 완전히 가리고,그나마 얼굴마져도 쌍안경으로 가립니다, 커셋에서 여성은 "꽃"이 아니었습니다. 그러나 반대쪽에서의 남자의 쌍안경은 오히려 공간을 가로질러 그녀를 향하고 있어서, 커셋이 얼마나 자신감 넘치는 여성인지가 여실히 드러납니다
