David Pawson (born 1930) is viewed by many as Great Britain's greatest Bible teacher since Charles H. Spurgeon a century ago. After more than 50 years of Bible teaching, David Pawson's personal reputation and integrity has been untouched by scandal. But due to his conviction of following the teaching of Scripture even when it clashes with delivered (church) tradition, he is rarely uncontroversial. But he is generally respected for both his integrity and his conviction, even by those who disagree with him.
Since John Pawson preached with John Wesley in the 18th century, all the Pawsons have either been farmers or (Methodist) preachers or both. Since childhood David Pawson wanted to become a farmer, but by the time he had completed his studies for a BSc in Agriculture at Durham University, God had shown David very clearly and surprisingly that he wanted him in fulltime Christian ministry.
Studying for his M.A. degree in Theology at Cambridge University (under the Methodist church), under the influence of liberal teaching and liberal lecturers, David lost his faith in the Bible, and very nearly his faith itself. After a short spell in ministry for the Methodist church (including pastoring churches in the Shetland Islands) and doing evangelisation, David eventually regained his faith in the infallibility and inerrancy of the Bible as a chaplain in the British Royal Air Force. David was posted to Arabia (as chaplain for all non-Anglican and non-Roman Catholic denominations (and including atheists and agnostics!)), where his heretofore prepared topical sermons went down like lead balloons among the young airmen.
Exasperated, he eventually started preaching the Bible systematically from start to finish, and the results this produced in the servicemen surprised both him and them, and confirmed Scripture's inspiration. From then on David endeavoured to preach only the Bible.
However, on his return to Britain, this caused a major problem. Free from the religious tradition of Britain, and studying the Bible on its own terms, Pawson had become convinced that baby baptism, as practised in the methodist ministry, was not Biblical. He had reluctantly come to the conclusion that the New Testament knew only one type of baptism, believer's baptism. He was therefore unable to practice and apply baby baptism with honesty and integrity anymore, even though this could cost him the loss of his home, his income and his pension. Explaining to his young new wife, Enid, that they might lose everything over his stance on this issue, she replied, 'I want a man who pleases God rather than people.' Such principled stances on Biblical doctrine rather than church tradition - even in the face of persecution - become a mark of David Pawson's ministry. After appearing before a doctrinal committee of the Methodist church, Pawson was expected to leave the denomination, as he did.
But within 24 hours he received a call from Gold Hill Baptist Church in Buckinghamshire to become pastor there. Years later he also became pastor of the church where he had his greatest influence, the Millmead Centre - a Baptist church in Guildford, Surrey.
As pastor of Guildford Baptist Church (The Millmead Centre) David Pawson established a solid reputation among both evangelicals and charismatics as a highly effective and balanced expositor of the Bible. From here his teaching tapes - originally made for the church's sick and elderly members - became very popular worldwide.
Behind the communist Iron Curtain it stuck a chord with the persecuted church. Missionaries and spiritual leaders in far-off corners off the world without the opportunity to sit under a regular teaching ministry, also drew spiritual nourishment from Pawson's preaching. Even to this day, Pawson's teaching and sermons are regularly used by other preachers and church leaders, with marked success and impact.
Millmead became regarded as a model church among many Christians and under Pawson's ministry, it became the biggest Baptist church in Britain. Every Sunday many pastors from elsewhere sat under David Pawson's preaching, to learn and be encouraged. The church was unique in that church attendance was double the membership number - people came from as far afield as London to hear Pawson preach. Cliff Richard, who had been baptised by Pawson, was one noted member.
After being called to a wider preaching ministry, Pawson left Millmead in 1979 and engaged in an itinerant worldwide Bible teaching ministry, and this has been his main work up to now. He is a frequent speaker in the UK, although his speaking engagements have taken him to many other parts of the world, notably Australia, New Zeeland, South Africa, The Netherlands, Israel, Southeast Asia and the United States.
David Pawson currently resides in Basingstoke, Hampshire in southern England with his wife Enid. Although older now, he is still very busy with speaking engagements and has annual speaking appointments in Europe and at the Feast of Tabernacles in Israel, where his talks are held in high regard. He also speaks at different venues in Britain on invitation.
He has written a number of books including:
The steady popularity of Pawson's books, however, are far outstripped by his highly popular video and audio teaching messages available from authorised distributors:
