화가의 자화상은 작가의 자서전과 같다.
자화상은 유용한 역사적 기록 일 뿐 아니라
화가에 대해 더 많은 사실을 말해 준다.

화가의 성격과 개성뿐 아니라
화가가 어떻게 자신을 인식하고 다른 사람에게 기억되고 보여지기를 원하는 가를 알려준다.

화가는 거울에 비친 자신을 바라보며
자신의 삶과 직업, 미래에 대한 두려움이나
희망에 대해 자문한다.

이는 화가의 포즈.
입고 있는 옷, 시선의 방향 , 얼굴의 수많은 디테일 손에 들고 있거나 , 주위에 놓여진 물건
그리고 심지어는 의도적으로 혹은 무의식적으로 빠트린 것을 통해서도 우리에게 전해진다 .

자화상은 화가의 삶의 특별한 순간에 태어난다.

매우 다양한 동기들에 의해 유발된 이러한 특별한 순간은 때로는 알려져 있지만
때로는 화가 자신만 알고 있기도 하다 .
이러한 이유로 화가의 자화상은 사진 자료 보다 훨씬 더 중요하게 여겨진다.
