Ecclesiastes [iklìːziǽstiːz] n.〖성서〗 전도서(구약 성서 중의 한 편)

A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.

 - 좋은 이름이 좋은 향수보다 좋고, 죽는 날이 태어나는 날보다 좋다.

  perfume[pə́ːrfjuːm]  n. 향수.

It is better to go to a house of mourning / than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.

 - 초상집에 가는 것이 더 좋다 / 잔칫집에 가는 것보다, 죽음은 모든 사람들의 운명이기 때문이다; 살아있는 사람들은 이 말을 마음에 간직해야 할 것이다.

  mourning  n. 비탄, 슬픔; 초상.            house of mourning : 초상집.

  feast  n. 축제. v. 축제를 베풀다.          house of feasting : 잔칫집.

  destiny  n. 운명.

Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

 - 슬픔이 웃음보다 더 좋다, 왜냐하면 슬픈 얼굴은 마음에 알맞기 때문이다.

  sorrow[sɑ́rou]  n. 슬픔, 비애.           laughter [lǽftəːr]  n. 웃음.

  be good for : ~에 알맞다, 적당하다.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.

 - 현명한 사람의 마음은 초상집에 있지만, 바보들의 마음은 잔칫집에 있다.

  pleasure  n. 기쁨, 즐거움.

It is better to heed a wise man's rebuke / than to listen to the song of fools.

 - 현명한 사람의 꾸짖음에 주의하는 것이 더 좋다 / 바보들의 노래에 귀 기울이는 것 보다.

  heed  v. ~에 주의하다.          

  rebuke [ribjúːk]  n. 비난, 꾸짖음.

Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of fools. This too is meaningless.

 - 항아리 밑에서 가시의 탁탁 타는 소리와 같이, 바보들의 웃음이 그러하다. 이것 역시 허무하다.

  crackling [krǽkliŋ]  n. 탁탁 타는 소리. 

  thorn [ɵɔːrn]  n. 가시.                  pot [pɑt]  n. 항아리, 단지.

Extortion turns a wise man into a fool, and a bribe corrupts the heart.

 - 강탈하는 것은 현명한 사람을 바보로 만들고, 뇌물은 마음을 타락시킨다.

  extortion [ikstɔ́ːrʃən]  n. 강요, 강탈.

  bribe [braib] n. 뇌물.             corrupt [kərʌ́pt]  v. 타락(오염)시키다.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.

 - 일의 끝이 그것의 시작보다 더 낫고, 참을성이 자만심보다 더 낫다.

  patience [péiʃəns]  n. 인내, 참을성.

  pride [praid]  n. 자랑, 자존심; 자만심.

Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.

 - 네 영혼 속에서 급히 성내지 말라, 분노는 바보들의 무릎에 머물기 때문이다.

  provoke [prəvóuk]  v. 성나게 하다, 신경질 나게 하다.

  reside [rizáid]  v. (~ in) ~에 살다, 머무르다.

  lap  n. 무릎(허리에서 무릎까지 부분).

Do not say, "Why were the old days better than these?" For it is not wise to ask such questions.

 - 다음과 같이 말하지 말라, “왜 요즈음보다 옛날이 더 좋은가?” 그러한 질문을 하는 것은 현명하지 않기 때문이다.

  old days : 옛날, 예전.                   these days : 요즈음.

Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun.

 - 지혜는, 유산과 같이, 좋은 것이다 그리고 태양을 보는 사람들에게 이익이 된다.

  inheritance [inhéritəns]  n. 유산, 상속.

  benefit [bénəfit]  n. 이익, 이득.  v. ~에 이익이 되다.

Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor.

 - 돈이 은신처가 되듯이 지혜도 은신처이다, 그러나 지식의 장점은 이것이다 :

 지혜는 그 소유자의 삶을 보존한다는 점.

  shelter [ʃéltəːr]  n. 피난처, 은신처; 보호.

  advantage [ædvǽntidʒ]  n. 장점; 유리함, 우세.

  preserve [prizə́ːrv]  v. 보전(보존) 하다.

  possessor  n. 소유자.                    possess  v. 소유하다.

Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked?

 - 하나님께서 행하신 것을 생각해보라 : 누가 그분께서 구부리신 것을 펼 수 있겠는가?

  straighten [stréitn] v. 똑바르게 하다, 펴다.

  crooked [krúkid]  a. 구부러진, 꼬부라진.

When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future.

 - 시절이 좋을 때는, 행복해라; 그러나 시절이 나쁠 때는, 생각하라 :

하나님께서는 앞에 것 뿐만 아니라 뒤에 것도 만드셨다. 따라서, 사람은 자기 미래에 관하여 아무것도 발견할 수 없다.

  the one, the other : (둘 중) 한쪽은, 다른 한 쪽은.

  A as well as B : A뿐만 아니라 B도 또한.

In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: a righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.

 - 나의 이 허무한 삶 속에서 나는 이것들 둘 다 보아왔다 : 정직한 사람은 그의 정직함 속에서 죽어가고, 사악한 사람은 자기 사악함 속에서 오래 살아간다.

  righteous [ráitʃəs]  a. 정직한.

  perishing [périʃiŋ]  a. 죽어가는, 멸망하는.

  wicked [wíkid]  a. 악한, 사악한.

  wickedness  n. 사악함.

Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise-- why destroy yourself?

 - 지나치게 정직하려 하지 말고, 또한 지나치게 현명하려 하지 말라 -- 왜 네 자신을 파괴하는가?

  overrighteous  a. 지나치게 정직한.

  overwise  a. 지나치게 현명한.            

  over~ : 지나치게 ~한. (접두사로 쓰임)

  destroy  v. 파괴하다.

Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool-- why die before your time?

 - 지나치게 사악하지 말고, 바보가 되지도 말라 -- 너의 때가 되기전에 왜 죽는가?

It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes .

 - 하나를 붙잡고 다른 하나를 놔주지 않는 것이 좋다. 하나님을 경외하는 사람은 모든 극단들을 피해야 할 것이다.

  grasp [græsp]  v. 붙잡다.             fear  v. 두려워하다, 경외하다.

  avoid  v. 피하다.                    extreme [ikstríːm]  n. 극단, 극도.

Wisdom makes one wise man more powerful / than ten rulers in a city.

 - 지혜는 하나의 현명한 사람이 더 강하도록 만든다 / 도시에 있는 열명의 통치자 보다.

  ruler  n. 통치자, 지배자.

There is not a righteous man on earth / who does what is right and never sins.

 - 땅위에서 정직한 사람은 없다 / 올바른 것을 행하고 죄를 결코 행하지 않는(사람).

Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you-

 - 사람들이 말하는 모든 말에 주의를 두지 말라, 그렇지 않으면 너는 네 종이 너를 저주하는 것을 듣게 될지도 모른다.

  pay attention to : ~에 주의를 두다.          curse  v. 저주하다.

for you know in your heart / that many times you yourself have cursed others.

 - 왜냐하면 너는 네 맘속으로 알기 때문이다 / 너 스스로 다른 이들을 저주한 많은 시간들을 (알기 때문이다).

All this I tested by wisdom and I said, "I am determined to be wise"-- but this was beyond me.

 - 이 모든 것을 나는 지혜로써 시험했고 나는 말했다, “나는 현명해지기로 결정했다” -- 그러나 이것은 나를 넘어서는 것이었다.

  determine  v. ~하기로 결정하다.

  be determined to : ~할 작정이다, ~하기로 결심하다.

Whatever wisdom may be, it is far off and most profound-- who can discover it?

 - 지혜가 무엇이든지 간에, 그것은 멀리 있고 가장 심오하다 -- 누가 그것을 찾을 수 있겠는가?

  far off : 매우 멀리 있는.

  profound  a. 깊은; 심오한.

So I turned my mind / to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things / and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the madness of folly.

 - 그리하여 나는 내 마음을 돌렸다 / 지혜와 사물의 이치를 이해하고, 조사하고, 찾기로 / 그리고 사악함의 우둔함과 어리석음의 광기를 이해하기로 (마음을 돌렸다).

  investigate[invéstəgèit] 조사하다.

  scheme [skiːm] n. 계획, 계요.      

  scheme of things : (의역) 사물의 이치.

  stupidity [stjuːpídəti] n. 우둔함, 어리석음.

I find more bitter than death /  the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare.

 - 나는 죽음보다 더 지독하다는 것을 알았다 / 덫과 같고, 그 마음이 함정과 같으며 그 손이 쇠사슬과 같은 여자가 (더 지독하다는 것을). 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 사람은 그녀를 피할 것이나, 죄지은 자는 그녀가 함정에 빠드릴 것이다.

  bitter  a. 쓴, 지독한.                

  snare [snɛəːr] n. 덫, 올가미.

  trap  n. 함정, 올가미.

  escape [iskéip]  v. 달아나다, 탈출하다, 피하다.

  ensnare [ensnɛ́ər]  v. 함정에 빠뜨리다.

"Look," says the Teacher, "this is what I have discovered: "Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things-

 - “보라,” 전도자가 말한다, “이것이 내가 발견한 것이다: “사물의 이치를 발견하기위해 한 가지에 또 다른 것을 덧붙이며 -

while I was still searching but not finding-- I found one upright man among a thousand, but not one upright woman among them all.

 - 하지만 난 여전히 찾고 있지만 발견하지 못했다 -- 나는 천명 사이에서 한명의 정직한 남자를 찾았다, 그러나 그들 모두에서 한명의 정직한 여자는 찾지 못했다.

This only have I found: God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes."

26. I find more bitter than death the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare.

지혜는 유산을 받는 것만큼이나 좋은 것이니, 이 세상에서 살면서 그 덕을 보기 때문이다. 돈이 사람을 보호하듯, 지혜도 사람을 보호한다. 그러나 지혜를 깨우쳐 아는 지식이 더 좋은 까닭은, 지혜가 그 사람의 목숨을 살려 주기 때문이다. 하나님이 하시는 일을 생각해 보아라. 하나님이 구부려 놓으신 것을 누가 펼 수 있겠는가? 좋은 때에는 기뻐하고, 어려운 때에는 생각하여라. 하나님은 좋은 때도 있게 하시고, 나쁜 때도 있게 하신다. 그러기에 사람은 제 앞일을 알지 못한다. 헛된 세월을 사는 동안에, 나는 두 가지를 다 보았다. 의롭게 살다가 망하는 의인이 있는가 하면, 악한 채로 오래 사는 악인도 있더라.

그러니 너무 의롭게 살지도 말고, 너무 슬기롭게 살지도 말아라. 왜 스스로를 망치려 하는가? 너무 악하게 살지도 말고, 너무 어리석게 살지도 말아라. 왜 제 명도 다 못 채우고, 죽으려고 하는가? 하나를 붙잡되, 다른 것도 놓치지 않는 것이 좋다. 하나님을 두려워하는 사람은 극단을 피한다. 지혜는 슬기로운 한 사람을, 성읍을 다스리는 통치자 열 명보다 더 강하게 만든다. 좋은 일만 하고, 잘못을 전혀 저지르지 않는 의인은 이 세상에 하나도 없다.

남들이 하는 말에 마음을 쓰지 말아라. 자칫하다가는, 네 종이 너를 욕하는 것까지 듣게 된다. 너 또한 남을 욕한 일이 많다는 것을, 너 스스로 잘 알고 있다. 나는 이 모든 것을 지혜로 시험해 보았다. 내가 "지혜 있는 사람이 되어야지" 하고 결심해 보았지만, 지혜가 나를 멀리하더라. 지혜라는 것이 무엇인지, 너무도 멀고 깊으니, 누가 그것을 알 수 있겠는가? 그래도 나는 한 곳으로만 정신을 쏟아 보았다. 지혜가 무엇인지, 사물의 이치가 어떤 것인지를, 연구하고 조사하고 이해하려고 하였다. 사악이 얼마나 어리석은 일이며, 우매가 얼마나 미친 일인지를 깨닫는 데에 정신을 쏟아 보았다.

나는 또, 올가미와 같은 여자 마음이 덫과 같고 손이 쇠사슬과 같은 여자는 죽음보다 더 쓰다는 것을 알았다. 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드리는 남자는 그런 여자를 피할 수 있지만, 죄인은 그런 여자에게 걸려들고 말 것이다. 보아라, 전도자가 말한다. 내가 깨달은 것은 이것이다. 사물의 이치를 하나하나씩 찾아가는데, 아직도 얻지 못하였지만, 다만 찾으면서 깨달은 것은 오로지, 천 명 가운데서 남자 하나는 찾을 수 있어도, 천 명 가운데서 여자 하나는 찾지 못한다는 것이다. 그렇다. 다만 내가 깨달은 것은 이것이다. 하나님은 우리 사람을 평범하고 단순하게 만드셨지만, 우리가 우리 자신을 복잡하게 만들어 버렸다는 것이다.

Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man's face and changes its hard appearance.

 - 누가 현명한 사람과 같을까? 누가 사물들에 대한 설명을 알까?

  지혜는 사람의 얼굴을 밝게 하고 굳은 표정을 변화시킨다.

  explanation [èksplənéiʃən] n. 해설, 설명.

  brighten [bráitn] v. 밝게하다, 빛나게 하다.

  appearance [əpíərəns] n. 겉모습, 외모, 표정.

Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before God.

 - 왕의 명령에 복종하라고, 내가 말한다, 왜냐하면 네가 하나님 앞에서 맹세했기 때문이다.

  command  n. 명령.                

  obey  v. ~에 복종하다.

  take an oath : 맹세하다.          oath [ouɵ] n. 맹세.

Do not be in a hurry to leave the king's presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases.

 - 왕 앞에서 떠남에 있어 급하게 하지 말라. 나쁜 이유를 위해 나서지 말라, 그는 그가 하고 싶어 하는 무엇이든지 할 것이기 때문이다.

  in a hurry : 급히, 급하게.

  one's presence : ~의 면전에서, 앞에서.

  stand up for : ~을 위해 나서다.

  cause  n. 원인; 이유, 근거.

  please  v. ~을 기쁘게 하다; ~을 하고 싶어 하다.

Since a king's word is supreme, who can say to him, "What are you doing?"

 - 왕의 말은 최고이기 때문에, 누가 그에게 말할 수 있겠는가, “당신께선 무엇을 하고 계십니까?” 라고.

  supreme [səpríːm] a. 최고의, 최상의.

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.

 - 그의 명령에 복종하는 누구든지 어떤 해도 입지 않을 것이다, 그리고 현명한 마음은 적당한 때와 순서를 알 것이다.

  come to harm : 해를 입게 되다.

  proper [prɑ́pər] a. 적당한.         procedure [prəsíːdʒər] n. 순서, 절차.

For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a man's misery weighs heavily upon him.

 - 모든 일에는 적당한 때와 순서가 있기 때문이다, 비록 사람의 불행이 그의 위에서 무겁게 나갈 지라도.

  misery  n. 불행.                 

  weigh [wei] v. ~의 무게를 달다; 무게가 나가다.

  heavily [hévili]  ad. 무겁게.

Since no man knows the future, who can tell him what is to come?

 - 아무도 미래를 알지 못하기 때문에, 누가 그에게 무슨 일이 일어날지 말할 수 있겠는가?

No man has power over the wind to contain it ; so no one has power over the day of his death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

 - 아무도 바람을 능가하여 그것을 담아낼 힘이 없다 ; 그렇게 아무도 자기 죽음의 날을 능가할 힘이 없다. 아무도 전쟁 중인 시간에 면제되지 않는다, 그렇게 사악함은 그것을 실행하는 사람들을 풀어주지 않을 것이다.

  over  prep. ~을 능가하여, 이기는.

  contain  v. ~을 담다.

  discharge  v. (책임, 의무) 면제하다.

  release  v. 풀어주다, 놓아주다.

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

 - 이 모든 것을 내가 보았다, 태양 아래 행해진 모든 것을 내 마음속에 적용하듯이. 사람이 다른 이들에 군림하여 자기 자신의 해를 입는 때가 있다.

  apply A to B : A를 B에 적용하다.

  lord it over~ : ~에 군림하다.

Then too, I saw the wicked buried--those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

 - 나는 악한 사람들이 매장되는 것을 보았다 -- 그들은 성소로부터 오고 가곤 했으며 그들이 이 일을 행한 도시에서 찬양을 받았었다. 이것 역시 허무하구나.

  bury  v. (무덤에) 묻다, 매장하다.

  used to : ~하고 하다.

  holy place : 성소, 성스런 장소.

  receive  v. 받다.                        praise  n. 칭찬, 찬양.

When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong.

 - 범죄에 대한 판결이 빨리 수행되지 않을 때, 사람들의 마음은 잘못을 행하려는 계획들로 가득 찬다.

  sentence  n. 문장, (법률) 판결.

  crime  n. 범죄.                     carry out : 수행하다.

  be filled with : ~로 가득 차다.

  scheme  n. 계획; 음모.

Although a wicked man commits a hundred crimes and still lives a long time, I know / that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God.

 - 비록 사악한 사람이 백번의 죄를 저지르고 여전히 오래 살 지라도, 나는 안다 / 하나님을 경외하는 사람들이 잘 될 것이라는 것을, 하나님 앞에서 경건한 (사람들이).

  it will go better with~ : ~은 잘 될 것이다.

  reverent [rév-ərənt]  a. 경견한, 공손한.

Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.

 - 그러나 사악한 사람들은 하나님을 경외하지 않기 때문에, 그들은 잘 되지 않을 것이다, 그리고 그들의 나날들은 그림자 같이 길어지지 않을 것이다.

  lengthen [léŋɵ-ən] v. 길어지게 하다, 길게 하다.

There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

 - 땅위에 일어나는 그밖에 허무한 것이 있으니 : 정직한 사람들이 사악한 사람들이 받아 마땅한 것을 받고, 사악한 사람들이 정직한 사람들이 받아 마땅한 것을 받는 것이다. 이것 역시, 내가 말하기에, 허무하다.

  deserve  v. ~받아 마땅하다.

So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun / than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work / all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.

Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man's face and changes its hard appearance. Obey the king's command, I say, because you took an oath before God. Do not be in a hurry to leave the king's presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. Since a king's word is supreme, who can say to him, "What are you doing?" Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.

For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a man's misery weighs heavily upon him. Since no man knows the future, who can tell him what is to come? No man has power over the wind to contain it ; so no one has power over the day of his death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it. All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt. Then too, I saw the wicked buried--those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong. Although a wicked man commits a hundred crimes and still lives a long time, I know that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God. Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow. There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God has given him under the sun.

사람들은 왜 서슴지 않고 죄를 짓는가? 악한 일을 하는데도 바로 벌이 내리지 않기 때문이다. 악한 사람이 백 번 죄를 지어도 그는 여전히 살아 있다. 사람들은 말한다. 하나님 앞에 경건하게 살면서 하나님을 두려워하는 사람은 모든 일이 다 잘 되지만 악한 자는 하나님을 두려워하지 않으니, 그가 하는 일이 잘 될 리 없으며, 사는 날이 그림자 같고 한창 나이에 죽고 말 것이라고 한다. 이 세상에서 헛된 일이 벌어지고 있다. 악한 사람이 받아야 할 벌을 의인이 받는가 하면, 의인이 받아야 할 보상을 악인이 받는다. 이것을 보고, 나 어찌 헛되다고 말하지 않을 수 있겠는가? 나는 생을 즐기라고 권하고 싶다. 사람에게, 먹고 마시고 즐기는 것보다 더 좋은 것이 세상에 없기 때문이다. 그래야 이 세상에서 일하면서, 하나님께 허락받은 한평생을 사는 동안에, 언제나 기쁨이 사람과 함께 있을 것이다.

내가 마음을 다하여 지혜가 무엇인지를 알고자 하였을 때에, 그리고 땅 위에서 밤낮 쉬지도 않고 수고하는 사람의 수고를 살펴보았을 때에, 하나님이 하시는 모든 일을 두고서, 나는 깨달은 바가 있다. 그것은 아무도 이 세상에서 이루어지는 일을 이해할 수는 없다는 것이다. 그 뜻을 찾아보려고 아무리 애를 써도, 사람은 그 뜻을 찾지 못한다. 혹 지혜 있는 사람이 안다고 주장할지도 모르지만, 그 사람도 정말 그 뜻을 알 수는 없는 것이다.

God answers our prayers. But we don't quite trust the answer.

When we do things like that, God must think we are really strange. And we are!
