The Coming into Being of Worlds   四, 世界形相 세계의 형상을 밝히다   (1) 十種形相 세계에 열 가지 모양이 있다   爾時에 普賢菩薩이 復告大衆言하사대 諸佛子야 世界海에 有種種差別形相하니 그때 보현보살이 다시 대중들에게 말씀하셨다. "모든 불자들이여, 세계바다에 갖가지의 차별 형상이 있으니   At that time, Universal Worthy Bodhisattva further told the great assembly, “Disciples of the Buddha! The seas of worlds all have many different appearances and characteristics. <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   At that time: 그때 Universal Worthy Bodhisattva: 보현보살 further told : 다시 말씀하셨다 the great assembly: 대중들에게 “Disciples of the Buddha!: 모든 불자들이여 The seas of worlds : 세계바다 many different appearances and characteristics: 갖가지의 차별 형상이   Then the enlightening being Universally Good said further to the great congregation, "Children of Buddha, the oceans of worlds have various different forms and characteristics. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   所謂或圓或方이며 或非圓方이라 無量差別이며 或如水漩形이며 或如山焰形이며 或如樹形이며 或如華形이며 或如宮殿形이며 或如衆生形이며 或如佛形이라 如是等이 有世界海微塵數하니라 이른바 혹 원형이며 혹은 모가 났으며 혹은 둥글지도 모나지도 아니하여 한량없이 차별하며 혹은 물의 소용돌이 모양 같으며 혹은 산의 불꽃 모양 같으며 혹은 나무 모양 같으며 혹은 꽃 모양 같으며 혹은 궁전 모양 같으며 혹은 중생의 모양 같으며 혹은 부처님 모양 같아서 이와 같은 것이 세계바다 미진수가 있느니라."   They may be round or square, or neither round nor square. There are limitless variations. They may be shaped like a whirlpool, like the soaring flames of a volcano, like trees or flowers, like a palace or a being, or perhaps like a Buddha. Such variations are as numerous as the motes of dust in a sea of worlds.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>     They may be : 이른바  round or square: 원형이며 혹은 모가 났으며 neither round nor square: 혹은 둥글지도 모나지도 아니하여 There are limitless variations: 한량없이 차별하며  They may be shaped like: 모양 같으며 a whirlpool: 물의 소용돌이 the soaring flames of a volcano: 산의 불꽃 모양 trees : 나무, flowers:꽃 , a palace : 궁전, a being: 중생 such variations : 이와 같은 것 as numerous as the motes of dust : 미진수   That is to say, some are round, some square, some neither round nor square. There are infinite distinctions. Some are shaped like whirlpools, some like mountains of flames, some like trees, some like flowers, some like palaces, some like living creatures, some like Buddhas. There are as many forms such as these as there are atoms in an ocean of worlds." < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   (2) 重頌 그 뜻을 게송으로 거듭 펴다   爾時에 普賢菩薩이 欲重宣其義하사 承佛威力하사 觀察十方하고 而說頌言하사대 그때 보현보살이 그 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 부처님의 위신력을 받들어 시방을 관찰하고 게송으로 설하였다.   Then Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, wishing to restate these principles, received the awesome spiritual power of the Buddhas, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke verses.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.> Then: 그때 Universal Worthy Bodhisattva: 보현보살 wishing to restate these principles: 그 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 received : 받들어 the awesome spiritual power of the Buddhas: 부처님의 위신력 contemplated the ten directions: 시방을 관찰하고 and spoke verses: 게송으로 설하였다     Then, to review this point, Universally Good, imbued with the power of the Buddha, looked over the ten directions and said,< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     諸國土海種種別하야 種種莊嚴種種住호대 殊形共美徧十方하니 汝等咸應共觀察이어다 모든 국토바다가 갖가지로 달라서 갖가지로 장엄하고 갖가지로 머물되 훌륭한 모양 모두 아름다워 시방에 두루니 그대들은 다 함께 관찰할 지어다   All of you should contemplate The variations in the seas of lands: Their myriad adornments and environments, Their distinct, beautiful forms in the ten directions.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   All of you : 그대들은 다 함께 should contemplate: 관찰할 지어다 The variations : 갖가지로 달라서  in the seas of lands: 모든 국토바다 Their myriad adornments and environments: 갖가지로 장엄하고 갖가지로 머물되 Their distinct, beautiful forms : 훌륭한 모양 모두 아름다워  in the ten directions: 시방에 두루니   The oceans of lands are variously different: Various adornments, various supports; Different forms, all beautiful, pervade the ten directions: You should together all observe them.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   其狀或圓或有方하며或復三維及八隅며 摩尼輪狀蓮華等이라一切皆由業令異로다 그 모양 둥글고 혹은 모났으며 혹은 다시 세모나고 팔모 났으며 마니바퀴 모양과 연꽃 모양들이라 모두가 다 업 때문에 다르도다   They may be round or square, Triangular or octagonal, Or shaped like lotuses or wheels of mani. Karma produces these distinct forms.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   round or square: 둥글고 혹은 모났으며 Triangular or octagonal: 세모나고 팔모 났으며 shaped like lotuses : 연꽃 모양들 wheels of mani: 마니바퀴 모양 Karma produces: 업 때문에 다르도다  these distinct forms: 모두가 다   Some are round, some are square, Some triangular, some octagonal; Gemstone-wheel shaped, lotus blossoms, and so on: All are different, according to deeds.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或有淸淨焰莊嚴호대眞金間錯多殊好하며 門闥競開無壅滯하니斯由業廣意無雜이로다 혹 어떤 것은 청정한 불꽃장엄이며 진금(眞金)으로 사이마다 아름답게 하였고 문들을 모두 열어 막힘없으니 업이 넓고 뜻이 잡되지 않기 때문일세   Perhaps their adornments are blazing and pure, Interlaced with pure gold of the finest quality. Doors large and small are thrown wide open. All this results from the vast karma of unmixed intention.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   adornments are blazing and pure: 청정한 불꽃장엄 Interlaced with: 사이마다 ~하였고 pure gold of the finest quality: 진금(眞金)으로 아름답게 are thrown wide open: 모두 열어 막힘없으니  All this results from : 때문일세 the vast karma : 업이 넓고 of unmixed intention: 뜻이 잡되지 않은     Some have arrays of pure flames, Mixed with gold, most rarely fine, All doors open, with no resistance: This is from deeds broadminded and pure.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     刹海無邊差別藏이 譬如雲布在虛空하야 寶輪布地妙莊嚴이어든 諸佛光明照耀中이로다 세계바다 끝없이 차별함이 마치 구름이 허공에 펼쳐진 것 같아서 보배바퀴 땅에 펴진 묘한 장엄을 모든 부처님 광이 그 속을 밝게 비치네   The boundless sea of ksetras, with myriad differentiations, Resembles a bank of clouds drifting in space. Jeweled wheels cover their ground in wondrous adornment Under the dazzling light of the Buddhas' radiance. <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>     The boundless sea of ksetras: 세계바다 with myriad differentiations: 끝없이 차별함 Resembles: 마치~같아서 a bank of clouds drifting : 구름이 펼쳐진 것  in space: 허공에 Jeweled wheels : 보배바퀴  cover their ground in: 땅에 펴진 wondrous adornment: 묘한 장엄 Under the dazzling light : 그 속을 밝게 비치네  the Buddhas' radiance: 부처님 광     The store of boundless difference of the oceans of worlds Is like clouds draped in the sky, Jewel discs spread on the ground in wonderful arrays, The lights of the Buddhas shining therein. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   一切國土心分別을 種種光明而照現이어든 佛於如是刹海中에 各各示現神通力이로다 온갖 국토를 마음으로 분별하고 갖가지 광명으로 비추어 나타내는데 부처님이 이와 같은 세계바다 가운데에 각각 신통력을 나타내보이시네   Mere discriminations of the mind, All lands appear in shining light. Manifesting within the seas of ksetras, Each and every Buddha displays his spiritual powers.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>     Mere discriminations of the mind: 마음으로 분별하고 All lands: 온갖 국토 appear: 비추어 나타내는데 in shining light: 갖가지 광명으로 Manifesting : 나타내  within the seas of ksetras: 이와 같은 세계바다 가운데에 Each and every Buddha : 각각  displays : 보이시네 his spiritual powers: 신통력   All lands, distinctions of mind, Appear reflected in various lights; In these oceans of worlds Buddhas each manifest mystical powers.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或有雜染或淸淨하야 受苦受樂各差別이여 斯由業海不思議니 諸流轉法恒如是로다 혹은 잡되고 혹은 청정해서 고(苦)와 낙(樂)을 받음이 각각 차별함이여 이는 업의 바다가 부사의하기 때문이니 모든 유전(流轉)하는 법이 늘 이와 같네   Some lands are defiled, others pure. The joy and misery of each being Differs because of the inconceivable sea of karma. The cyclic flow of dharmas is eternally thus.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   defiled: 잡되고  pure: 청정해 The joy and misery : 고(苦)와 낙(樂)을 받음 each being: 각각 차별함 Differs: 차별함 because of : 때문이니  the inconceivable sea of karma.: 업의 바다가 부사의하기 The cyclic flow of dharmas : 모든 유전(流轉)하는 법  eternally thus: 늘 이와 같네   Some lands are dirty, some are pure; Pleasant or painful, each is different. This comes from the inconceivable ocean of acts: Cyclic phenomena are always like this.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     一毛孔內難思刹이 等微塵數種種住어든 一一皆有徧照尊이 在衆會中宣妙法이로다 한 털구멍 안에 생각할 수 없는 세계가 작은 티끌수와 같이 갖가지로 머무는데 낱낱에 다 변조존(遍照尊)이 계시어 회중(會衆) 가운데서 미묘한 법을 펴시네   A single pore contains inconceivable lands As numerous as motes of dust, in diverse environments. Each land has an All-Shining Honored One Proclaiming wondrous Dharma for the assembled multitudes.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   A single pore : 한 털구멍 안에 contains : 머무는데 inconceivable lands: 생각할 수 없는 세계 As numerous as motes of dust: 작은 티끌수와 같이 in diverse environments.: 갖가지로 Each land : 낱낱 an All-Shining Honored On: 변조존(遍照尊) Proclaiming wondrous Dharma for : 미묘한 법을 펴시네 the assembled multitudes: 회중(會衆) 가운데서     Inside a single hair pore, inconceivable lands With various bases, many as atoms: In each of them a universal illuminator Expounds the truth in the midst of the crowd. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   於一塵中大小刹이 種種差別如塵數하야 平坦高下各不同이어든 佛悉往詣轉法輪이로다 한 티끌 속에 크고 작은 세계가 갖가지로 차별함이 티끌수와 같고 평탄하고 높고 낮음이 각각 다른데 부처님이 모두 가서 법륜을 굴리시네   A single dust mote includes lands great and small, Their variations as multitudinous as motes of dust. Whether level, high, or low, each terrain is unique. The Buddhas travel to them all to turn the Dharma wheel.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   A single dust mote: 한 티끌 속에  lands great and small,: 크고 작은 세계 Their variations : 갖가지로 차별함이  as multitudinous as motes of dust: 티끌수와 같고 Whether level, high, or low: 평탄하고 높고 낮음 each terrain is unique: 각각 다른데 The Buddhas: 부처님 travel : 가서  them all: 모두  turn the Dharma wheel: 법륜을 굴리시네   In a single atom, great and small lands, Variously different, as numerous as atoms; Level, high and low, each is different; Buddha goes to all to operate the teaching.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     一切塵中所現刹이 皆是本願神通力이라 隨其心樂種種殊하야 於虛空中悉能作이로다 모든 티끌 속에 나타난 세계가 다본래의 서원과 신통력이라 그 마음에 즐김을 따라 갖가지 다르며 허공 가운데다 다 능히 만들었네   Ksetras appear in every mote of dust By the power of spiritual penetrations and past vows. Fulfilling the different wishes of sentient beings, The Buddhas can accomplish anything within the void.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   Ksetras : 세계 appear : 나타난  in every mote of dust: 모든 티끌 속에 the power of spiritual penetrations : 신통력 past vows: 본래의 서원 Fulfilling the different : 갖가지 다르며 wishes of sentient beings: 마음에 즐김 The Buddhas can accomplish anything: 다 능히 만들었네 within the void: 허공 가운데다   The lands manifested in a single atom Are all the occult power of the original vow: According to the various differences in inclination of mind All can be made, in the midst of space. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     一切國土所有塵이여 一一塵中佛皆入하사 普爲衆生起神變하시니 毘盧遮那法如是로다 온갖 국토에 있는 티끌들이여 낱낱 티끌 속에 부처님이 다 들어가사 널리 중생 위해 신통변화 일으키니 비로자나의 법이 이와 같도다   Consider all the dust motes in every land: The Buddhas enter each and every one. For all beings, they perform spiritual transformations. The Dharma of Vairocana Buddha is thus.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   Consider all the dust motes: 티끌들이여 in every land: 온갖 국토에 있는 The Buddhas enter: 부처님이 다 들어가사 each and every one: 낱낱 티끌 속에 For all beings: 널리 중생 위해 they perform : 일으키니 spiritual transformations: 신통변화 The Dharma of Vairocana Buddha: 비로자나의 법 is thus: 이와 같도다   In all atoms of all lands Buddha enters, each and every one, Producing miracle displays for sentient beings: Such is the way of Vairocana.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>           五, 世界體性 세계의 체성(體性)을 밝히다   (1) 二十種體性 세계에는 스무 가지의 체성이 있다   爾時에 普賢菩薩이 復告大衆言하사대 諸佛子야 應知世界海에 有種種體니 그때 보현보살이 다시 대중들에게 말하였다. 모든 불자들이여, 응당히 알아라. 세계바다에는 갖가지의 체성이 있으니   At that time, Universal Worthy Bodhisattva further told the great assembly, “Disciples of the Buddha, you should know that the seas of worlds are composed of various substances. <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   At that time: 그때 Universal Worthy Bodhisattva : 보현보살 further told : 다시 말하였다 the great assembly: 대중들에게 Disciples of the Buddha: 모든 불자들이여 you should know that : 응당히 알아라 the seas of worlds: 세계바다 are composed of : 있으니  various substances: 갖가지의 체성   Then the enlightening being Universally Good also said to the great assembly, "Children of Buddha, know that the ocean of worlds have various substances. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   所謂或以一切寶莊嚴爲體며 或以一寶種種莊嚴爲體며 或以一切寶光明爲體며 或以種種色光明爲體며 이른바 혹 온갖 보배장엄으로써 체성이 되었으며, 혹은 한 가지 보배 갖가지 장엄으로써 체성이 되었으며, 혹은 온갖 보배광명으로써 체성이 되었으며, 혹은 갖가지 색의 광명으로써 체성이 되었으며,   That is, they may be composed of the adornments of myriad jewels, or of various adornments of a single type of jewel. They may be composed of the reflections of jewels, of a display of myriad ornaments, <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   various kinds of incense: 갖가지 향  a crown of jeweled flowers: 온갖 보배꽃관(冠) the reflections of jewels: 온갖 보배의 그림자 a display of myriad ornaments: 온갖 장엄을 나타내 보이는 것   some are of various fragrances, some are made of crowns of precious flowers, some are of all jewel reflections, some are made of what is manifested by all adornments, < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>   或以一念心普示現境界爲體며 或以菩薩形寶爲體며 或以寶華蘂爲體며 或以佛言音爲體니라 혹은 한생각에 널리 나타내 보이는 경계로써 체성을 삼았으며, 혹은 보살 형상의 보배로써 체성이 되었으며, 혹은 보배 꽃술로써 체성이 되었으며, 혹은 부처님의 음성으로써 체성이 되었느니라."   of a state pervasively manifested by a single thought, of jewels in the form of Bodhisattvas, of jeweled flower stamens, or of the sound of a Buddha's voice.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   a state pervasively manifested : 널리 나타내 보이는 경계  by a single thought: 한생각에 jewels in the form of Bodhisattvas: 보살 형상의 보배 jeweled flower stamens: 보배 꽃술 the sound of a Buddha's voice: 부처님의 음성   some are made of an instant of mind manifesting the whole cosmos, some are made of jewels in the forms of enlightening beings, some are made of jewel flower pistils, some are made of the spoken sounds of the Buddhas.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     (2) 重頌 그 뜻을 게송으로 거듭 펴다   爾時에 普賢菩薩이 欲重宣其義하사 承佛威力하사 觀察十方하고 而說頌言하사대 그때 보현보살이 그 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 부처님의 위신력을 받들어 시방을 관찰하고 게송으로 설하였다.   Then Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, wishing to restate his meaning, received the Buddhas' awesome spiritual power, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke verses.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   Then: 그때 Universal Worthy Bodhisattva: 보현보살 wishing to restate his meaning: 그 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 received: 받들어 the Buddhas' awesome spiritual powe: 부처님의 위신력 contemplated the ten directions: 시방을 관찰하고  spoke verses: 게송으로 설하였다.   Then, to repeat this, Universally Good surveyed the ten directions by the Buddha's power and said,< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或有諸刹海는 妙寶所合成이며 堅固不可壞니 安住寶蓮華로다 혹 어떤 여러 세계바다는 묘한 보배가 합해서 이루어졌으며 견고해서 깨뜨릴 수 없으니 보배연꽃에 안주 하였네   Perhaps there are seas of worlds Composed of clusters of wondrous gems, Solid, adamant, and indestructible, Peacefully dwelling on jeweled lotus flowers.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   Perhaps: 혹  seas of worlds: 여러 세계바다 Composed of: 이루어졌으며 clusters of: 합해서  wondrous gems: 묘한 보배 Solid, adamant, and indestructible: 견고해서 깨뜨릴 수 없으니 Peacefully dwelling on: 안주 하였네 jeweled lotus flowers: 보배연꽃   There are some oceans of worlds Compounded of jewels, Solid and unbreakable, Resting on precious lotus blossoms. < Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或是淨光明은 出生不可知며 一切光莊嚴은 依止虛空住로다 혹 어떤 청정한 광명은 출생한 데를 알지 못하며 온갖 광명장엄 허공에 의지해서 머무네   Perhaps there is pure brightness From which emerge unknowable Myriad adorning lights Shining in empty space.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   pure brightness: 청정한 광명은  From which emerge : 출생한 데 unknowable: 알지 못하며 Myriad adorning lights: 온갖 광명장엄 Shining in empty space: 허공에 의지해서 머무네   Some are pure light beams Of unknowable origin; These arrays of all light beams Rest in empty space.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或淨光爲體하야 復依光明住호대 光雲作嚴飾하니 菩薩共遊處로다 혹은 청정한 광명이 체성이 되어 다시 광명을 의지해서 머물되 광명구름이 장엄이 되어 보살들이 함께 그 곳에 노니네   Some lands are composed of pure radiance And exist within bright light. Luminous clouds embellish those lands, As Bodhisattvas wander in their midst. <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>   are composed of : 체성이 되어 pure radiance: 청정한 광명 And exist within: 의지해서 머물되 bright light: 광명 Luminous clouds : 광명구름 embellish those lands: 장엄이 되어 Bodhisattvas: 보살들 wander: 노니네  in their midst: 함께 그 곳에   Some are made of pure light And also rest in light rays Embellished with clouds of light Where enlightening beings roam.< Translated into English by Thomas Cleary>     或有諸刹海는 從於願力生이라 猶如影像住하니 取說不可得이로다 혹 어떤 여러 세계바다는 원력으로부터 남[生]이라 마치 그림자처럼 머무니 취할 수도 말할 수도 없네   There may be seas of ksetras Born from the power of vows.
