Book 4. The Coming into Being of Worlds
四, 世界形相 세계의 형상을 밝히다
(1) 十種形相 세계에 열 가지 모양이 있다
爾時에 普賢菩薩이 復告大衆言하사대
諸佛子야 世界海에 有種種差別形相하니
그때 보현보살이 다시 대중들에게 말씀하셨다.
"모든 불자들이여, 세계바다에 갖가지의 차별 형상이 있으니
At that time, Universal Worthy Bodhisattva further told the great assembly,
“Disciples of the Buddha! The seas of worlds all have many different appearances and characteristics. <Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>
At that time: 그때 Universal Worthy Bodhisattva: 보현보살
further told : 다시 말씀하셨다 the great assembly: 대중들에게
“Disciples of the Buddha!: 모든 불자들이여 The seas of worlds : 세계바다
many different appearances and characteristics: 갖가지의 차별 형상이
Then the enlightening being Universally Good said further to the great congregation, "Children of Buddha, the oceans of worlds have various different forms and characteristics.

所謂或圓或方이며 或非圓方이라 無量差別이며
或如水漩形이며 或如山焰形이며 或如樹形이며
或如華形이며 或如宮殿形이며 或如衆生形이며
或如佛形이라 如是等이 有世界海微塵數하니라
이른바 혹 원형이며 혹은 모가 났으며
혹은 둥글지도 모나지도 아니하여 한량없이 차별하며
혹은 물의 소용돌이 모양 같으며 혹은 산의 불꽃 모양 같으며 혹은 나무 모양 같으며
혹은 꽃 모양 같으며 혹은 궁전 모양 같으며
혹은 중생의 모양 같으며 혹은 부처님 모양 같아서
이와 같은 것이 세계바다 미진수가 있느니라."
They may be round or square, or neither round nor square. There are limitless variations. They may be shaped like a whirlpool, like the soaring flames of a volcano, like trees or flowers, like a palace or a being, or perhaps like a Buddha. Such variations are as numerous as the motes of dust in a sea of worlds.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>
They may be : 이른바 round or square: 원형이며 혹은 모가 났으며
neither round nor square: 혹은 둥글지도 모나지도 아니하여
There are limitless variations: 한량없이 차별하며 They may be shaped like: 모양 같으며

trees : 나무, flowers:꽃 , a palace : 궁전, a being: 중생 such variations : 이와 같은 것
as numerous as the motes of dust : 미진수
That is to say, some are round, some square, some neither round nor square. There are infinite distinctions. Some are shaped like whirlpools, some like mountains of flames, some like trees, some like flowers, some like palaces, some like living creatures, some like Buddhas. (2) 重頌 그 뜻을 게송으로 거듭 펴다
爾時에 普賢菩薩이 欲重宣其義하사
承佛威力하사 觀察十方하고 而說頌言하사대
그때 보현보살이 그 뜻을 거듭 펴려고
부처님의 위신력을 받들어 시방을 관찰하고 게송으로 설하였다.
Then Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, wishing to restate these principles, received the awesome spiritual power of the Buddhas, contemplated the ten directions, and spoke verses.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>

諸國土海種種別하야 種種莊嚴種種住호대
殊形共美徧十方하니 汝等咸應共觀察이어다
모든 국토바다가 갖가지로 달라서
갖가지로 장엄하고 갖가지로 머물되

그대들은 다 함께 관찰할 지어다
All of you should contemplate
The variations in the seas of lands:
Their myriad adornments and environments,

The oceans of lands are variously different:
Various adornments, various supports;
Different forms, all beautiful, pervade the ten directions:

其狀或圓或有方하며或復三維及八隅며
摩尼輪狀蓮華等이라一切皆由業令異로다
그 모양 둥글고 혹은 모났으며
혹은 다시 세모나고 팔모 났으며
마니바퀴 모양과 연꽃 모양들이라
모두가 다 업 때문에 다르도다
They may be round or square,
Triangular or octagonal,
Or shaped like lotuses or wheels of mani.

或有淸淨焰莊嚴호대眞金間錯多殊好하며
門闥競開無壅滯하니斯由業廣意無雜이로다
혹 어떤 것은 청정한 불꽃장엄이며
진금(眞金)으로 사이마다 아름답게 하였고
문들을 모두 열어 막힘없으니
업이 넓고 뜻이 잡되지 않기 때문일세
Perhaps their adornments are blazing and pure,
Interlaced with pure gold of the finest quality.
Doors large and small are thrown wide open.

刹海無邊差別藏이 譬如雲布在虛空하야
寶輪布地妙莊嚴이어든 諸佛光明照耀中이로다
세계바다 끝없이 차별함이

모든 부처님 광이 그 속을 밝게 비치네
The boundless sea of ksetras, with myriad differentiations,
Resembles a bank of clouds drifting in space.
Jeweled wheels cover their ground in wondrous adornment
Under the dazzling light of the Buddhas' radiance.

一切國土心分別을 種種光明而照現이어든
佛於如是刹海中에 各各示現神通力이로다

Mere discriminations of the mind,
All lands appear in shining light.
Manifesting within the seas of ksetras,

In these oceans of worlds

或有雜染或淸淨하야 受苦受樂各差別이여
斯由業海不思議니 諸流轉法恒如是로다
혹은 잡되고 혹은 청정해서
고(苦)와 낙(樂)을 받음이 각각 차별함이여
이는 업의 바다가 부사의하기 때문이니
모든 유전(流轉)하는 법이 늘 이와 같네
Some lands are defiled, others pure.
The joy and misery of each being
Differs because of the inconceivable sea of karma.

Some lands are dirty, some are pure;
Pleasant or painful, each is different.

一毛孔內難思刹이 等微塵數種種住어든
一一皆有徧照尊이 在衆會中宣妙法이로다
한 털구멍 안에 생각할 수 없는 세계가

회중(會衆) 가운데서 미묘한 법을 펴시네
A single pore contains inconceivable lands
As numerous as motes of dust, in diverse environments.
Each land has an All-Shining Honored One

Inside a single hair pore, inconceivable lands

In each of them a universal illuminator
Expounds the truth in the midst of the crowd.

A single dust mote includes lands great and small,
Their variations as multitudinous as motes of dust.
Whether level, high, or low, each terrain is unique.

In a single atom, great and small lands,
Variously different, as numerous as atoms;
Level, high and low, each is different;

一切塵中所現刹이 皆是本願神通力이라
隨其心樂種種殊하야 於虛空中悉能作이로다
모든 티끌 속에 나타난 세계가
다본래의 서원과 신통력이라

허공 가운데다 다 능히 만들었네
Ksetras appear in every mote of dust
By the power of spiritual penetrations and past vows.
Fulfilling the different wishes of sentient beings,

the power of spiritual penetrations : 신통력 past vows: 본래의 서원

The lands manifested in a single atom
Are all the occult power of the original vow:
According to the various differences in inclination of mind

一切國土所有塵이여 一一塵中佛皆入하사
普爲衆生起神變하시니 毘盧遮那法如是로다
온갖 국토에 있는 티끌들이여
낱낱 티끌 속에 부처님이 다 들어가사

비로자나의 법이 이와 같도다
Consider all the dust motes in every land:
The Buddhas enter each and every one.
For all beings, they perform spiritual transformations.

The Dharma of Vairocana Buddha: 비로자나의 법 is thus: 이와 같도다
In all atoms of all lands
Buddha enters, each and every one,
Producing miracle displays for sentient beings:

五, 世界體性 세계의 체성(體性)을 밝히다
(1) 二十種體性 세계에는 스무 가지의 체성이 있다
爾時에 普賢菩薩이 復告大衆言하사대
諸佛子야 應知世界海에 有種種體니
그때 보현보살이 다시 대중들에게 말하였다.
모든 불자들이여, 응당히 알아라. 세계바다에는 갖가지의 체성이 있으니
At that time, Universal Worthy Bodhisattva further told the great assembly, “Disciples of the Buddha, you should know that the seas of worlds are composed of various substances.

the great assembly: 대중들에게 Disciples of the Buddha: 모든 불자들이여
you should know that : 응당히 알아라

Then the enlightening being Universally Good also said to the great assembly, "Children of Buddha, know that the ocean of worlds have various substances.

묘한 보배가 합해서 이루어졌으며
견고해서 깨뜨릴 수 없으니

Perhaps there are seas of worlds
Composed of clusters of wondrous gems,
Solid, adamant, and indestructible,
Peacefully dwelling on jeweled lotus flowers.<Translated into English by B.T.T.S.>

一切光莊嚴은 依止虛空住로다
혹 어떤 청정한 광명은
출생한 데를 알지 못하며
온갖 광명장엄
허공에 의지해서 머무네
Perhaps there is pure brightness
From which emerge unknowable
Myriad adorning lights

Some lands are composed of pure radiance
And exist within bright light.
Luminous clouds embellish those lands,

There may be seas of ksetras
Born from the power of vows.
Like reflections they abide,

珠輪以嚴地하니 菩薩悉充滿이로다
혹은 마니로 이루어져서
널리 햇빛광명을 놓으며
진주바퀴로 땅을 장엄하였으니

Some may be fashioned from mani,
Everywhere shining like the sun.
