파이어 볼스(The Fireballs)는 처음에는 리드 기타리스트인 조지 톰스코(Geeorge Tomsco)를 주축으로 한 연주 그룹으로 출발하여 1959년 "Torquay" , 1960년에  "Bulldog" 으로 빌보드 탑 40에 진입하기도 했으나 19060년대 초에 드럼과 리듬기타 멤버가 교체되면서 '지미 길머'가 보컬리스트로 참여하게 된다. 1963년에 발표한 Sugar Shack은 그 해 10월 12일 부터 11월 9일 까지 연속 5주간 빌보드 핫 100차트 1위에 오르고 1963년 최고의 노래로 골드 레코드를 수상했다.

에스프레쏘 커피가 맛있는 철도 위 언덕에 있는 작은 통나무 커피샵을 사람들은 슈거섁이라고 부른다. 내가 뻔질나게 그 곳에 드나 들면서 커피를 줄창 마시는 것은 커피 때문이 아니고 그 집의 예쁜 아가씨 때문이다. 그 아가씨 이제 나와 결혼한다. 그리고 둘이 마주 앉아 슈거 섁의 추억을 그리며 언젠가 둘이 함께 슈거 섁으로 가고파-하는 내용이다.

인기의 여세를 몰아 1964년 Sugar Shack과 비슷한 사운드의 곡 "Daisy Petal Pickin'이 차트 15위에 머물기도 했지만 이 시기에 영국의 비틀즈의 열풍이 불어 닥쳐 더 이상의 큰 성공은 거두지 못했다. 비틀즈로 시작된 영국 음악의 침공(British Invasion)에 직접적인 피해를 본 미국 음악인 중 하나로 볼 수 있다.
