1966년 1월 1일자로 빌보드 핫100 차트 1위에 오른 곡이다. 1964년 2월에 이 곡을 완성하고 가펑클을 찾아가 통기타로 녹음하여 1964년 3월에 발표했으나 큰 주목을 받지 못했다.  

사이먼은 1965년 솔로로 이 곡을 두번째로 녹음하기도 했지만 역시 반응은 없었다. 1965년 6월 15일, 콜롬비아 레코드사의 프로듀서 톰 윌슨은 밥 딜런의 Like a Rolling Stone의 세션 레코딩 작업후에 곧 바로 통기타로 녹음된 이 곡에 전기 기타, 베이스와 드럼을 넣어 다시 더빙하고 세상에 내 놓았는데 이 것이 주효하여 차트 1위에 오르고 사이먼과 가펑클은 듀엣으로 본격적으로 활동하면서 주옥같은 히트곡을 발표하게 된다.

전통적인 포크송에 전기기타 사운드를 가미한 포크록은 밥 딜런이 처음으로 시도했지만 이 곡의 성공은 사이먼과 가펑클과도 상의않은 채 전기기타 사운드로  재더빙한 프로듀서 톰 윌슨의 공으로 돌려야 할 것 같다. 1966년 1월 1일자로 1위를 차지한 이 곡은 다음 2주간은 비틀즈의 We Can Work It Out에 1위 자리를 양보하지만 4주째인 1월 22일에는 다시 1위를 탈환하기도 했다.
