Chapter Two: Expedient Means

(7) 석가모니 부처님의 방편과 진실

107.爾時諸梵王괴及諸天帝釋과

護世四天王과及大自在天과

幷餘諸天衆의眷屬百千萬이

恭敬合掌禮하고 請我轉法輪커늘

이 때에 여러 범천왕과 제석천왕들과

이 세상을 보호하는 사천왕과 대자재천왕과

여러 천신 대중들과 그들의 권속 백 천 만 대중들이

공경히 합장하고 예배하면서 나에게 법륜을 굴리기를 청하거늘

At that time the Brahma kings,

along with the heavenly king Shakra,

the Four Heavenly Kings who guard the world,

and the heavenly king Great Freedom,

in company with other heavenly beings

and their hundreds and thousands

of followers,

reverently pressing their palms together and bowed,

begging me to turn the wheel of the Law. <Translated by Burton Watson>

At that time: 이 때에  the Brahma kings: 여러 범천왕

the heavenly king Shakra: 제석천왕들

the Four Heavenly Kings : 사천왕 who guard the world: 이 세상을 보호하는

the heavenly king Great Freedom: 대자재천왕  other heavenly beings: 여러 천신 대중들

hundreds and thousands: 백 천 만 대중들 of followers: 권속

reverently pressing their palms together: 공경히 합장하고 bowed: 예배하면서

begging me: 나에게 청하거늘 to turn : 굴리기를 the wheel of the Law: 법륜

Just then the Brahma Heaven Kings,

As well as the God Shakra,

The Four World-Protecting God Kings,

The god of the heaven of Great Comfort,

And the other heavenly multitudes,

With retinues numbering in the billions

Reverently placed their palms togehter,

And requested me to turn the Dharma Wheel.

107.爾(に)時(じ)諸(しょ)梵(ぼん)王(のう)괴   　  及(ぎッ)諸(しょ)天(てん)帝(たい)釋(しゃく)과

護(ご)世(せ)四(し)天(てん)王(のう)과   　  及(ぎゅう)大(だい)自(じ)在(ざい)天(てん)과

幷(びょう)餘(よ)諸(しょ)天(てん)衆(じゅ)의   　 眷(けん)屬(ぞく)百(ひゃく)千(せん)萬(まん)이

恭(く)敬(ぎょう)合(がッ)掌(しょう)禮(らい)하고　 請(しょう)我(が)轉(てん)法(ぼう)輪(りん)커늘

108.我卽自思惟호대 若但讚佛乘이면

衆生沒在苦하야 不能信是法일새

破法不信故로 墜於三惡道리니

我寧不說法하고 疾入於涅槃이라하다가

尋念過去佛의 所行方便力하고

我今所得道도 亦應說三乘이로다

내가 스스로 생각하기를 ‘만약 일불승만 찬탄하면

괴로움에 빠져 있는 저 중생들은 이 법을 믿을 수 없어서

법을 파괴하고 믿지 않는 까닭에 삼악도(三惡道)에 떨어질 것이니 내가 차라리 설법하는 일을 그만두고 빨리 열반에 들어버릴까’ 하였느니라.

마침내 과거 부처님께서 행하신 방편의 일을 생각하고 내가 지금 얻은

도에 대해서도 삼승을 알맞게 말하리라.’ 하였느니라.

Immediately I thought to myself

that if I merely praised the Buddha vehicle,

then the living beings, sunk in their suffering,

would be incapable of believing in this Law.

And because they rejected the Law and failed to believe it,

they would fall into the three evil paths.

It would be better if I did not preach the Law

but quickly entered into nirvana.

Then my thoughts turned to the Buddhas of the past

and the power of expedient means they had employed,

and I thought that the way I had now attained

should likewise be preached as three vehicles. <Translated by Burton Watson>

Immediately I thought to myself: 스스로 생각하기를

if I merely praised: 만약~만 찬탄하면  the Buddha vehicle: 일불승

the living beings,: 저 중생들 sunk in their suffering: 괴로움에 빠져 있는

would be incapable of believing: 믿을 수 없어서 in this Law: 이 법을

rejected the Law : 법을 파괴하고  failed to believe it: 믿지 않는

would fall into: 떨어질 것이니  the three evil paths: 삼악도(三惡道)에

It would be better : ~하는 것이 좋겠어

if I did not preach the Law: 설법하는 일을 그만두고

quickly entered into: 빨리~들어버리다 nirvana:열반

my thoughts turned to : 생각하고 the Buddhas of the past: 과거 부처님

the power of expedient means they had employed: 방편의 일

the way : 도 I had now attained: 내가 지금 얻은

should likewise be preached : 알맞게 말하리라   three vehicles: 삼승

I then thought to myself,

"Were I to praise only the Buddha Vehicle,

Beings sunk in suffering

Would be unable to believe this Dharma.

They would slander it out of disbelief,

And fall into the three evil paths.

It's better that I do not speak the Dharma,

But quickly enter into Nirvana."

Then I recalled that the Buddhas of the past

Practiced powerful expedients,

And as I now have obtained the Path,

我(が)今(こん)所(しょ)得(とく)道(どう)도    　亦(やく)應(おう)說(せッ)三(さん)乘(じょう)이로다
