수선화의 속명인 나르키수스(Narcissus)는 그리스 신화에 나오는 나르시스(나르키수스)라는 청년의 이름에서 유래한다. 나르시스는 연못 속에 비친 자기 얼굴의 아름다움에 반해서 물속에 빠져 죽었는데, 그곳에서 수선화가 피었다고 한다. 그래서 꽃말은 나르시스라는 미소년의 전설에서 '자기주의(自己主義)' 또는 '자기애(自己愛)'를 뜻하게 되었다.

여섯개로 갈라진 꽃 틈으로 솟은 부화관은 마치 아름다운 왕관을 연상케 한다. 지중해가 원산지며 노란 꽃과 흰 꽃이 핀다.

일곱 송이 수선화, Seven Daffodils는 1957년 결성된 미국 포크그룹 브라더스 포(The Brothers Four)가 1970년 발표한 곡. 스코트랜드 출신 영국의 재즈 가수인 캐롤 키드(Carol Kidd)도 불렀다.

우리나라 가사로 번안하여 양희은, 양하영이 부르기도 했다.
