Mike Smyth has a new approach to the walking robot: he vows to program his MiniMechadon contraption to teach itself to walk. Smith offers lots of details of the construction of the robot that's scarcely larger than a soda can, which he accomplished between November, 2002 and December, 2003. But the specifics of the Star Wars-like AT-ST mini mecha's learning algorithms, which Smyth says will "allow the robot to learn how to walk, rather than programming it to do so," are more sketchy.
If it can learn how to walk, what else can it learn how to do? Don't worry too much yet, though—the video on Smyth's site shows the thing taking decidedly baby steps at best. – Charlie White
