Knicks Still Interested In Carter
New York Post - 05/25 - 6:22 AM EST (AP Photo)
Despite Vince Carter's disappointing postseason, the Knicks still have interest in pursuing the Nets high-flyer if he becomes a free agent July 1, a source close to Isiah Thomas told The Post. The Knicks plan to revisit trade discussions they held with the Nets before the Feb. 23 deadline. "They will do their due diligence with him," the source said of Carter. The Knicks would have to work out a sign-and-trade agreement with the Nets. The Knicks, however, are wary of Carter's reported interest in getting a 3-year, $60 million deal - which they consider a long-term investment on a 30-year-old on the downhill portion of his career. Thomas has stated the Knicks are not looking to use their $5 million mid-level exception on a free agent and aren't interested in adding to the payroll and luxury-tax bill. Before the trade deadline, the Knicks offered the Nets a package of Channing Frye, Malik Rose and Jerome James (the latter two of which own bad contracts for their production) for Carter. The Nets declined, though they like Frye. It is believed they also asked about rookie Renaldo Balkman, who would look great on the fastbreak with Jason Kidd. [READ]

Indianapolis Star - 05/25 - 12:55 PM EST
Former teammate Stephen Jackson reportedly said Jermaine O'Neal wants out, but O'Neal told The Star he has made no such demands. He has said several times, however, the Pacers should trade him if they plan to rebuild. "You never know. I hope so," Bird told NBA Radio when asked whether O'Neal would return. "It's just wait and see what happens. Anytime a guy like Jermaine's involved, you don't just go out and give him away. You have to go out and try to get the best fit you possibly can for your own team. We'll look at everything we can this summer." [READ]

A two-time all-conference selection, the 6-foot-6 Rush averaged a team-high 13.8 points for the Big 12 champions. Sophomore Julian Wright, another starter, has committed to the draft. But with Rush returning, Kansas will have all but one of the 14 players who went 33-5 and captured the Jayhawks' third straight conference title. Rush was projected to be a second round pick by RealGM.com. [READ]

In a news conference to introduce Sam Vincent as coach, Jordan announced Bickerstaff, the team's coach and GM since its inception three years ago, will become an executive vice president. "I felt the necessary need to keep Bernie involved," Jordan said. "He'll be my right-hand man. We've had a great relationship over the last year or so." Jordan said they may hire a GM to help with personnel issues. Charlotte has yet to replace assistant GM Karl Hicks, who took a job this spring with the ACC. The Olympian - 05/25 - 6:19 AM EST
Tim Leiweke, president of Anschutz Entertainment Group - which will manage the new downtown Sprint Center - was encouraged by comments from SuperSonics chairman Clay Bennett that he will consider the Kansas City market if his NBA club moves from Seattle. "We're talking to Clay, I'll leave it at that," Leiweke said after addressing the International Economic Development Council's conference Tuesday at the Westin Crown Center. "But let's be honest, here. If that franchise does move, the odds-on favorite is Oklahoma City. That said, Kansas City is in that mix." [READ]

Oden In Portland Talking Shoes
Seattle Times - 05/25 - 6:09 AM EST
Greg Oden's welcome-to-Portland moment came at 10,000 feet, when the man sitting next to him on an airplane opened his window shade. "He opened it up and I saw a mountain with snow on it," Oden said, referring to a view of Mount Hood. "I've never seen that, until now." Oden, one of the most sought-after college players to enter the NBA draft, stands a good chance of seeing more of Mount Hood if the Portland Trail Blazers do what many expect: Select the 7-footer with the first overall pick in the June 28 draft. It had been less than 24 hours since the Blazers, and Oden, learned that Portland won the draft lottery for the right to pick first; but already, Oden found himself in Portland. Long before the draft lottery results were announced Tuesday, Oden had agreed to fly to Portland to spend two days meeting with Nike representatives about a possible shoe contract. Oden said the coincidence of his Portland visit the day after the Blazers won the lottery hadn't struck him yet, even as people at the airport snapped photos of him with their cellphones. One man went as far as to shout, "Greg, you are in the right place!" "I haven't thought about it, to be honest," Oden said, his voice soft and his smile easy. "The lottery happened yesterday, so it's been crazy. I'm still like, 'Wow.' " [READ]
Miami's Veterans Must Decide By Draft
Miami Herald - 05/25 - 6:07 AM EST
With the Miami Heat moving swiftly into an offseason potentially full of changes, Heat coach Pat Riley said he expects the futures of both Alonzo Mourning and Gary Payton to be decided before the June 28 NBA Draft. Both are weighing up retirement. Riley, who begins a vacation on the West Coast next week, said he plans to meet with Mourning, 37, Payton, 38, and Eddie Jones, 35, when he returns to Miami to prepare for the draft. The Heat holds the No. 20 pick in what is regarded as one of the deepest drafts in recent years. What the Heat does with that pick -- options might include keeping it or packaging it in a trade -- will hinge at least in part on Mourning's decision. ''Obviously, I think Zo has a lot left, but [his decision] could change things there,'' Riley said. ``But we know where we need help and that's where we're going to attack in the draft. That's where we're going to attack in trades and free agency.'' [READ]
Lottery Success Makes Randolph Expendable In Portland?
Chicago Tribune - 05/25 - 6:04 AM EST
With Greg Oden all but assured of landing in Portland in June, Zach Randolph may be the odd man out in the Blazers frontcourt. Randolph, writes Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune, sounds like a perfect match for a team like the Bulls, a 6-foot-9-inch, 270-pound player with a rare, classic post-up game and outside shot. He averaged 23.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season, but with Oden and last year's No. 1 pick, LaMarcus Aldridge, there certainly is no room for Randolph in Portland. His time there was rumored to be up anyway, no matter whom the team would get in the draft. The most recent talk has the Trail Blazers trying to trade Randolph to the Washington Wizards , who are in desperate need of interior scoring. Perhaps in a multiteam deal with Atlanta? Antawn Jamison, who's going into his final contract season with the Wizards, could be part of a deal to offset Randolph's $13.3 million salary for next season. [READ]
Luck On Pistons' Side Again In Carbon Copy Game 2
Yahoo! - 05/25 - 5:55 AM EST
LeBron James missed a shot with 7.9 seconds left, allowing Detroit to escape again with a 79-76 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night and a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. On the previous possession, Rasheed Wallace made a fadeaway jumper on the baseline over James to put Detroit ahead. James, who passed up a shot in the final seconds of the series opener, dribbled into the lane and missed a spinning shot in the lane with Richard Hamilton draped on him. "I believe there was some contact, but there's been a lot of contact throughout this series," James said. "We're a no-excuse team and we can't look at the last play as why we lost. We just have to get better." Larry Hughes grabbed the offensive rebound after James missed, couldn't make a 10-footer and Anderson Varejao was just off on a tip. After Wallace grabbed the rebound, Cavs coach Mike Brown was called for a technical foul after arguing that James was fouled on his shot attempt. "I'm sure we feel lucky and they feel unlucky," Detroit coach Flip Saunders said. [READ]
Bob Hill Contacts Orlando Magic About Coaching Position
Orlando Sentinel - 05/25 - 5:50 AM EST
Brian Hill had been the ex-coach of the Orlando Magic for only a few hours when the club began fielding calls, e-mails and contacts from, or on behalf, of candidates looking to replace him. Hill was fired Wednesday afternoon and by nightfall, another coach named Hill expressed his interest in returning to Orlando -- and might even offer an intriguing package deal to the Magic. Bob Hill, a former Magic assistant who has been head coach of four NBA teams, told the Sentinel on Thursday that he had sent an e-mail to Magic President Bob Vander Weide. Bob Hill was fired by the Seattle SuperSonics this season, but he developed a close relationship with Sonics forward Rashard Lewis. Lewis is one of the star free agents available to the Magic this summer, along with point guard Chauncey Billups and guard Vince Carter. "I think Rashard would be one of the top 10 forwards in the East,'' Bob Hill said. Former Magic guard Brian Shaw, who is currently an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers , also wants to be considered for the Orlando opening. [READ] |
