Eumyang Five Element theory(陰陽五行論) is one of the most basic world view in the Asian society. The understanding of it is the key path to understand the Asian Studies. There is such another theory called Myungri philosophy(命理學). Basic fundamentals of Myungri philosophy has been formed from the Eumyang Five Element.
Unfortunately, today's trend of Myungri philosophy appears to be interpreted in many distorted ways, with the trend of the superficial interpretation.
This study theoretically examines how Eumyang Five Element theory has been accepted in Myungri Philosophy. Based on this, it defines how it is applied and interpreted to find out how Eumyang Five Element theory can be interpreted in terms of the modern view.
To achieve such purpose, this study reviews on the ancient philosophy how Eumyang Five Element theory had been used, and then on its interpretation in Myungri today by using the related literatures.
The details of this study are follows.
First, unlikely the interpretation focused on 'suppressing the strength and activating the weakness(抑扶)' by Myungri philosophy, the 'Gungtongbogam(窮通寶鑑)' reveals how the cycle of Eumyang Five Elements transforms by comparing the characteristics of the 'shibgan(十干)' with the 12-month of cycle of 'fortune telling by climate'. Therefore, this study examines the Myungri interpretation and its application shown in 'Gungtongbogam' in detail.
Second, the Five Element Mutual Creation and Incompatibility theory(相生相剋論) is one of the core methods in Myungri interpretation. Accordingly, this study classifies and examines, in terms of the Five Element Mutual Destiny Creation and Incompatibility theory, on the types such as Chungan(天干) producing Jiji(地支), Chungan de-activating Jiji, Jiji producing Chungan and Jiji de-activating Ganji(干支) and Ganji with the same Chungan and Jiji.
Third, the Five Element Mutual Creation and Incompatibility theory takes a very important role when defining the Yongshin(用神). As the Eumyang theory explains the transformation procedure of the seasons, this paper reviews on what Yongshin means in relation with the season.
Fourth, the destiny four pillars change according to the Eumyang Five Elements and the month signs. For example, we can see that the Tree-Day destiny holder applies only 'Byeong(丙)' and 'Gye(癸)' for a year in case of the Eulmok's(乙木) 'Hiyongjeyo(喜用提要, to know how to deal with the destiny well)'. Namely, only July-tree destiny holder first uses 'Byeong' and later applies 'Gye', which means the 6 months(October, November, December, January and February) are for the use of 'Byeong' and the remaining 6 months are for the use of 'Gye'. In this way, the destiny with conforming 5 elements to the season becomes rich and other destiny becomes poor. So the importance is the age of the month is very important. Accordingly, its relationship with age of the moon is also important to examine.
However, as this study is based on the ancient documents and focused on the application of Eumyang Five Element theory according to the zodiac, it may provide the consistent explanation of the modern Myungri theory. Further studies will be more necessary in order to establish the academic foundation of Myungri that lightens the destiny of modern people.
