Buddha Power in France
Pierre was able to overcome the sense of guilt linked to the Catholic values of his youth. Catherine has finally ignored the criticism of her friends and has found the necessary energy to break up with her professional environment. Jacques has found a spiritual path which does not deny the physical dimension of human beings and has decided to become a Buddhist monk. Jean-Claude draws from his daily Buddhist spiritual practice the strength to fight his cancer without chemical drugs. Pierre, Catherine, Jacques and Jean-Claude are part of the 600000 French people who have chosen the Buddhist way of life in a country where the quest for Buddhist wisdom has become a real social issue.
Forty years ago, only a few university scholars were interested in the study of Buddhism. Dagpo Rimpoche, the first Tibetan lama to settle down in France in 1960 did not believe in the future of Buddhism in the West. He himself admitted that he only came to work with some Tibetologists and not to transmit the teachings of the Buddha.
Today five million French people have voiced their interest for Buddhism (according to a recent survey). More than 210 centers or temples have appeared all over France and their number has doubled during the last ten years. Even books dealing with Buddhism have become best sellers like the “Tibetan Book of Living and Dying” which has sold more than 300000 copies. A TV program called “Buddhist Voices” attracts every Sunday morning more than 200 to 300000 televiewers. French author and movie director Jean Claude Carriere, who co-wrote a book with the Dalai Lama and world renowned choreographer Maurice Bejart are only a few examples of French personalities who have been seduced by the philosophical and religious ideas of Buddhism.
A religion without a god and without dogmas, a rational and logical thought and a tolerant philosophy, Buddhism concentrates many of the values which are more and more ignored by western societies. The “Middle Path” which teaches the cessation of suffering for all beings is to the eyes of its followers the most modern and progressive spiritual path.
One of the most important Buddhist centers in France is located in the small village of Boulaye. It is where the first retreat center, the first stupa and the largest temple in continental Europe were created. Today the Temple of the Thousand Buddhas receives more than 70000 visitors per year. Local authorities and politicians have participated in major Buddhist events and have become conscious of the spiritual and cultural importance of the center. The village of Bourgogne has also become the site of the “Himalaya Festival” which attracts more tourists every year. As to the venerable lamas of the Dashang Kayu congregation, they have decided to build a giant prayer wheel with ten tons of sacred mantras which will be placed in a big cylinder that the faithful will turn to accompany their wishes for universal happiness.
I hope that the power of the mantras will reach the four corners of this world without American interference!
