I
My father,
He never came back home before the sun set
He returned home early today, though there's a lot of sunshine left.
My father,
He never showed tears to me so far
But he’s so full of tears today that he’s released a package of it.
My father,
He suggested to go to an amusement park Dream Land next Sunday to buy cotton candies and balloons and take a picture saying kimchi under the shade of the flowers together, only with my family.
‘Oh, if only it was a dream …’
My father,
While working at Samil Ironworks
He had his right thumb and index fingers cut off all at once.
He returned home early today, though there’s a lot of sunshine left.
Mom and I,
Not knowing what to do about it
With all our eyes getting fully wet
We just looked at each other.
II
Since Parents' Day is coming the day after tomorrow
Everyone buys note papers, envelopes, and stamps.
We are in the middle of writing letters during our Korean language class
Of course, for sending them to our parents.
I’m writing a letter to Mom, too.
Two years ago,
While working at a 13-story building construction site
My father tripped and fell, being seriously injured, though he barely survived.
Around this time last year
Mom left home after a bitter fight with Dad lying all day in his room
Saying she had somewhere to go for a while.
I’m writing a letter to Mom, too.
Afraid other kids would ever see my letter
I’m also writing down a false address on it.
Of course, attaching a stamp as well.
After all, it was a letter that couldn't be sent.
I brought it home and burned it down.
I burned it down with no one noticing.
Appreciation Review 感想
These are, above all, among the saddest stories under the sun.
1.
Rather than the pain of his father who had his fingers cut off while working in an ironworks factory, the tears of the family members just crying, while not knowing what to do, are even more heartbreaking.
2.
The child was so filled with anger towards her mother that he secretly burned the letter he had written.
And yet, I wonder how much pain he had felt after burning it.
He might have shed tears of regret endlessly due to a deep yearning for his mother.
Ah, these seem to be such heartbreaking and sad stories to me.
