Amotz Zahavi는 『The Handicap
Principle: A Missing Piece of Darwin's Puzzle(1997)』의 13장 “The Social Insects: Why Help The
Queen?”
Haldane’s example, however, has the
same weakness that the theory of group selection does: it is vulnerable to
social parasitism. The basic fallacy in Haldane’s argument can be illustrated by a variation on his story about the
drowning brother. Let’s assume that instead of two
brothers walking by the riverside, we have three or four. One of them falls
into the river, and another jumps in to save him. The others stand by, doing
nothing. All brothers will receive the same genetic gain if the rescue is
successful; but the rescuer risks injury or even death, while the ones standing
by risk nothing – that is, the slackers’ total gain will be greater. The altruist, then, will benefit less than a selfish brother, and on
average, the number of altruistic genes in the next generation will decrease rather than increase.
Thus, group selection theory and kin selection theory have the same
flaw; they invite social parasitism. In fact, kin selection is simply group
selection among relatives. We find it strange that despite this, many
researchers who reject group selection see kin selection as a viable, stable
mechanism, like individual selection.
And if the driving force behind the evolution of altruism is the
benefit gained by kin, shouldn’t the same logic militate
strongly against aggression toward kin? Yet we often see violent struggles
between kin collaborators. Indeed, these struggles frequently end with one or
more of the collaborators being wounded or even killed. The theory of kin
selection does not explain why it is that relatives do not avoid harming each
other in their struggles.
The kin effect – the impact these altruistic traits may have on the reproduction of
the individual’s kin – cannot be the factor that selects
the tendency to invest in altruistic acts.
Zahavi
그래서 Hamilton이 「The
genetical evolution of social behaviour I and II(1964)」에서 수학적 모델을 제시한 것이다.
Richard
Models of Social Evolution: A Guide for the Perplexed(2007)』를 보는 것이 나을 것이다.
Charlesworth’s remarks come at the end of
an important, and rightly influential (Parker 1978), paper in which he makes
the following point. If a gene for sibling altruism has full penetrance, those
members of a clutch or litter who possess it will tend to sacrifice themselves
for those who do not. Therefore the gene will disappear from the population unless
we conceptually save it by assuming low penetrance. This is a good point, but
in principle it applies to the parent/offspring relationship too. (「Twelve
Misunderstandings of Kin Selection(1979)」, Richard Dawkins, http://c2377742.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/Twelve%20Misunderstandings%20of%20Kin%20Selection.pdf,
Charlesworth, B. (1978): Some models of the evolution of altruistic behaviour
between siblings. J. Theoret. Biol. 72,
297—319.
