Bob은 Robert의 애칭
이 표현의 어원은 다음으로 보고 있습니다.
1887년, Arthur Balfour라는 사람이 그의 삼촌이자 당시 총리였던 Robert Bob Cecil의 지명으로 총리 바로 밑에 비서실장이 됩니다. 그러니까 Bob 삼촌의 든든한 백으로 쉽게 출세한 거죠. 이를 두고 말이 많았는데요. 이 사건 후부터 Bob's your uncle이라는 표현을 쓰게 되었다고 합니다.
일이 쉽게 잘 풀린다는 뜻으로 "밥이 네 삼촌이잖아." 하는 거죠.
Everything is all right. 이라는 뜻입니다.
그래서 우리말 번역으로 만사형통이라고 하는 겁니다.
참고로, Bob's your uncle 뒤에 and Nellie's your aunt 나 and Fanny's your aunt가 붙을 수 있는데요. 말을 일부러 더 장황하게 해서 웃기려고 한 거죠.
