* Chapter 5-1. Ecclesiastes 1(전도서 1장)*
Ecclesiastes [iklìːziǽstiːz] n.〖성서〗 전도서(구약 성서 중의 한 편)
The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
- 예루살렘의 왕이자 다윗의 아들인 전도자의 말씀들이다:
"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."
- “허무하다! 허무하다!” 전도자가 말한다. “완전히 허무하다! 모든 것이 허무하다.”
meaningless n. 허무한, 의미 없는. utterly ad. 완전히, 아주.
What does man gain from all his labor / at which he toils under the sun?
- 사람이 자기 모든 노력으로부터 무엇을 얻는가 / 태양 아래에서 고생하는 (노력으로부터)?
gain v. 얻다, 획득하다. labor n. 노동, 노력.
toil v. 고생하다, 노력하다.
Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.
- 한 세대가 오고 한 세대가 간다, 그러나 땅은 영원히 남아있다.
generation n. 세대. remain v. 남아있다.
The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.
- 태양이 뜬다 그리고 진다, 그리고 뜬 곳으로 급히 돌아간다.
hurry vi. 급히 가다.
The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course.
- 바람은 남쪽으로 불다가 북쪽으로 돌고; 이리저리 가다가, 자기 진로로 돌아간다.
round and round : 빙글빙글, 이리저리.
All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.
- 모든 강물은 바다로 흘러가지만, 바다는 결코 가득 차지 않는다. 강물이 흘러나온 곳으로, 그들(강물)은 다시 돌아간다.
stream n. 강물, 냇물.
All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.
- 모든 것들이 피곤하다, 사람이 말로 할 수 있는 것 이상으로. 눈은 보기에 결코 충분하지 않고, 또한 귀는 듣기에 가득 채워지지 않는다.
wearisome a. 피곤한, 지루한.
more than : ~이상으로.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
- 있었던 것이 또다시 있을 것이고, 행해진 것이 또다시 행해진다; 태양아래에 새로운 것이 아무것도 없구나.
Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.
- 사람이 다음과 같이 말할 무언가가 있을까, “보라! 이것은 새로운 것이다”?
오래 전에 여기서도 이미 그러했다; 우리 시대 이전에도 여기선 그러했다.
There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow.
- 예전의 사람들에 기억은 없다, 그리고 아직 나오지 않은 사람들도 뒤따르는 사람들에 의해 기억되지 않을 것이다.
remembrance n. 기억.
I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
- 나, 전도자는, 예루살렘에서 이스라엘의 왕이었다.
I devoted myself / to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men!
- 나는 내 자신을 헌신했다 / 지해로써 하늘아래 행해지는 모든 것을 연구하고 탐구하는 것에. 하나님이 사람들에게 내려놓으신 정말로 무거운 짐이구나!
devote v. 헌신하다. explore v. 탐험(탐구)하다.
burden n. 짐. lay-laid-laid v. 놓다, 두다.
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- 나는 태양 아래에서 행해지는 모든 것들을 보아왔다; 그것들 모두는 허무하다, 바람 따라잡기이다. (뜬구름 잡기이다).
chasing n. 추적, 따라잡기.
What is twisted cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.
- 구부러져 있는 것은 펴질 수 없다; 모자라는 것은 세어질 수 없구나.
twist v. 구부리다. straighten v. 쭉 펴다.
lacking a. 부족한.
I thought to myself, "Look, I have grown and increased in wisdom / more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge."
- 나는 스스로 생각했다, “보라, 나는 지혜에 있어서 성장하고 증가해왔다 / 나에게 앞서 예루살렘을 통치한 누구보다 더; 나는 많은 지혜와 지식을 경험해왔다.”
increase v. 증가하다. rule v. 통치하다.
experience v. 경험하다.
Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
- 그리고 나는 지혜에 대한 이해를 위해 몸 바쳤다, 그리고 또한 광기와 바보스러움에 대한 이해에, 그러나 나는 알았다 이것, 역시, 뜬구름 잡기라는 것을.
apply oneself to : ~에 몸 바치다, 헌신하다.
madness n. 광기, 미친 것.
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.
- 많은 지혜는 많은 슬픔을 가져온다; 더 많은 지식은, 더 많은 비애를 가져온다.
sorrow n. 슬픔. grief n. 슬픔, 비애.

I thought in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." But that also proved to be meaningless.
- 나는 마음속으로 생각했다, “자 이제, 나는 기꺼이 너를 시험할 것이다 무엇이 좋은 것인지 알아내기 위해서.” 그러나 그 일 역시 허무하다고 판명 났다.
test v. 시험하다. with pleasure : 기꺼이.
prove v. 입증하다, 판명하다.
"Laughter," I said, "is foolish. And what does pleasure accomplish?"
- “웃음,” 나는 말했다, “(웃음도) 바보 같은 짓이다. 그리고 쾌락이 무엇을 달성하겠는가?”
laughter n. 웃음.
foolish a. 바보 같은.
pleasure n. 기쁨, 쾌락.
accomplish v. 이루다, 성취하다, 달성하다.
I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly--my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see / what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven / during the few days of their lives.
- 나는 와인으로 내 기운을 내려고 했다, 그런데 어리석음을 맞이하며 -- 내 마음은 여전히 나를 지혜로 인도했다. 나는 알고 싶었다 / 하늘 아래에서 사람들이 행하기에 보람 있는 것이 무엇인지 / 그들 삶의 적은 나날들 동안에.
cheer oneself : 기운 내다, 북돋우다.
embrace v. 얼싸안다, 맞이하다. folly n. 어리석음.
worthwhile a. 보람 있는, 가치 있는.
I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards.
- 나는 큰 계획을 착수했다: 나는 나를 위해 집들을 지었고 포도원을 건설했다.
undertake-undertook-undertaken v. 착수하다.
project n. 프로젝트, 계획.
plant v. 심다; 건설하다. vineyard n. 포도원.
I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.
- 나는 정원과 공원을 만들었고 그것들 안에 모든 종류의 과일 나무를 심었다.
I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees.
- 나는 우거진 나무숲에 물을 대기 위해서 저수지를 만들었다.
reservoir n. 저수지. water v. ~에 물을 대다.
grove n. 작은 숲.
flourish v. 번성하다, (숲이) 우거지다.
I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.
- 나는 남자 여자 노예들을 샀고 내 집에서 태어난 다른 노예들을 가졌다. 나는 또한 더 많은 소 떼와 양 떼를 소유했다 내 앞에 예루살렘에서 누구보다 더.
male n. 수컷의, 남자의. female a. 암컷의, 여성의.
own v. 소유하다.
herds and flocks : 양 떼와 소 Ep.
I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem as well--the delights of the heart of man.
- 나는 스스로를 위해 은과 금을 긁어모았고, 왕들과 지방의 보물을 (모았다).
나는 남자와 여자 가수들을 얻었고, 후궁 역시 얻었다 -- 남자의 가슴에 기쁨인 (후궁).
amass v. 긁어 모으다. treasure n. 보물.
province n. 지방. acquire v. 얻다, 획득하다.
singer n. 가수. harem n. 후궁.
as well : 역시. delight n. 기쁨.
I became greater by far / than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.
- 나는 훨씬 더 대단하게 되었다 / 나 앞에 예루살렘에서 누구보다 더. 이 모든 것에 내 지혜가 나와 함께 있었다.
by far : 훨씬. stay with : ~과 함께 있다.
I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
- 나는 내 눈이 갈망하는 아무것도 내 스스로에서 부정하지 않았다; 나는 내 마음에 기쁨이 없기를 거절했다. 내 마음은 내 일 모두에서 기쁨을 취했고, 이것은 내 모든 노동의 보상이었다.
deny v. 부정하다. desire v. 원하다, 갈망하다.
refuse v. 거절하다. reward n. 보상, 답례.
labor n. 노동.
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
- 그러나 내가 내 손이 행해온 모든 것과 내가 성취하기 위해 수고해온 것을 내려다보았을 때, 모든 것은 허무했다, 뜬구름 잡기 였다; 태양 아래에서 아무것도 얻어지지 않았다.
survey v. 내려다보다, 전망하다. toil v. 수고하다.
achieve v. 성취하다. gain v. 얻다.
a chasing after the wind : 뜬 구름 잡기 (바람 뒤를 쫓아가기).
Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king's successor do / than what has already been done?
- 그 후 나는 지혜에 관해 곰곰히 생각하기로 내 생각의 방향을 돌렸다, 또한 미친 짓과 바보스러움에 관해(곰곰히 생각해 보기로). 왕의 계승자가 무엇을 더 할 수 있을까 / 이미 행해진 것보다 더?
thought n. 생각. consider v. 고려하다, 곰곰이 생각하다.
successor n. 계승자, 상속자.
I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.
- 나는 지혜가 바보스러움보다 더 좋다는 것을 알았다, 빛이 어둠보다 더 좋은 것과 같이.
just as : ~과 같이.
The wise man has eyes in his head, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.
- 지혜로운 사람은 그의 머리에 눈이 있고, 반면에 바보는 어둠 속에서 걷는다; 그러나 나는 깨닫게 되었다 같은 운명이 그들 둘 다에게 덮쳐온다는 것을.
realize v. 깨닫다. fate n. 운명.
overtake v. 덮쳐오다; 따라잡다.
Then I thought in my heart, "The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?" I said in my heart, "This too is meaningless."
- 그 때 나는 마음속으로 생각했다, “바보의 운명이 나에게 또한 덮쳐올 것이라고. 그 때 내가 현명해 짐으로써 무엇을 얻을 수 있을까?” 나는 마음속으로 말했다, “이것 역시 의미 없다.”
For the wise man, like the fool, will not be long remembered; in days to come both will be forgotten. Like the fool, the wise man too must die!
- 왜냐하면 바보와 같이 현명한 사람도 오래 기억되지 않을 것이기 때문이다; 앞으로 올 나날들에 둘 다 잊혀질 것이다. 바보와 같이, 현명한 사람 역시 죽어야만 한다!
So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- 그래서 나는 삶을 미워했다, 태양 아래서 행해진 일은 나에게 비통했다. 그것 모두 허무했다, 뜬 구름 잡기 였다.
hate v. 미워하다. grievous a. 비통한, 슬픈.
I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.
- 나는 내가 태양 아래에서 수고한 모든 일들을 미워했다, 왜냐하면 내가 내 뒤에 올 사람에게 그것들을 남겨둬야만 하기 때문이다.
leave v. 남겨두다.
And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work / into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.
- 그가(앞으로 올 사람) 현명한 사람일지 바보일지 누가 알까? 그러나 그는 모든 과업을 통제할 것이다 / 내가 태양 아래에서 내 노력과 기술을 쏟아 부은(모든 과업을). 이것 역시 허무하다.

control v. 통제하다. pour v. 쏟아 붓다.
effort n. 노력. skill n. 기술.
So my heart began to despair / over all my toilsome labor under the sun.
- 그래서 내 마음은 절망하기 시작했다 / 태양 아래에서 모든 나의 고생스러운 노력에 대하여.
despair v. 절망하다. toilsome a. 고생스러운, 힘든.
For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, / and then he must leave all he owns / to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.
- 왜냐하면 사람이 지혜, 지식 그리고 기술을 가지고 자기 일을 할지라도, 그 후 그는 그가 소유한 모든 것을 남겨둬야만 한다 / 그것을 위해 일해오지 않은 사람에게. 이것 역시 허무하고 큰 불행이다.
misfortune n. 불행.
What does a man get / for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun?
- 사람이 무엇을 얻을까 / 그가 태양 아래에서 일하는 모든 수고와 열망하는 노력에 대해서.
toil n. 수고. anxious a. 열망하는.
striving n. 노력. labor v. 일하다. n. 노동, 노력.
All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.
- 그의 나날 내내 그의 일은 고통과 슬픔이다, 심지어 밤에도 그의 마음은 쉬지 못한다. 이것 역시 허무하다.
grief n. 슬픔, 비탄. rest v. 휴식하다, 쉬다.
A man can do nothing better / than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,
- 사람은 더 좋은 아무것도 할 수 없다 / 먹고 마시고 자기 일에서 만족을 찾는 것 이상으로. 이것 역시, 나는 안다, 하나님의 손으로부터 나온다는 것을.
satisfaction n. 만족.
for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?
- 왜냐하면 그분 없이, 누가 먹을 수 있고 또는 즐거움을 찾을 수 있겠는가?
To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task / of gathering and storing up wealth / to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- 그분을 기쁘게 하는 사람에게, 하나님은 지혜와, 지식 그리고 행복을 주신다, 그러나 죄인에게 그분은 고된 업무를 주신다 / 부를 모으고 축적해야하는(업무를) / 그것을 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 사람에게 넘겨주기 위해서. 이것 역시 허무하다, 뜬 구름 잡기이다.
please v. 기쁘게 하다. sinner n. 죄인.
task n. 일, 고된 업무. gather v. 모으다.
store v. 축적하다, 저축하다. wealth n. 부, 재산.
hand over : 넘겨주다.
