School speedsters nabbed in Bay blitz
A total of 238 drivers were caught speeding past Bay schools over seven days this month.
Speed cameras nabbed 154 people and police issued 84 other speeding infringements to drivers putting their foot down around Tauranga schools.
A police operation in the Western Bay from July 20-26, targeted drivers around all education centres, including playcentres and kindergartens.
Officer in charge of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion of Tauranga South Police, said the highest speed recorded in a 50km/h zone was 79km/h past Te Puna Primary School.
Mr Campion said while a high percentage of drivers monitored within school zones were travelling at or below the speed limit, there was room for improvement and police would continue to monitor school zones throughout the school term. Infringement notices are issued to drivers driving at 5km/h or more above the posted speed limit within 20m on either side of any school boundary.
The key risk times are between 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm weekdays. Statistically, the most at risk age group is 11-15-years.
Primary school zones also present high risk, Mr Campion said.
In an urban environment, a child struck by a vehicle travelling at 60km/h has only a 15 per cent chance of survival.
When speed is reduced to 50km/h, the chance of survival increases to 55 per cent.
