Uiseong Garlic
By D.J. YOON
Last fall, we came up to Seoul
After selling the fields
Saying we would make more money
Of course it would be better than farming
Dad looking for a job
Couldn't find one
Now working at a building construction site
No owner in hand
Of course it would be better than living in the countryside
Mom with no job now working at a pesticide packaging factory
For some reason, before she came up
Never had a cold, but she keeps pressing her side and coughing.
A few days ago, Mom went to Gyeongdong Market on her day off
And bought garlic to make kimchi.
Wondering if I paid a little too much
She bought three bundles because it was garlic from Uiseong.
Until the spring of the year before last
My family lived in Uiseong
Harvesting five or six hundred jeobs of garlic.
The day Mom bought garlic I actually looked at it more closely
Because it was Uiseong garlic.
When I looked at the garlic the dark red soil that had followed the garlic all the way to Seoul looked like the soil of the garlic field where we farmed.
I took out a garlic clove and put it up to my nose and oh, the spicy smell stung my nose.
I don’t think we’ve ever made kimchi with Uiseong garlic since we came up to Seoul.
I wish we had made kimchi this year.
I wish we had made it quickly and tasted the taste of Uiseong garlic soon.
I still have to wait a few more days to make kimchi, though.
I have to wait until Mom takes another day off.
That’s why the Uiseong garlic is still standing in the kitchen.
In the fall of the year before last we came up to Seoul
Hoping that it would be better than farming.
*1 jeob of garlic = 100 bulbs of garlic
Appreciation Review 感想
Uiseong garlic is a longing for the poet.
This poem poignantly captures the bitter sweet experience of rural-to-urban migration.
It juxtaposes the idealized vision of city life with the harsh reality, highlighting themes of economic struggle, nostalgia, and the enduring connection to one's roots.
The poet uses the garlic from Uiseong as a powerful symbol of the family's past and their enduring attachment to it, contrasting it with their present struggles and the longing for the comfort of their former life.
