Living Excellent Lives(4): Morally
Malachi 4:2
"But for you who revere my mane, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall."
Imagine me driving onto the campus next weekend and seeing a couple thousand people from this service holding kind of a protest in front of the front lobby. As I get closer, I see some of the cards, the placards that you're waving in the air. One of them reads "Following God Doesn't Pay." Another reads "Serving Jesus Christ is an Exercise in Futility."
Then suppose the protest song that you're singing has words like these: "I gave my God everything. He gave me nothing at all. I trusted him fully. He abandoned me completely. I honored him with all of my heart, and he dishonored me all of my life." Now can you imagine how unnerving that would be for someone like me who loves you and tries to lead you?
In Malachi's day, there were a group of people who claimed to be God-fearing people who gathered around one day, and they said some terrible words. You want to hear what they said? This comes right out of the Book of Malachi, chapter three, near the end. Here's what they're saying, "It is pure vanity to serve our God. It is a waste of time to serve our God. What do we profit by keeping his commandments? Nothing. We profit nothing by keeping his commandments. We look at the arrogant ones, the unrighteous, people far from God, and they're happy. Evildoers not only prosper, but when they put God to the test, they escape."
Can you imagine? What are they saying? They're saying, "It doesn't pay to lead a pure, moral, excellent life. It doesn't pay to honor God. People far from God who are living on the wild side of life, they're prospering, they've got no troubles, they've got no difficulties. Here we are trying to honor God, what do we get? We get the divine shaft." Now you know, Malachi was the prophet sent by God to reestablish standards of excellence amongst God's people excellence spiritually and relationally, financially and morally.
Now before I tell you how Malachi responds to that crowd, let's just be honest and admit that from time to time we think the same kinds of thoughts. We probably would never protest or carry around a placard, but many of us see people living on the wild side who seem to getting away with it. And some of us who are really meticulously trying to honor God, well, we struggle. We have a hard time. What's that all about?
Become a 'chump'
Anybody know what a chump is? Well, when I was growing up, we called certain people chumps. Chumps were wide-eyed do-gooders, sickeningly pious and righteous people who followed every rule and regulation to the T and expected to be rewarded for doing so.
A chump with 11 items in his arms dutifully steps out of the ten item express lane at the supermarket, waits 20 minutes in the regular lane, feeling a little superior the whole time. Chumps figure out the exact tip right down to the penny when they go to a restaurant, and they'll go up and get change at the counter if they can come back and give exactly the right amount. You know the type I'm talking about.
Now in my growing up years, I would have rather been called almost anything other than a chump. In fact, I remember doing all sorts of risky and rebellious activities to prove to all my peers that I was no chump. But then late in my teenage years, I became a Christian. And when I became a Christian my life really did change from the inside.
I was so overwhelmed by this thing called grace that I wanted to spend every day of the rest of my life figuring out how to say thanks to God and how to spread the message of grace to anyone who would listen to me. And without me even knowing it, I slowly started to exhibit "chump-like" characteristics.
High school and college age friends would call me and say, "Hey Bill, 20 or 30 of us are going out to the old farmhouse this weekend, and we're all going to get wasted all weekend. You've got to come." And in chump-like fashion I'd say, "Aw, you've got to count me out guys. I've got other stuff going."
Even later on in college, you know, friends were trying to figure out what grad school or business school to go to so they could make a ton of money. I, at that time, was fasting and praying over the will of God for my life and whether or not to start a little church in a movie theater. How chumpy can you get?
But you know while this was happening to me, I also had a vague sense of belief that chump-hood would pay, that God would bless my life if I was seeking to honor him with the moral choices of my life. Now, I didn't just make that up, I read that in Scripture.
For instance, let me read Psalm 1 for you. "Blessed are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path that the sinners take or sit in the seat of scoffers. Blessed are the people who delight in the Word of God and meditate on it day and night. They're going to be like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season. Their leaves will not wither, and whatever they do will prosper. The unrighteous are not so! They're like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the unrighteous will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the unrighteous will perish."
