The Competitive Class of Exhibits
Exhibits seen at Washington 2006 in the Competitive Class are already top winners of their respective national competitions. More than twice as many exhibitors applied for Washington 2006 than there were frames for. Some 640 competitive exhibits will be on display, totalling over 60,000 pages of philatelic material. Each entrant pays a fee to defray judging and handling costs.
The Competitive Class is sub-divided into several specialized classes at the international level dealing with a particular aspect of philately:
Aerophilately- air post and lighter than air ships Astrophilately- space-related Maximaphilately- maximum cards (postcards with related stamp, postmark) Postal History- covers, postal markings, routes and rates Postal Stationery- postal cards, envelopes, etc. Revenues- tax stamps and their usages on documents Thematics- telling a story through the use of philatelic items Traditional- focus on a stamp or set, its production and varieties One Frame- any of the categories but presented in a single 16 page frame Youth- exhibits created by collectors under the age of 21 Philatelic Literature- books, catalogs, magazines, etc. dealing with philatelic subjects
Exhibiting rules and judging guidelines are based on international standards set by the FIP, the International Federation of Philately, based in Switzerland. All judges have been international exhibitors themselves at one time, and are qualified to judge specific classes in their area(s) expertise. Judging is done in teams on a points basis, with the final medal-level award dictated by the points total.
Like the Olympics, there are several medal award levels. From lowest to highest, they are: Bronze, Silver Bronze, Silver, Large Silver, Vermeil, Large Vermeil, Gold, and Large Gold. Special prizes also may be awarded for merit at the discretion of the judges. See these on our Awards Page.
