The European-led operation EUNAVFOR European Union Naval Force Aspides is supposed to ensure the protection of ships on one of the most important international trade routes against attacks by the Houthi militias from Yemen. The German Navy frigate used for this purpose has now used its on-board weapons for the first time.
On February 23, 2024, the German Bundestag decided to deploy the frigate “Hessen” into EUNAVFOR European Union Naval Force to send Aspides. With German participation, the operation makes an important contribution to protecting ships in the operational area of the southern Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab from missile and drone fire as well as from attempts at hijacking using helicopters or boats.
First use of weapons
On February 26, 2024, the frigate fought a drone with guided missiles. All criteria for combat were met: the drone was on direct approach without a friend-enemy identifier. The decision to combat the attack was made in close coordination with the allied units in the maritime area and the relevant command posts. The missiles could not reach the target. According to the initial assessment, this is due to a technical error on board the frigate. The error was quickly identified and could be remedied immediately. There are no deficits in the effectiveness chain of the weapon system used.
The following day, February 27, 2024, the “Hessen” patrolled the southern Red Sea in the region assigned to her. At around 8 p.m. Central European Time, an unmanned drone detected it. Shortly afterwards this was successfully combated. Around a quarter of an hour later, the frigate detected a second drone approaching the ship. This was also successfully combated.
Information from the operational area is sensitive
The safety of the ship and crew is paramount. This requires us to handle sensitive information about the frigate “Hessen” and its deployment with particular care. That hasn't always been the case in recent days. Every detail is very likely to be evaluated by possible opposing actors in the region and used for future attack strategies.
Ammunition supply
The frigate “Hessen” began operations with a weapons mix adapted to the threat situation with an ammunition inventory of 100 percent. The resupply of ammunition during operations depends on the actual ammunition needs of the unit.
The frigate's anti-aircraft capability is internationally recognized
Our US allies United States Navy has so much confidence in the German Navy and its capabilities that in 2022 they have given the frigate “Hessen” responsibility for all formation air defense and airspace coordination to protect one of their aircraft carrier battle groups.

첫댓글 MQ-9에 대고 미사일을 쐈는데 맞추진 못했다고 하던데, 쏘고 나서 오사인 거 알고 자폭시킨 건지.
슈피겔은 맞추지 못한 것으로 보도하네요.
Fortunately, two missiles fired at the drone missed their target and crashed into the sea due to "a technical defect," according to Der Spiegel news magazine, which also claimed that the UAV in question was a US Reaper reconnaissance drone.
