Could this be the season in which Anthony Davis rockets to NBA superstardom?
The numbers
The supporting cast
serious rim protection and rebounding.
Putting it all together

Get a good look at Anthony Davis, America. The FIBA World Cup might be your best chance for a while to see the monster that is taking over the NBA.
The FIBA World Cup officially kicks off this weekend after a series of exhibition games that have done little to shake Team USA's standing as the FIBA favorites.
With Paul George injured and Kevin Duranthaving withdrawn from competition, Team USA has indeed lost some star power in recent weeks, but the silver lining is that the team is now firmly in the ubiquitous hands of Davis.
Make sure to get your fill now. With five games in the next six days, the national audience will have an opportunity to see Davis more in the next week than they will all NBA season.
Because New Orleans represents the NBA's smallest TV market, the Pelicans will be featured on national television only twice this season, with seven other tilts being broadcast on NBATV.
It's time to embrace the Year of Anthony Davis. And it all starts right now in the FIBA World Cup.
Davis' ascension pretty much took place overnight, so if you feel like you've missed out, don't sweat it. Two years ago in the London Olympics, the Kentucky Wildcats product could barely get off the bench for Team USA. Now, after two seasons in the NBA, he has established himself not just as the best player on the American roster, but perhaps in the entire FIBA World Cup field.
In Team USA's final exhibition tune-up Tuesday, Davis finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 steals -- all in 19 minutes of action. Nineteen minutes. The starting center for the Americans has put up jaw-dropping numbers so far in the international play. In four games, he's averaging 24.5 points, 11.6 rebounds, 6.7 blocks and 2.7 steals every 36 minutes. That is not a typo -- 6.7 blocks every 36 minutes. Step aside Derrick Rose, James Harden, Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving. This tournament is all about the big man in the middle.
Davis is a 6-foot-11 freak, a basketball prodigy who is just now starting to tap into his immense potential. Last season, he quietly averaged 20.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and a league-leading 2.8 blocks per game. Know how many players in NBA history have put up those numbers in their age-20 season? Try one: Shaquille O'Neal. No one else has put up those numbers at such a young age.
The statistical accolades don't end there. His 26.5 player efficiency ranked fourth in the NBA last season behind some guys named Durant, LeBron James and Kevin Love. Not bad company. Remember, Davis is younger than Shabazz Napier,Doug McDermott and Mitch McGary, who were all just selected in the first round of the 2014 draft. Believe it or not, Davis just turned 21.
At this point, NBA peers have given up trying to draw human comparisons to Davis. When he entered the league, we heard a lot of Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett parallels. But after facing off against Davis last week, Brazilian big man Néné told NBA.com whom Davis reminded him of.
"Dhalsim," Nene said. "The Street Fighter. Like a cartoon. With both hands. He was catching everything. Yeah."
For the uninitiated, Dhalsim is the Indian yogi from the video game "Street Fighter" whose superpower allows him to extend his arms, legs and neck like a bloodthirsty Stretch Armstrong doll. Except Davis isn't a made-up cartoon character. He's the dark horse candidate for NBA's MVP next season.
Believe the MVP hype. It might seem outlandish considering Davis didn't catch a single vote in the MVP ballot last season. But there's a simple reason for that: The Pelicans weren't any good. No matter how ridiculous Davis was last season, he's not going to get MVP hype until his supporting cast improves.
As I dug up last season, the average record for the team of a fifth-place finisher in the MVP race is 52-30. Also, 83 percent of players who have been voted into the top five have hailed from 50-win teams. The Pelicans were just 34-48 last season.
Translation: The Pelicans need to be darn good in order to deliver Davis the attention he deserves.
There's hope in New Orleans. This offseason, the Pelicans took advantage of Houston's desperation to move salary in their Chris Bosh chase and snagged a top defensive center in Omer Asik from Houston in exchange for some roster filler and a protected 2015 first-round pick.
Asik will provide a massive upgrade overAlexis Ajinca, whom the Pelicans picked up off the scrap heap and slotted in their starting lineup for 30 games next to Davis. It was a paper-thin front line that rarely produced positive results; the Pelicans were outscored by 9.9 points every 100 possessions with the two on the court together last season, per NBA.com. If all goes well this season, that lineup will be a distant memory next season.
Asik and Davis may be the toughest front line to score against in the NBA. With Davis' go-go-gadget arms practically covering the entire three-point arc combined with Asik's strength and heady pick-and-roll play inside, the Pelicans should improve drastically on the defensive end, where they finished 25th in the league in points allowed per possession. Asik had a rough season after Dwight Howard moved him out of the starting lineup, but the Pelicans were wise to buy low on Asik.
The explosive offensive potential was already there in New Orleans. In the 91 minutes that the five-man group of Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Ryan Anderson and Davis took the floor together, they hung 123.5 points per 100 possessions on their opponents, which was the second-highest rate in the league in as many minutes. Unfortunately, Anderson's season was cut short in January after needing to undergo spine surgery to alleviate a herniated disc in his neck.
Granted that's not a huge sample to go off of, but the Pelicans have plenty of reason to believe this is the season that Davis and the Pelicans can put it all together. Anderson, who was in the midst of a career-best season, is on the mend and could be back in time for training camp. With Anderson in the fold, the Pelicans can alternate between small ball and big smashmouth play depending on the matchup.
Not all metrics were high on Davis' play last season. ESPN's real plus-minus was far more reserved, rating Davis as only slightly above average on both ends of the floor. But the RPM framework has been harsh on other young superstars before. Despite the eye-popping box score numbers, Durant was rated as a below-average player in the NBA until his third season, when he skyrocketed to the fourth-best player in the league. In related news, Durant made the leap at age 21, the same age as Davis is now.
It all hinges on Davis' continued development. He has to refine the intricacies of being an NBA big man, especially in the pick-and-roll game, but there are signs in the early FIBA play that he's made progress in that area. His angles and timing have improved to the point where it seems he can be at two places at once. That's how he can pile up five blocks and three steals in less than two quarters of action.
If you've watched the early FIBA play, Davis is visibly stronger, too. Word from the Pelicans is that he's added about 15 pounds of muscle (the NBA standard) and his shoulders are noticeably thicker these days as he packs on the weight. Seemingly every other Davis basket in FIBA action has been an and-one opportunity where opponents have no choice but to foul him. That might not have happened two years ago when he looked like a puppy finding his way.
The Pelicans will certainly have an uphill climb in the stacked West, but the optimism is strong enough that the team received the second-most votes for Team Turnaround in the latest edition of ESPN Summer Forecast. A ceiling of 50 wins seems too high until we see Anderson back in action. But Davis and Asik will be a lightning-and-thunder headache for opposing teams this season.
We expected Davis to one day take the basketball world by storm. We just didn't think it would happen this soon. With increasingly off-the-charts numbers and a Pelicans team on the rise, this is the Year of Anthony Davis. Get on board. The bandwagon is filling up fast.
