이전의 영어공부와는 다른 차원이라고나 할까요.

저는 전형적인, 영어를 '감으로 하는 사람'이었습니다. 중고등학교 때부터 문법이라면 질색이었고 관계사니 형용사절이니 하는 문법 용어는 외계어로 들렸지요. 하지만 영어 자체에 흥미가 없는 편은 아니어서 감으로 하는 영어로도 수능이나 이런저런 영어 시험, 외국여행에서 간단한 회화 같은 건 그럭저럭 해나갔던 것 같아요.

그러나 ...언젠가부터 '감으로 하는 영어'의 한계가 느껴져오더군요. 가장 절망적일 때는 단어를 다 아는데도 문장의 의미를 전혀 파악할 수 없을 때였던 것 같아요. 해커스 같은 학원도 다녀보고, 이런저런 책들도 보고 했지만 별로 달라지는 건 없었어요. 해커스에서는 너무 빡빡하게 강행군을 하다보니 되려 몸만 축났구요. 한번은 번역가로 일하는 친구에게 어떻게 하면 영어문장을 잘 이해하고 번역할 수 있는지 물었어요. 그애 말이 제일 먼저 문장의 5 형식을 완벽하게 파악하고 나면 문장이 훨씬 빨리 이해될 거라고 하더라구요. 그래서 문법책을 펴놓고 들여다봤지만 별로 달라지는 걸 모르겠더라구요. 공식을 외우는 게 5형식을 익히는 건 아니니 말입니다. 제가 NSW의 광고글을 보고 다녀야겠다고 생각한 건 아마도 문장의 5형식으로부터 시작해야 한다는 말을 봤기 때문인 것 같아요. 어떤 학원에서도 이런 얘기를 들은 적이 없었고 아무도 정확히 그 의미를 설명해준 적이 없었거든요.

첫달에 5형식까지를 마치고 특히 보어에 보어를 익히고 나자 원서를 읽을 때나 영화를 볼 때 확실히 의미가 빨리 잡힌다는 느낌이 들기 시작했어요. 그림 그리기는 문장 구조를 익히는 데 가장 효과적인 방법이었어요. 그냥 보어는 보어구나 하는 식이 아니라 도대체 무엇이 보어인지 알지 못하면 넘어갈 수 없게 만든다고나 할까요. 두번째 달에 관계사들을 차례로 공부하고 나자 원서를 읽을 때 속도가 붙더라구요. 그 끝없이 나를 괴롭히던 무수한 that들...이제는 문장구조를 파악하는 데 길잡이 역할을 하고 있습니다. 여전히 이론서를 볼 때면 난잡한 문장들 속에서 허우적 거리지만, 복잡한 문장이 보이면 지레 포기하던 시절과는 달리, 꼼꼼히 읽어보면 구조가 파악됩니다. 앞으로 남은 건 계속해서 제 몫이겠지요.

NSW에서 영어를 마스터했다고 할 수는 없지만 혼자서도 해나갈 수 있는 연장을 얻었다는 생각이 들어요. 여기서 배운 것들은 최소한의 도구인 셈입니다. 이것들을 제대로 얻지 못한 상태에서는 아무리 밤을 새워가며 공부해도 별 진척이 없는 게 당연한 것이었습니다. 그동안의 제 영어공부가 그랬던 셈이지요.

석달 동안 힘든 여정이었지만 끝나니 여러가지로 아쉬움이 남는군요. 석달이라는 기간이 짧을 수도 있지만 길다면 긴 시간인데 완급 조절을 할 수 있었으면 하는 생각이 듭니다. 세번째 달에는 다들 긴장이 많이 풀렸던 것 같구요. 무엇보다 제가 최선을 다하지 못한 점이 가장 아쉽네요. 소모임에서 아쉬운 점들을 채우도록 해야겠지요.

I was the typical one who 'did' English just with 'the feeling'. From junior high, I've hated grammar and grammar terms like relative and clause and so on, it made me crazy just as hearing them. But I've been interested in English itself and somehow managed some English exams and casual conversationa in overseas trip.

However soon I had reached the limits of English with "the feeling". It was so desperate when I couldn't catch the meaning of the sentence even though I knew all words in it. So I enrolled English institutes like Hackers and listened AP news. but there was no fruit of them. Rather I just ruined my health by hard working at Hackers. Once I asked to one of my friends, the translator of films and TV shows, "how can I understand and translate English material easily?" and she suggested that "first you have to master 5 structures of sentence so you can get it more quickly." Therefore I tried it with some grammar books but they had done little. I just memorized formulas ( S+V, S+V+O...) but couldn't get real meaning of them. "From 5 structures of sentence, we have to start" , this word from NSW's posting made me enrolled NSW institute.

After first month, having studied 5 structures, especially  a complement , I 've felt that meanings were caught more quickly in reading English book or watching movie. The diagram is the best tool for practicing structure of sentence. practicing relative clauses made the speed at reading faster and faster. So many 'that's annoyed me, now give hint of grasping sentence structure. Though I am still troubled in reading difficult passages in theoretical book, it 's NOT like when i just gave up complicate sentence before, now I can get it with little concentration.

In NSW I've got the tools make possible keep going by myself. They're essential equipment for studying English. Without them, your effort gonna be just a waste of labor. It was my trial and error, too. It was the tough journey of 3 months and I feel something is missing. I think we needed some control of tension. Most of all, I'm so sorry that I couldn't do my best. And it's just my job to keep going on.
