Thus, failure of the DFL to work properly does not necessarily involve an immediate or obvious loss of function, especially to the untrained eye or to the less than exquisitely sensitive perceiver. Function can usually be transferred to the outer lines of myofascia, but with slightly less elegance and grace, and slightly more strain to the joints and peri-articular tissues, which can set up the conditions over time for injury and degeneration. Thus, many injuries are often predisposed by a failure within the DFL some years before the incident that reveals them takes place.

The pelvic floor or pelvic diaphragm is composed of muscle fibers of the levator ani, the coccygeus, and associated connective tissue which span the area underneath the pelvis. The pelvic diaphragm is a muscular partition formed by the levatores ani and coccygei, with which may be included the parietal pelvic fascia on their upper and lower aspects. The pelvic floor separates the pelvic cavity above from the perineal region (including perineum) below.

The endothoracic tissues of the DFL, from the diaphragmatic crura to the thoracic inlet, are not available to be reached by direct manipulative work. The entire rib cage forms a box in which there is always a negative pressure, pulling the tissues out against the ribs and attempting to pull the ribs in. These areas are amenable to indirect work, however, via the scalenes and neck fasciae from above, or via the peritoneum, the lower

edge of the rib cage, or the psoas from below.  

They may also be affected by the techniques of Visceral Manipulation. These techniques are ably set forth in several books by the developer of Visceral Manipulation, the French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral.1 0 , 1 1
