B. The essence of martial arts training is the principles of human life.
This chapter argues that the principles of human life are synonymous with the essence of martial arts training, making it the core. By replacing the term "martial arts training" with words representing one's desired or necessary activities in daily life, the fundamental essence of the content remains the same.
For example, whether it's a sport, a practice, a religion, or a philosophy, while the meanings of the words used may naturally differ, the basic essence of the content remains identical. In other words, whether it is the essence of martial arts training, the fundamental essence of a religion, or the essence of any profession, when viewed from the perspective of human life, the assertion is that all of these have a common essence beneath them. This fundamental essence refers to the unchanging, most primal aspects of human similarity throughout history.
As humans are a tiny part of nature, existing within three kinds of axiom: appearance, change, and disappearance, the fundamental essence must inevitably be the same.
Otherwise, everything discussed here would be fundamentally incorrect.
Therefore, the title of the English version, "Searching for the forgotten half in martial arts," could also be understood as "Searching for the forgotten half of the mind" instead of "the martial arts." The forgotten half of martial arts refers to the most fundamental and unchanging essence of martial arts training.
Even if one recognizes this essence, if it has not been learned or taught,
there may be a significant lack in the ability to see the whole based on this foundation.
Once acquainted with such a fundamental essence, one's perspective on the world becomes fair, unbiased, and the self of the mind and the self of the body can move together.
This communion between oneself and Nature is something that can be experienced.
The term "Experience" means becoming aware of the Energy Flow provided by nature, not just one or several times - occurrence, but anytime be needed.
If the fundamental essence of this energy flow is acquired in both body and mind,
it allows for the immediate identification and correction of deficiencies or mistakes in everyday life,
making it possible to cope with situations more efficiently.
Therefore, human life itself is a practice, and I stress this point consistently.
Anyway, each person may have their own thoughts; it's not to say that my own thoughts are always correct. Because the existence of things that cannot be seen or touched cannot be proven, and even if explained, I might be foolish to believe only in myself.
Therefore, through personal experiences within one's own thoughts, realizing one's own level of consciousness and understanding, only personal enlightenment will guide the individual to the right path.
That's the human created.
All the above texts attempt to illustrate a comprehensive and articulate expression of the idea that the essence of martial arts training aligns with the fundamental principles of human life. It emphasizes the universality of this essence across various domains, such as sports, religion, philosophy, and professions, when viewed from the perspective of human existence.
The text explores the notion that the core essence, rooted in unchanging aspects of human nature throughout history, is common to all these pursuits. It suggests that recognizing and understanding this fundamental essence is crucial for a holistic perspective, regardless of the specific terminology used to describe these activities.
The analogy of "Searching for the forgotten half" in martial arts, which could also be interpreted as "Searching for the forgotten half of the mind," adds depth to the discussion. It underscores the importance of not only recognizing but also learning and teaching this fundamental essence to achieve a more complete understanding.
The text further delves into the integration of oneself with nature, highlighting the idea that experiencing the flow of energy from nature can lead to a more balanced and efficient life. The emphasis on continuous practice and the assertion that human life itself is a form of practice are recurring themes, reinforcing the importance of personal enlightenment.
Overall, the text provides a thoughtful exploration of the interconnectedness between martial arts, the broader aspects of human life, and the significance of personal experiences and enlightenment in navigating one's path.
1. Life, or Practice
1) The fundamental core of martial arts training (human activity) is the flow of energy
- the philosophy of martial arts (philosophy of life).
All things in the world flow as one. In other words, everything is placed under one principle.
This principle refers to the most fundamental core, the foundation of all actions, and that is the flow of energy.
This concept is not limited to martial arts training alone; it encompasses all energies that move the universe.
Therefore, getting to understand the principle of that movement becomes fundamental; however, since it is something invisible, there is no way to prove it. To perceive the principle of that movement, one must continuously strive and progress. Therefore, in such a process, one may fall, only to realize afterward, but turning around, they may quickly forget. Occasionally, despite collisions, the understanding might remain elusive, prompting them to continually strive towards the right path for further enlightenment.
This very process is what defines human life, or the "practice" one should undertake throughout their existence.
The term "practice" or "seeking for the right path" is applicable to human practical life. Therefore, practicing should be highly realistic, practical, and useful, cautioning against being deceived by unrealistic, mystical, superstitious, or mysterious elements.
In essence, correct martial arts training is about constantly refining and maturing within the repetitive movements (actions) that apply similarly to all daily acts of life. The fundamental principle of correct training lies in the energy itself - it is love, light, and the foundation of the dynamic force of the universe. It is straightforward and easy to understand. This is the truth, the law, and the principle of Nature.
Praying day and night, making wishes, memorizing something to achieve personal goals, or sitting in meditation day and night, hoping to gain something, is an empty assertion. The distance between such practices and the way humans inherently realize and live their lives moment by moment is far. This is because, considering the consciousness and values of 21st-century modern individuals, the level of these practices lags considerably behind. Nowadays, with a smartphone on the palm of your hand, you can instantly know or find what you want with just one click.
Learning the essence of correct training (life) means recognizing the reality of the flow of energy that moves and sustains the universe and making the best effort to get close to it. This becomes the foundation and core of all scriptures, all systems of practice, and all mental and physical training. Otherwise, it is incorrect, as the fundamental essence is something unchanging throughout human history.
I am not an expert in writing, a scholar studying religion or philosophy, nor a knowledgeable person who has studied scriptures. I am simply making an effort to convey a sense of duty that comes from knowing the one principle that forms the basis of human life – something invisible and intangible but the most essential and fundamental. It is understood with a bit more interest and continuous effort than others. Once understood, one can live with their own values and consciousness, not swayed by the surroundings, striving to be a humble and free spirit in pursuit of their goals.
2) The Fundamental Enlightenment in Martial Arts Training
The fundamental enlightenment in martial arts training is not related to academic knowledge, and it has no connection to any renowned scriptures, no matter how knowledgeable or famous a person may be.
This statement has been echoed by numerous sages for thousands of years.
Even the founders of martial arts or leaders in sports, especially renowned figures in religion or philosophy, might not acquire the fundamental core, or enlightenment, of the Reality of Flow Energy through personal perception, sight, or hearing without grasping it through personal experience, which is akin to building a castle in the sand, unknowingly creating an illusion of elevation.
The saying that humans come into this world without awareness and leave it in a confused state emphasizes the importance of understanding this fundamental essence. Without this understanding, all the noise about gaining wisdom or reaching enlightenment through praying, reciting, or meditating day and night is futile.
One can evaluate the level of famous philosophers or religious figures who give lectures on YouTube, based on this fundamental essence realized with body and mind through the Energy Flow.
Achievements of martial arts training into the daily life based on the acomplishment of this fundamental essence: Self-Acquirement involve:
Trying to find the essence that becomes the foundation of movement is like searching for something invisible and untouchable, with no visible path. As humans enter this world in a state of chaos and leave in a daze, not understanding this fundamental essence leads to empty words and meaningless achievements.
People often create their own difficulties and exhaust their energy in the process of suffering, which one made it by oneselves under the name of Practice, terming it as "Penance Practice." But this suffering and practicing are self-created hardships that, in the end, might be able to lead to a hazy and take a byway.
The pursuit of "this place is good" or "that place is good" eventually leads to the same result. There's no such thing as a free lunch; everything comes with a price. They promise blessings, health, and happiness, but nothing really changes. Despite endless efforts and strategic maneuvers, conflicts and disputes arise, leading to pointless arguments and fruitless struggles.
In the end, everyone turns away, and the disputes between factions only result in chaos. Turning one's back on everything, unable to understand the root cause of one's misfortune and blaming others incessantly, only brings pain to oneself.
Without a fundamental foundation, individuals succumb to herd psychology, melting into a collective consciousness. There's nothing left even if they melt away; they lose trust in others, and a sense of victimhood takes over. It becomes painful, and some people even decide to live as natural beings by going to the mountains.
No matter how knowledgeable or famous a person may be, without acquiring this fundamental essence, an indescribable hunger always persists. Observing the suffering and illnesses of those close to them, they ponder and contemplate, yet not understanding themselves, they naturally turn to religion and various phenomena.
All these phenomena arise from the "human greed and ignorance" stemming from not understanding the fundamental essence. It has been said that, among all living beings, humans are the most disobedient to the principles conveyed through the Trinity. Hence, humans are considered the most inadequate beings.
3. Discovering the essence of martial arts practice in everyday life and applying it beneficially.
Human life is itself practice, in the practice of martial arts, the essence lies in the flow of energy.
The fundamental principle and substance of this practice are the "energy of nature" (love, or light of nature).
Feeling or observing the flow of this energy, entrusting oneself to the natural energy, or allowing oneself to be enveloped by the energy or light of nature—various expressions can be used.
In any case, it is about finding it oneself, confronting it oneself, experiencing it oneself, realizing it oneself, gaining wisdom oneself, and finding the right path oneself.
This becomes the correct path of practice, leading to the right path in life.
Martial arts practice itself is a part of human life, and since human life is itself a practice for a lifetime, it must be found within oneself.
Hence, the practice is often referred to as the path of enlightenment, or the path of wisdom. However, it is common to fall into unrealistic or mystical interpretations. Interestingly, all scriptures, including Buddhist and Christian texts, explain the methods and importance of acquiring this fundamental understanding. Yet, it remains ironic that despite reading and learning, many do not practice accordingly.
Ultimately, the core of practice in Buddhism is the constant effort to realize who or what moves oneself and the entire world, including oneself. Similarly, all acts approaching the "essence of faith and love," sought by every religion, become the core of each religion.
The basis follows the flow of energy,
and the substance of this energy is explained as the force that moves the world, the love of nature, or the light of nature. In religious terms, it is expressed as the love or faith of God or Buddha. In the end, when one fully grasps the universally accepted fact that everything is interconnected, it can be considered that sectarianism in religions arises from human ignorance and greed.
The reality can not be shown or proven by someone else
but must be found, seen, experienced, realized, and practically applied by oneself.
Otherwise, there is no reason to seek it.
Understanding and realization come through the experience of one's own body and mind.
As with everything, something can only start once it is understood and realized.
However, for many, going through life without knowing until the end came to be normal
even though human creature must realize
In the end, the basic core of martial arts practice in life encompasses
every action (word, thought, and behavior, including the inner functioning of the mind).
No matter how much it is emphasized day and night,
it is never enough. This is why many people emphasize "fundamentals" in everything they do.
The "philosophy of martial arts (philosophy of human life)" is
about making the best effort to discover the essence of one's practice
(word, thought, and behavior - the inner functioning of the mind),
leading to correct thinking through contemplation,
gaining wisdom and realization from it,
and establishing the unique identity of martial arts based on it.
The martial arts I practice not only make myself and my surroundings better
but also contribute to my personal development,
making it the purpose of human life.
That is what is needed in martial arts training for a lifetime.
4) Martial Arts, Religion, and Philosophy - All Aspects of the World Move as One.
Some might wonder why discussions about martial arts always seem to involve bringing up religion and philosophy. This is because the fundamental aspects of human life are all interconnected. By explaining everything under one common principle, the goal is to broaden understanding and foster individual insights through diverse thoughts. Seeking the truth about human existence is the essence of religion, philosophy, and humanities. Using such examples makes it easier to explain and comprehend due to the shared underlying principles.
In religion, philosophy, and any branch of humanities, human beings take precedence.
These disciplines emerged out of necessity, driven by human needs. However, human ignorance and greed have led to the creation of various forms, changes, and distortions within these fields. The fundamental principles, truths, and laws of life were utilized and sometimes exploited to maintain and strengthen one's own privileges. Gradually, these principles became academic, occasionally misused in politics and power, obscuring the essential core.
Thousands of years ago, during the inception of Buddhism and Catholicism, most people were illiterate. Hundreds of years later, the efforts and research of those who learned to read led to the creation of scriptures, inevitably containing some flaws. Therefore, I often emphasize that if one wishes to study numerous scriptures within religion or philosophy, they should first understand the core of human life and the fundamental principles of the world.
Because, in martial arts as well as in religion, philosophy, and other aspects of human life, everything starts with the basics. In other words, since all aspects of the world ultimately converge into one, understanding these fundamentals first makes comprehension easier and propels personal studies towards further development.
The essence of it is exceedingly simple and clear - its core is the truth, the law, and the principle of nature, which can be described as both the alpha and the omega in life.
After grasping this straightforward foundational essence, all the words in scriptures become more easily comprehensible. One can identify incorrect parts as much as one endeviour, think in tune with their era, and avoid straying onto wrong paths or wasting time on frivolous and futile pursuits.
This acquired foundational essence becomes the fundamental basis for self-maturation and development, allowing individuals to enhance their respective religious beliefs. Without this understanding, one is likely to veer off onto the wrong path, unable to think out of the box and away from the path of enlightenment.
2. The Core of Life - Adapting to Trends
1) The Core of Life and Reasons to Love
The saying that one should study until death can be explained in a way similar to the notion that one must earn money until the end. This is because money is necessary even at the time of death, and spiritual, physical, and material aspects are intertwined until one's passing.
Simply put, phrases like frugality, moderation, or humbleness are excellent expressions guiding individuals correctly to their final destination in life, aligning with their own level and situations.
No matter how outstanding and respected a philosopher or religious leader may be,
or how ancient and precious the contents of a book may be,
it is possible to evaluate their level of truth and greatness, based on the most fundamental core.
That is to say, one can lead to one's own judgment,
depending on their own level and understanding as much as one studies.
In other words, it implies the ability to see through numerous rituals and doctrines that are unnecessary, not required, and the many knowledgeable individuals and politicians who push people into illusions and falsehoods. It means not being swayed by them.
No matter which temple is considered good, which church is renowned, and regardless of going to any place known for its positive and vibrant atmosphere, none of them enlightens me. Whether through staying up in prayer, turning something around, memorizing something, engaging in peculiar behaviors, participating in unconventional ceremonies, or even offering lots of money, there is no world where each individual can obtain what they desire or have their wishes come true. It all stems from human greed and ignorance.
In essence,
the core of life is simply to live healthily
- both mentally and physically, eat well, sleep well
- in harmony and balance, get along well with others
- understanding and communication, help each other when possible
- generosity, strive to do the best in every moment
- excellence, and reflect, commit, and be grateful until the last day, and prayer
This approach prevents me from getting hurt, makes my life less uncomfortable and less difficult, and also the idea that things naturally fall into place is rooted in the understanding that I must prepare for it in advance.
Why I should love others, understand and care for them, and contribute to others, it is all for myself in the end.
2. True Enlightenment and Martial Arts Training in the Age of Longevity
Within the framework of religious beliefs,
Making something real, transforming my consciousness into universal consciousness,
or, in some cases, realizing something can be a deception and a trick.
Such examples can be easily found in past history.
So true enlightenment is that we must break away from the framework of existing beliefs,
only then will my current consciousness begin to move and change.
Otherwise, it would be like wandering in an illusion and searching for utopia in a dream.
That's how the world works, but those are by no means my words.
All things coming to life, undergoing change, and bearing fruit, as well as the experiences of birth, life, and death in humans, follow a common principle. That principle is the emergence of energy, going through a process of transformation, and eventually disappearing.
Even within a single breath, it's the same. Breath comes in (emerges), goes through a process (changes), and then goes out (disappears). Many martial artists overlook the fundamental principle mentioned here. If they neglect this basic essence, no matter how much effort they put in throughout their lives, their level remains stagnant.
What is being emphasized here is not to be indoctrinated by dreamlike tales or extraordinary scenarios seen in martial arts movies or dramas, which one may desire. Understanding the fundamental essence of human life is crucial. Elements beyond the basic essence of life are things that can never manifest in reality, and investing time and effort in such pursuits does not benefit oneself.
In essence, the message is that, when leaving this world, it doesn't matter what kind of life report card you carry with you.
If you simply want to maintain a cool form, enjoy it according to your abilities. That's a hobby. However, even in this pursuit, as time passes, one must be well aware of their body's condition and situation. If the fundamental principles mentioned here are overlooked, ultimately your body may become strained or even end up in pain.
In the age of longevity, martial arts training fundamentally involves diligent practice to discipline the mind and body. Regularly monitoring one's health and situation, maintaining a proper conscience and rationality, not being swayed by others, and taking care of one's own mind, being aware of words, thoughts, and actions, are crucial.
In the end, it speaks to the basic essence, and anything that neglects this foundation is nothing more than empty desires and ignorance in hopes for the future.
This foundation goes beyond the refinement of physical techniques. It extends to understanding the impact of movements on energy flow, both in actions and thoughts within daily life. If one gains a deeper understanding of the relationship between movements and organs through energy flow, they may realize its connection to the healing system. Failure to recognize this might be due to people never considering it, even if they've been taught as leaders throughout their lives. It could be a case of hearing about it for the first time or dismissing it due to lack of understanding.
3) Mastery of the Basics - Ki Mu Che (기무체)
I recently published the English version of "Searching for the Forgotten Half in Martial Arts," claiming to reveal the secrets of martial arts in the 21st century for the first time. In reality, these secrets refer to the mastery of the fundamentals, termed as "Self-Acquirement - Body-Magnetization."
Truth, in its essence, is inherently simple, clear, and not complex. However, the truth in the human world is always veiled by human desires and ignorance. Therefore, humans must study to attain proper rational and logical judgment. This process is never-ending due to the insufficiency of knowledge.
Humans are inherently designed this way. There are only two options: a normal person and an abnormal person, a realized person and a less realized person. Martial arts training (Muye, 무예) is essentially spiritual cultivation based on honing body and mind. Since everything in the world is interconnected, one can explore not only religion and philosophy but also politics, economy, and every corner of society through martial arts practice. This is because it is my study for a lifetime, and it is what nurtures me while living.
The Korean version of "Searching for the Forgotten Half in Martial Arts" is already prepared but has not yet been published. Copies of the English version are being delivered worldwide. Today, they are sent to a European country, yesterday to Africa, South America, North America, Australia, and again to Australia. Every day brings enjoyable and rewarding moments.
People who receive the book almost always start asking questions, initiating conversations. Therefore, I am particularly busy online these days. Since I can't travel abroad monthly due to the pandemic, I engage in online interactions. Yet, every day, I feel a sense of accomplishment, conversing with people from many countries since morning.
The various lessons and experiences I gained through Haedong Kumdo are being read by martial artists worldwide. In fact, the content is not limited to martial artists; anyone born in this world can read the book, gain a new perspective on life, understand the principles governing the world, and learn how to apply them in daily life. The book contains many diagrams and explanations, making it accessible to anyone seeking guidance.
This book serves not only martial arts instructors but also many people guiding in religion or philosophy. It is a book that broadens individual perspectives and fulfills the author's sense of mission.
In martial arts training, the basics refer to the flow of energy, the foundation of self-cultivation that comes through long-term training, nurturing both the body and mind. Initially understanding and sensing the flow of energy, over the years, one cultivates a body that moves naturally with energy, a body that moves effortlessly with the natural flow of energy, a body led by the natural energy, a body that studies with the energy of nature, and a body honing through practice guided by the wavelength and love of nature. All these phrases essentially convey the same meaning.
Once you grasp the essence, more expressions become possible, and religious expressions also find validity. The author explains this essence using the term "Ki Mu Che." People who teach in martial arts, religion, or philosophy have often not learned or taught in this manner in the past, even if they have read about it somewhere, unless they have experienced it themselves, they are unlikely to use such terms. As a result, many aspects are simply followed as per the inherited manual, and various aspects are being passed down without questioning.
