올해의 해양 사진작가 대회의 최종 후보작들이 공개되었으며, 출품작 중에는 미술, 야생동물, 모험, 환경보호(영향력), 환경보호(희망), 인간 관계상: 사람과 바다, 청소년 부문의 사진들이 선정되었다. 오셔노그래픽 매거진(해양학 잡지) 주최 측에서 올해 선정된 작품들을 아래와 같이 공유하도록 했다.

The finalist entries in the current Ocean Photographer of the Year competition were just revealed, featuring some of the best Fine Art, Wildlife, Adventure, Conservation (Impact), Conservation (Hope), Human Connection Award: People & Planet Ocean, Young People photographs selected from submissions. Contest organizers at Oceanographic Magazine were kind enough to share some of this year’s selections below.

1. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Portugal by Ben Thouard. “A rough day at Nazaré,” says Thouard. “The wind was blowing from the north which makes the surf tricky. Not many surfers went out, but Justine Dupont and Eric Rebiere, who I was there to shoot, decided to give it a try. It was the end of the afternoon; the light was interesting from the beach instead as from the usual cliff view. It was hard to shoot anything because of the big sets and the saltwater in the air. 모험 부문 최종 후보작. 벤 투아흐가 포르투갈에서 촬영. "포르투갈의 나자레에서 힘든 하루였다"라고 투아흐가 말한다. "북쪽에서 불어오는 바람 때문에 서핑이 까다로웠다. 많은 서퍼들이 나가지 않았지만, 내가 촬영하러 갔던 저스틴 듀퐁과 에릭 레비에르는 도전해 보기로 했다. 오후가 끝나갈 무렵이었는데, 평소 절벽 풍경에서 보는 빛과는 달리 해변에서 보이는 빛이 흥미로웠다. 넓은 세트장과 공중에 떠 있는 바닷물 때문에 아무것도 찍을 수 없었다. 하지만 결국 이 순간이 찾아왔다."

2. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Australia by Gergo Rugli. "Captured on a crisp winter morning at Bronte Beach, this image was the result of a rare alignment," says Rugli. "A powerful southerly swell met strong offshore winds under a soft morning light. I used a slow shutter speed to capture the wave’s motion in a painterly blur while keeping the surfer sharp. This technique allowed me to freeze both chaos and grace in one frame. The title of this image is 'Melchizedek'. referencing the mysterious old king from The Alchemist, who, like this surfer, moved with surprising vitality and purpose." © Gergo Rugli / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 게르고 루글리(헝가리)가 호주에서 촬영. "브론테 비치의 상쾌한 겨울 아침에 촬영한 이 사진은 보기 드문 정렬의 결과이다"라고 루글리는 말한다. "강력한 남쪽 너울이 부드러운 아침 햇살 아래 강한 해안 바람과 만났다. 나는 저속 셔터를 사용하여 파도의 움직임을 그림처럼 흐릿하게 포착하면서도 서퍼의 모습을 선명하게 유지했다. 이 기법을 통해 혼돈과 우아함을 한 프레임에 담아낼 수 있었다. 이 사진의 제목은 '멜기세덱(아브라함의 축복을 빌어준 제사장)'이다. 이 서퍼처럼 놀라운 활력과 목적을 가지고 움직이는 연금술사의 신비로운 늙은 왕을 뜻한다."

🛐🔯멜키체덱(히브리어: מלכי-צדק) 또는 멜기세덱은 구약성서에 등장하는 인물로 살렘(예루살렘의 옛 이름으로 추정)의 왕이자 여호와의 제사장이나, 매우 단편적으로밖에 등장하지 않는다. 고대 히브리어 말키와 체데크라는 단어의 조합으로, 이 멜키체덱이라는 이름에는 '정의의 왕'이라는 뜻도 있다. 또 성체의 기도에서도 멜키체덱이 언급되는 경우가 있다. 세덱이 역사적으로 처음으로 등장하거나 왕의 이름으로 쓰인 것은 기원전 8세기부터 확인된다. 기원전 8-7세기의 신아시리아 제국의 왕 센냐케립의 치세 동안 활동한 아스글론의 왕의 이름은 시드카/세덱(Ṣidqa)이었으며, 기원전 5세기의 기록인 카르케미시/갈그미스 페니키아어 비문(Carchemish Phoenician inscription) 속 키프로스 섬의 라파투스(Lapathus/Lapethus) 지역의 페니키아인 왕의 이름은 세덱멜렉(ṣdqmlk; "세덱은 왕이다"; 멜기세덱은 "나의 왕은 세덱이다"라는 뜻)이었다. 시편 110편에는 "너는 멜기세덱의 서열을 따라 영원한 제사장이라"는 표현이 히브리어 원어로는 "너는 내 명령에 따라 영원한 제사장이라, 멜기세덱이여" 이지만 히브리서 7장에서는 "너는 멜기세덱의 서열을 따라 영원한 제사장이라"를 뜻하는 헬라어로 기록되어 있다.

3. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Mexico by Alex Dawson. "This very unique cave, Yab Yum, is the largest water-filled sinkhole ever documented, close to 100 in diameter and more than 70m deep," says Dawson. "You hit the saltwater at around 15m depth. The stalactites and stalagmites in this enormous space are huge. To reach Yab Yum, you must first drive deep into the jungle on dirt roads, followed by about 40 minutes on off-road trails that are accessible only by large-wheel 4x4 vehicles. Then finally, you need to carry all your diving gear through dense jungle, and after that, it's a 60-minute cave dive to get to this unique location." © Alex Dawson / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 알렉스 도슨(스웨덴)이 멕시코에서 촬영. 도슨은 "이 매우 독특한 동굴인 야브 윰은 지금까지 기록된 가장 큰 물로 가득 찬 싱크홀로, 지름이 거의 100m에 달하고 깊이가 70m가 넘는다."라고 말한다. 🚣기록된 가장 큰 규모의 물로 가득 찬 싱크홀은 멕시코 플라야 델 카르멘과 툴룸 근처에 위치한 야브 윰(Yab Yum)이다. 이 싱크홀은 거대한 크기와 독특한 수중 동굴 시스템으로 유명하다. 야브 윰은 지름이 약 100m이고 깊이는 70m가 넘는다. 밀림 깊숙한 곳에 위치해 있어 비포장도로와 오프로드 트레일을 따라 운전한 후 40분 동안 하이킹을 하고 60분 동안 동굴 다이빙을 해야 한다. 싱크홀은 인상적인 종유석과 석순을 자랑하며, 다이빙은 좁은 통로와 약간의 제한을 통과한 후 메인 챔버에 도달하는 것을 포함한다. 다이버들은 싱크홀의 모양과 크기 때문에 마치 우주에 있는 듯한 느낌을 받으며 이 경험을 매우 독특하다고 묘사한다. 야브 윰은 사카툼과 도 동굴 사이에 위치한 더 큰 엘 펜테 동굴계의 일부이다. 이 동굴계는 수심이 얕은 것으로 유명하여, 이러한 다이빙은 특별한 경험을 선사한다. 고프로를 비롯한 여러 탐험가들이 싱크홀을 탐사하고 기록했으며, 바닥에서 빙하기 곰의 유해를 발견했다.

4. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in French Polynesia by Álvaro Herrero. "A freediver, accompanied by two humpback whales in French Polynesia, maintains a respectful and prudent distance," says Herrero. "Recently, social media has been flooded with images of people getting very close to wildlife, including whales, often captured without proper knowledge, respect, or regard for safety and animal welfare. Many of these encounters are hastily staged or driven by the desire for striking photos. I share this photograph to promote a message of respect and responsible observation. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining safe distances and acting ethically." © Álvaro Herrero / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 알바로 에레로(스페인)이 프랑스령 폴리네시아에서 촬영. "프랑스령 폴리네시아에서 혹등고래 두 마리와 함께 있는 프리다이버가 존중과 신중한 거리를 유지하고 있다"라고 에레로는 말한다. "최근 소셜미디어에는 고래를 포함한 야생동물에 매우 가까이 접근하는 사람들의 사진이 넘쳐나고 있는데, 이러한 사진들은 종종 적절한 지식, 존중, 또는 안전과 동물 복지에 대한 고려 없이 촬영된다. 이러한 만남의 상당수는 성급하게 연출되거나 인상적인 사진을 찍고자 하는 욕망에 의해 이루어진다. 나는 존중과 책임감 있는 관찰의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 이 사진을 공유한다. 이 사진은 안전한 거리를 유지하고 윤리적으로 행동하는 것의 중요성을 강조한다."

5. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Iceland by Byron Conroy. "Silfra fissure is a ‘visibility wonderland’," says Conroy. "It is the ultimate wide angle ambient light shooting destination. Visibility extends to more than 100 metres and the fissure looks completely different depending on the time of day and the time of year. My favourite time is spring when we get angled light and the first growth of the green algae." © Byron Conroy / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 바이런 콘로이(영국)가 아이슬란드에서 촬영. "실프라 균열(龜裂)는 '가시성 원더랜드'이다"라고 콘로이가 말한다. "광각 주변광 촬영의 최적지이다. 가시거리는 100m 이상이며, 시간대와 계절에 따라 균열(龜裂)의 모습이 완전히 다르다. 내가 가장 좋아하는 시기는 각도에 따라 빛이 들어오고 녹조류가 처음 자라는 봄이다."

🌋실프라(Silfra, 아이슬란드어 실브라)는 북아메리카판과 유라시아판의 발산형 지각 경계인 대서양 중앙 해령에 형성된 균열로, 아이슬란드 싱벨리르 국립공원 내 싱발라바튼 호수에 위치해 있다. 이 계곡과 실브라 자체는 유라시아판과 북아메리카판의 발산적 지각 이동에 의해 형성되었다. 판은 매년 약 2cm(0.79인치)씩 이동하며 판과 그 위의 지구 질량 사이에 긴장을 형성한다. 이러한 긴장은 약 10년 간격으로 주기적으로 발생하는 대지진을 통해 완화되며, 이로 인해 싱벨리르 계곡에 균열이 형성된다. 실브라는 Þingvallavatn 호수 가장자리에 위치하며, 이러한 균열(龜裂) 중 가장 크고 깊은 곳 중 하나이다. 실브라 균열은 주요 대수층을 가로지르며, 이 대수층은 바닥의 여러 샘에 물을 공급한다. 넓어지는 균열 속으로 떨어지는 바위와 암석은 균열 내에 동굴을 형성했다.

6. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Mexico by Daan Verhoeven. "Freediver Surya Lecona Moctezuma dives down in between light beams in a Mexican cenote," says Verhoeven. "I was looking for the contrast between not just the light and dark areas, but the sudden appearance of linear geometry in a natural setting, so I asked Surya to dive right in the middle of the beams. 모험 부문 최종 후보작. 단 버호벤(네덜란드)이 멕시코에서 촬영. "프리다이버 수리야 레코나 목테수마(멕시코)가 멕시코 세노테에서 광선 사이로 다이빙하고 있다"라고 버호벤이 말한다. "나는 밝은 부분과 어두운 부분 사이의 대비뿐만 아니라 자연환경에서 갑자기 나타나는 선형 기하학의 모습을 찾고 있었다. 그래서 수리야에게 광선의 한가운데로 뛰어들라고 요청했다. 나는 그녀를 따라 다이빙하여 바로 위에 위치했다."

7. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in French Polynesia by Joaquin Fregoni. "I took this photo in Teahupo’o on a day when the swell was huge," says Fregoni. "I was in Tahiti and saw the forecast, so I decided to head down and shoot. This shot, of a surfer launching into the air right after finishing a massive wave, turned out to be one of my favorites from that day. The energy, the timing, and the backdrop all came together perfectly." © Daan Verhoeven / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 호아킨 프레고니(아르헨티나)이 프랑스령 폴리네시아에서 촬영. 프레고니는 "이 사진은 파도가 매우 높았던 날 테아후포오에서 찍었다"라고 말한다. "타히티에 있었는데 예보를 보고 바로 촬영하기로 했다. 거대한 파도를 넘은 직후 공중으로 뛰어오르는 서퍼의 모습이 담긴 이 사진은 그날 내가 가장 좋아하는 사진 중 하나였다. 에너지, 타이밍, 배경이 모두 완벽하게 어우러졌다."

8. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Hawai'i by Karim Iliya. "This photo shows a windsurfer riding a wave at Ho’okipa Beach in Maui, a spot famous for its big waves and strong winds," says Iliya. "Taken from above with a drone, the image offers a unique look at a sport most people rarely get to see up close. The photo was captured during the American Windsurfing Tour competition, where some of the best windsurfers in the world come to test their skills. From this aerial view, you can really feel the power of the ocean and the connection between the rider, the wave, and the wind driving it all forward." © Karim Iliya / Ocean Photographer of the Year

9. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in French Polynesia by Marc Lenfant. "At the mythical Teahupo’o, a wave sculpted by the power of the ocean forms a perfect tube framing the surfer," says Lenfant. "The surfer’s head is positioned exactly in the centre, creating a striking illusion: the curve of the wave looks like a giant eye, with the surfer becoming its iris. In this fleeting moment of harmony, the surfer seems to merge with this natural work of art." © Marc Lenfant / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 마흑 렁퐁(미국)이 프랑스령 폴리네시아에서 촬영. "신화 속 테아후포오에서 바다의 힘으로 빚어진 파도가 서퍼를 감싸는 완벽한 튜브를 형성한다."라고 랑팡은 말한다. "서퍼의 머리는 정중앙에 위치하여 놀라운 환상을 만들어낸다. 파도의 곡선은 거대한 눈처럼 보이고, 서퍼는 그 눈의 홍채가 된다. 이 찰나의 조화 속에서 서퍼는 마치 이 자연의 예술작품과 하나가 되는 듯하다."

10. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Dominica by Romain Barats. "I've been fond of whales since my childhood, so I was really excited to get the opportunity to swim with sperm whales for the first time in my life," says Barats. "I was extremely lucky on my first day at sea. We saw 15 whales socialising for 45 minutes or so. The sea was rough but when you get to see something like that you quickly forget the conditions. There were three of us in the water, spread out due to the action. The whales began to move out when I suddenly saw my buddy freediving from afar. I managed to get a shot of him surrounded by whales." © Romain Barats / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 로만 바하(프랑스)가 도미니카에서 촬영. "어린 시절부터 고래를 좋아해서 생애 처음으로 향유고래와 함께 수영할 기회를 얻게 되어 정말 기뻤다"라고 바하는 말한다. "바다에서 보낸 첫날은 정말 운이 좋았다. 15마리의 고래가 45분 정도 어울려 노는 모습을 봤다. 바다는 거칠었지만 그런 모습을 보면 금세 그 상황을 잊어버리게 된다. 우리는 3명이 물속에 있었고, 움직임 때문에 흩어져 있었다. 그런데 갑자기 멀리서 내 친구가 프리다이빙하는 것을 보자 고래들이 움직이기 시작했다. 나는 그 친구가 고래들에게 둘러싸여 있는 모습을 사진에 담을 수 있었다."

11. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Mexico by Jeong Yul Park. "This location is a cenote in Cancun," says Yul Park. "I wanted to capture the entire view from the entrance in a single frame, so I went all the way to the back of the cenote and positioned myself for the shot. 모험 부문 최종 후보작. 박정율(한국)이 멕시코에서 촬영. "이곳은 칸쿤의 세노테이다"라고 박정율은 말한다. "입구에서 보이는 풍경을 한 프레임에 담고 싶어서 세노테 뒤쪽까지 가서 촬영 위치를 잡았다. 다른 다이버가 없는 곳에서 사진을 찍기 위해 오랫동안 기다렸다."

📷️루루카(RURUKA)라는 예명으로 활동하는 박정열은 바다에 대한 깊은 사랑과 존경을 품은 한국 출신의 수중 사진작가이다. 광각과 매크로 사진 모두를 전문으로 하는 루루카는 바다의 아름다움을 다양한 형태로 포착하기 위해 세계 곳곳을 누빈다. 호기심과 창의력을 바탕으로 루루카는 끊임없이 새로운 모험과 장소를 찾아 예술적 비전을 확장한다. 그의 작품은 바다 세계와의 깊은 유대감과 강렬하고 몰입적인 이미지를 통해 그 경이로움을 공유하고자 하는 그의 헌신을 보여준다.

12. Finalist, Adventure. Photographed in Australia by Kim Feast. Professional surfer Noa Deane flies through a rainbow at Huzzas surf break, Western Australia. “This image is baffling,” says Feast. “It was created at sunset. I had to track the surfer coming at me and then lose him for a moment as he prepared to launch. I had to turn blindly and shoot, predicting that he would fly through my frame. The resulting rainbow I was not prepared for – it’s something I’ve never seen before and not been able to replicate since.” © Kim Feast / Ocean Photographer of the Year

모험 부문 최종 후보작. 킴 피스트(호주)가 호주에서 촬영. 프로 서퍼 노아 딘이 서호주 후자스 서프 브레이크에서 무지개 위를 날고 있다. "이 사진은 정말 당혹스럽다"라고 피스트는 말한다. "해 질 무렵에 찍은 사진이다. 나를 향해 오는 서퍼를 추적하다가 그가 뛰어들 준비를 하는 순간 그를 놓쳐야 했다. 서퍼가 내 프레임을 뚫고 지나갈 것이라고 예상하고 무작정 돌아서서 촬영해야 했다. 그 결과 나타난 무지개는 전혀 예상치 못한 것이었다. 전에 본 적도 없고, 그 이후로 재현할 수도 없었다."
