The Korean currency weakened markedly against the U.S. dollar Tuesday to reach the lowest level in over 16 years amid deepening concerns about the impact of the Donald Trump administration's sweeping tariff plan on the economy.

도널드 트럼프 행정부의 전면적인 관세 계획이 경제에 미칠 영향에 대한 우려가 심화되면서 화요일 한국통화는 미국달러 대비 현저하게 약세를 보이며 16년 만에 최저 수준에 도달했다.

The Korean won was quoted at 1,473.2 won against the greenback at 3:30 p.m., down 5.4 won from the previous session.

오후 3시 30분에 원화는 전 세션보다 5.4원 하락한 1,473.2원에 거래되었다.

The reading marks the lowest level since March 13, 2009, when the won was quoted at 1,483.5 won as the country was grappling with the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

이 수치는 글로벌 금융 위기의 여파로 어려움을 겪고 있던 2009년 3월 13일 원화가 1,483.5원에 거래된 이후 가장 낮은 수준이다.

The won opened at 1,471.0 won, down 3.2 won from the previous session, and had dipped to as low as 1,473.75 won during intraday trading.

원화는 전 세션보다 3.2원 하락한 1,471.0원에 개장했으며 장중 거래에서 1,473.75원까지 떨어졌다.

The local currency has been showing large fluctuations since U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans last week to impose "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from most of the world, including 25 percent duties on Korean goods.

지난주 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 한국 상품에 대한 25% 관세를 포함해 대부분의 세계 수입품에 '상호' 관세를 부과할 계획을 발표한 이후 국내 통화는 큰 변동을 보이고 있다.

The country-specific tariffs are set to take effect Wednesday (U.S. time), while a 10 percent "baseline" tariff on foreign imports went into force Saturday.

국가별 관세는 수요일(미국 시간)에 발효될 예정이며, 외국 수입품에 대한 10%의 '기준선' 관세는 토요일에 발효될 예정이다.

On Monday, Trump also warned of additional 50 percent tariffs on China if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory 34 percent tariffs against his country, while noting tariff negotiations with other countries will kick off "immediately."

The local currency has stayed near the 1,450 won level since December amid the U.S. tariff warnings and a domestic political crisis sparked by then President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law imposition on Dec. 3.

"Volatility in the country's financial and foreign exchange markets is expected to persist. The government will maintain close monitoring of the situation with heightened vigilance," the finance ministry said in a release. (Yonhap)
