The Korean won is likely to undergo moderate fluctuation relative to the U.S. dollar, influenced by mixed market expectations over talks by foreign exchange (FX) authorities of Korea and the U.S., market watchers said Friday.

시장전문가들은 금요일 한국과 미국의 외환 당국 회담에 대한 시장의 엇갈린 기대감에 영향을 받아 원화가 미국 달러에 비해 완만한 변동을 겪을 가능성이 높다고 말했다.

The Korean currency registered sharp gains in intraday and overnight highs over the past few days, buoyed by market expectations that Korea will allow for a stronger won at the request of the world’s largest economy.

한국통화는 세계 최대 경제대국의 요청에 따라 원화강세를 허용할 것이라는 시장의 기대감에 힘입어 지난 며칠 동안 장중 및 밤사이 최고치에서 큰 폭의 상승세를 기록했다.

The won's trajectory included a slight weakness after Bloomberg reported that U.S. officials “seeking to negotiate trade deals around the world are not working to include currency policy pledges in the agreements.”

블룸버그가 "전 세계 무역 협정을 협상하려는 미국 관리들이 협정에 통화 정책 공약을 포함시키기 위해 노력하지 않고 있다"고 보도한 후 원화의 궤적에는 약간의 약세가 포함되었다.

However, many market participants focused more on the fact that the discussions are happening at all, rather than whether currency issues are officially on the agenda.

According to the FX market, the Korean currency strengthened to an intraday high of 1,391.5 won against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday.

This was a further gain from the opening price of 1,410.9 won, 9.3 won stronger from the previous session.

The currency slid back to the 1,400-level in the afternoon but gained to close at 1,394.5 won, 25.7 won stronger than the previous session.

The intraday fluctuation was 19.4 won. Over the past 10 trading sessions, the won gain came to 48.1 won against the U.S. currency.

During overnight trading, it soared to 1,390.8 after a news report that FX authorities from Korea and the U.S. had a sit-down for currency meetings last week.

They were Korea's deputy finance minister Choi Ji-young and Assistant Secretary for International Finance at the U.S. Treasury, Robert Kaproth.

They met on May 5, according to a report by Reuters, on the sidelines of the 58th Asian Development Bank annual meeting in Milan, Italy.

The market has and will continue to price in the U.S. pressure for won appreciation, according to a Shinhan Bank report.

신한은행 보고서에 따르면, 시장은 미국의 원화 강세 압력으로 인해 가격이 형성되었으며 앞으로도 계속될 것이다.

“The government accepting the demands is a highly probable scenario. The Trump administration is apparently favoring a weaker dollar, and is likely to pressure Korea to let its currency gain,” Shinhan Bank researcher So Jae-yong said.

"정부가 요구를 수용하는 것은 매우 가능성이 높은 시나리오이다. 트럼프 행정부는 달러약세를 선호하는 것으로 보이며, 한국이 환율 상승을 허용하도록 압력을 가할 가능성이 높다."라고 신한은행의 소재용 연구원은 말했다.

Still, it remains difficult to forecast the course of the won, despite considerable dollar offloading by foreign investors, according to NH Securities researcher Wie Jae-hyun.

“Foreign investors sold dollars en masse,” he said. “Despite the U.S. announcement, the market is still betting on a stronger Korean won, pushing up the value of the Korean currency to the degree that is hard to justify given overall dollar weakness.”
