U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that North Korea was "sort of a nuclear power" as he left the United States for Asia on a trip that could include a meeting with Pyongyang's leader, Kim Jong-un.

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 금요일, 김정은 북한 국무위원장과의 회담을 포함한 아시아 순방을 위해 미국을 떠나면서 북한을 "핵보유국"으로 규정했다고 밝혔다.

Asked aboard Air Force One whether he was open to North Korea's demand to be recognised as a nuclear state as a precondition for dialogue with Washington, Trump replied: "Well, I think they are sort of a nuclear power.

"When you say they have to be recognized as a nuclear power, well, they got a lot of nuclear weapons, I'll say that."

Trump is expected in South Korea, Wednesday, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting.

트럼프 대통령은 수요일 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의 참석을 위해 한국을 방문할 예정이다.

U.S. media have previously reported officials from his administration have privately discussed setting up a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim, with whom he last held talks in 2019.

미국 언론은 이전에 트럼프 행정부 관계자들이 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 북한 국무위원장의 회담 개최를 비공개적으로 논의했다고 보도했다. 김 위원장과 트럼프 대통령은 2019년 이후 마지막으로 회담을 가졌다.

Trump has said he hopes to meet Kim again — possibly this year.

Kim said last month he had "fond memories" of Trump and was open to talks if the United States dropped its "delusional" demand that Pyongyang give up its nuclear weapons.

On Friday, South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said he believed there was a "considerable" chance that Trump would meet Kim during his visit to the peninsula next week.

While no official announcements of the duo's meeting have been made, South Korea and the United Nations Command halted tours of the Joint Security Area (JSA) from late October to early November.

Kim met Trump three times for high-profile summits during the U.S. leader's first term.

김정은 위원장은 트럼프 대통령의 첫 임기 동안 고위급 정상회담을 위해 세 차례 트럼프 대통령과 만났다.

The duo's last and impromptu meeting at Panmunjom was hastily arranged after Trump extended an invitation to Kim on Twitter a day prior.

판문점에서 두 사람의 마지막 즉흥적인 만남은 트럼프 대통령이 전날 트위터를 통해 김정은 위원장에게 초청장을 보낸 후 급하게 마련된 자리였다.

That event saw the two leaders shake hands over the concrete slabs dividing North and South before Trump walked a few paces into Pyongyang's territory — becoming the first U.S. president ever to set foot on North Korean soil.

이 행사에서 두 정상은 남북을 가르는 콘크리트 블록 위에서 악수를 나눈 후 트럼프 대통령이 평양 영토로 몇 걸음 들어가 북한 땅을 밟은 최초의 미국 대통령이 되었다.

But talks eventually collapsed over just how much of its nuclear arsenal the North was willing to give up and what Pyongyang would get in return.

Since then, North Korea has repeatedly declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear state.
