♣ 흰돌고래(Delphinapterus leucas, white whale)는 북극과 그 주변 지역에 서식하는 고래이다. 일각고래와 함께 외뿔고래과의 종 중의 하나이다. "벌루가고래(beluga whale)" 또는 간단히 "벌루가(beluga)"라고도 한다. 몸 길이는 최고 5.5m에 이르며 하얀 몸과 멜론 같이 생긴 머리를 가지고 있어서 "멜론헤드(melonhead)"라고 불리기도 한다. 현재 22종의 흰돌고래가 알려져있다.

흰돌고래(beluga)는 1776년 피에타 지몬 팔라스(Peter Simon Pallas, 독일, 1741 – 1811)에 의해 처음 기술되었다. 이빨고래의 일부인 모노돈과(Monodontidae)에 속한다. 이라와디돌고래(Irrawaddy dolphin)는 한때 같은 과로 분류되었지만, 최근의 유전적 증거들은 이들이 참돌고래과(Delphinidae)에 속한다는 것을 시사한다. 일각돌고래는 흰돌고래 외에 모노돈과에 속하는 유일한 다른 종이다. 이 두 종(일각돌고래와 흰돌고래) 사이에 교배가 가능하다는 가설을 뒷받침하는 중간의 특성을 가진 두개골이 발견되었다.

학명(Delphinapterus leucas)은 ‘지느러미가 없는 돌고래’를 의미하며, 종명은 ‘흰색’을 의미한다. 멸종위기종 목록에는 ‘벌루가(beluga)’와 ‘흰고래(white whale)’가 모두 일반 이름으로 되어있지만, 전자인 ‘벌루가’가 현재 더 인기가 있다. 러시아어로 벌루가(белуга; 빌루가)라는 이름은 관련이 없는 어류인 빌루가 철갑상어를 의미한다.
고래는 ‘바다 카나리아’라고 불리기도 하는데, 그 이유는 높은 음의 끽끽거리는 소리, 휘파람 소리 때문이다. 일본의 한 연구원은 벌루가에게 세개의 다른 물체를 식별하기 위해 이러한 소리를 사용함으로써 ‘말하기’를 가르쳤다고 주장하며, 언젠가 인간이 바다 포유류와 효과적으로 의사소통 할 수 있을 것이라는 희망을 주었다.
