올해는 종종 보기 어렵거나 불편할 수 있는 뉴스 기사와 사진으로 가득 찬 한 해였다. 나는 "올해의 뉴스 사진"을 모아서 지난 12개월 동안의 희망찬 이미지를 에세이로 쓰는 것을 매년 전통으로 만들었으며, 그것은 우리 주변 세계에 존재하는 풍부한 즐거움과 친절함을 찾아내고 인식하려는 노력이다. 다음은 개인의 승리, 가족과 친구들의 놀이, 사랑과 연민의 표현, 일하는 자원봉사자, 도움이 필요한 사람들을 돕는 일, 작고 즐거운 순간들의 지난 한 해의 모습이다.

This year has been another filled with news stories and photos that can often be difficult or disturbing to view. I’ve made it an annual tradition, after rounding up the “news photos of the year,” to compose an essay of uplifting images from the past 12 months—an effort to seek out and recognize some of the abundant joy and kindness present in the world around us. The following are images from the past year of personal victories, families and friends at play, expressions of love and compassion, volunteers at work, assistance being given to those in need, and small and pleasant moments.
