Palm Sunday

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord, Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate the Palm Sunday. On this day, People of Jerusalem, every woman, man and child came out to the street and welcomed Jesus in to the City. Along with them we also have joyfully raised our voices and sang hosanna to the son of David. Yet Jesus’ entry was quite different, humble and on a donkey’s back. As we begin Holy Week we see contradictions at work between triumph and tragedy, and between rejoicing and rejection. We begin on a keynote of celebration with blessed palms and procession, in the reading of the Passion the dominant note is suffering.

For Jesus "to love" means "to lower oneself." He left his divine condition and became man, living with the poorest. This is the theme we find in todays liturgy of the word. We often say that we believe in him. What does this mean? To have faith, means to have the courage to follow him even if it involves giving up our life. Let us ask Gods pardon and forgivness when we have failed to understand his teaching.

Through todays liturgical word we come to know  two kinds of proccssion or  parades – the first,  Jesus triumph entry in to Jerusalem. Here Jesus being acclaimed as a political saviour. “Hosanna!” shouted the people lining the streets of Jerusalem. Literally, “Save us!” Save us, they meant, from the Roman oppressor. Like the parade to vote in a new leader.

Jesus did come to save them, of course, but not from the Romans. Over the next few days, the crowd would come to realize that Jesus wasn’t on board with their agenda. The same people who shouted “Hosanna!” will shout “Crucify him!”

The second,  A parade  or proccession is  from out of Jerusalem  city, on friday  which looked like disgrace.  A man carrying his cross, crowned with thorns, mocked and tortured. And about to be killed. Like the parade to a gravyard, our last parade.

Jesus seemed to fear the first parad more than the second. He had no wish for power, kingship.  He comes in his true colours in the second -  the one who loved onto death.  Jesus’ first parade as the political leader, the hope that the Son of David would lead them against the Romans.  But the second parade– the real son of David, the saviour from evil, who saves us.

He had all sorts of followers –those who really loved him, some those denide him and some  who betried him and some who lasted till the end, like his mother, and a few of the followers. The others were at a distance, they would come back, and would follow later to the end.

Our hope is to be in that second parade. Maybe we shouldn’t take the palms home on Palm Sunday!  They are not the real thing.  Palms are for waving in triumph.  The cross is more true. The cross is his love, and as we follow in this  parade – the way of the cross – we show  our willingness to console him in love to the end.

It’s a week of giving, that’s why it’s holy.  The physical pain does not make it holy itself ; it’s a holy week simply because a man like us, and one of the Trinity, gave his life, in love.

주님 수난 성지 주일

주님의 이름으로 오시는분, 임금님은 복되시어라. 하늘에 평화, 지극히 높은 곳에 영광!

사랑하는 형제 자매 여러분, 오늘은 주님 수난 성지 주일 입니다.
이날에는 예루살렘의 모든 사람들, 여자, 남자, 아이 할 것 없이 모두가 거리로 나와 예수님을 맞이 했습니다.
그들과 함께 우리도 기쁨으로 목소리를 높여 다윗의 아들에게 호산나를 불렀습니다.
그러나 예수님은 나귀 등에 올라 볼품없는 겸손한 모습으로 예루살렘으로 들어가십니다.

성주간을 맞이하여 우리는 승리와 슬픈 비극, 기쁨과 굴욕 사이에 모순이 존재하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
우리는 성지 축복과 행렬을 거행하며 축하의 노래로 시작하지만, 주님의 수난기를 들으며 주님의 수난과 죽음의 고통을 미리 묵상하며 준비해야 합니다.

예수님께서 ‘사랑한다’는 것은 ‘자신을 낮추는 것’을 의미합니다.
그분은 신성한 신분을 버리고 사람이 되시어 가장 가난한 사람들과 함께 사셨습니다.
이것이 오늘 말씀 전례에서 우리가 발견해야 할 주제입니다.

우리는 종종 그분을 믿는다고 말합니다. 그 믿음은 무엇을 의미할까요?
믿음을 갖는다는 것은,
우리의 삶을 포기하더라도 그분을 따르는 용기를 갖는다는 것을 의미 합니다.
우리가 하느님의 가르침을 이해하지 못할 때, 우리는 하느님께 용서와 자비를 구해야 합니다.

오늘의 복음을 통해 우리는 두 종류의 행렬을 보게 됩니다.

첫번째 행렬에는 예수님께서 예루살렘으로 승리의 입성을 하시는 모습입니다.
예루살렘의 거리에 늘어선 군중들은 ‘호산나’를 외쳤고 예수님은 그 시대의 구세주로 군중들에게 칭송을 받으셨습니다.
그들의 외침은, 말 그대로 ‘구해 주세요!’ 로마인들의 박해에서 구해 달라는 뜻이었습니다.
마치 새로운 지도자를 선출하기 위해 투표하는 행렬 같았습니다.
물론 예수님은 그들을 구하러 오셨지만, 로마인들로부터 구하진 못했습니다.
며칠 후, 군중들은 예수님이 자신들의 바램에 참여하지 않으셨다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
‘호산나’를 외쳤던 사람들은 곧 ‘그를 십자가에 못 박아라!’ 라고 외칠 것입니다.

두번째 행렬로, 금요일 예루살렘 거리에는 수치스러운 행렬이 있었습니다.
한 남자가 가시관을 쓰고 십자가를 지며, 온갖 조롱과 고문을 당했고 곧 죽음을 맞이하게 될것 입니다. 그 행렬은 마치 묘지로 향하는 것 같습니다. 우리의 마지막도 이와 같을 것입니다.
예수님은 권력과 왕위에 대한 욕망이 없으셨고 죽음까지도 사랑하는 사람인 자신의 본성을 두번째 행렬에서 드러내십니다.

첫번째 행렬에서의 예수님은 처음 군중 앞에 나선 다윗의 아들이 로마인들에 맞서 백성들을 이끌어 주기 바라는 희망이었다면,
두번째 행렬에서의 예수님은 악으로부터 구원받은 다윗의 진짜 아들, 우리를 구원해 주시는 분, 구원자였습니다.

예수님에게는 그를 진심으로 사랑하는 이들, 그를 부정하는 이들, 배신하는 이들, 그의 어머니 처럼 끝까지 참아낸 이들, 그 외 다양한 부류의 따르는 이들이 있었습니다.
또, 멀리 떨어져 있는 다른 사람들도 있었지만, 결국 돌아와 나중에는 끝까지 예수님을 따라갔습니다.

우리의 희망은 두번째 행렬에 참여하는 것입니다.
주님 수난 성지 주일에, 성지 가지를 집으로 가져가는 것은 여러분에게 어떤 의미입니까?
그것들은 진짜가 아닙니다. 그것은 단지 승리를 위해 흔드는 것입니다.
십자가가 진짜 입니다! 십자가는 예수님의 사랑이고, 우리는 그 십자가의 길을 끝까지 따라가며,
그분을 사랑하고 위로하려는 우리의 의지를 보여 드려야 합니다.

이번주는 베풀어야 하는 성스러운 주간입니다.

육체적 고통이 거룩하게 만드는 것은 아닙니다. 그 주간이 거룩한 것은, 우리와 같은 사람, 삼위일체 중 한 분이신 예수님께서
사랑으로 자신의 목숨을 바쳤기 때문입니다.
