문학작품 속의 영어표현 (1) : Of Mice and Men(생쥐와 인간) 미국의 소설가 죤 스타인벡(John Steinbeck)은 미국 대공황(The Great Depression)시대를 전후한 미국 노동자들의 삶의 애환을 다룬 소설 The Grapes of Wrath(분노의 포도)로 노벨문학상을 받은 대표적인 작가이다. 그의 작품 Of Mice and Men(생쥐와 인간)은 미국 캘리포니아 주의 농장들을 전전하면서 자기가 직접 경작할 땅을 갈구하는 이주노동자(Migrant Laborer)들의 삶을 다루고 있다. 그런데, 이 짧은 단편소설의 첫 부분은 작품의 무대가 되는 캘리포니아 주의 살리나스강(Salinas River) 지역을 간결하고 시적인 문장들을 통해 대단히 시각적이고도 역동적으로 묘사하고 있다.
