A goatherd, driving his goats from their pasture in the evening, found some wild goats mingled among his own.
The next day it snowed very hard, so he could not take the herd to their usual feeding places. He kept the wild goats with his own. He gave his own goats just enough food to keep them alive, but fed the strangers more aboundtly in the hope that they would stay with him,k and he could make them his own.
When the thick blanket of snow finally melted, he led them all out to feed. Then the wild goats ran away as fast as they could to the mountains.
The goatherd was angry at them for being ungrateful after he had taken them in, and fed them during the snowstorm. He had taken more care of them than of his own herd.
One of the wild goats, turning about, said to him, This is the only reason why we are so cautious. You treated us better than the goats you have had so long. It is plain that if others came after us, you would prefer them to us the same way.
