A Prayer by St. Thomas More

Give me the grace, Good Lord

선하신 주여, 당신의 은혜를 구합니다.

To set the world at naught. To set the mind firmly on You and not to hang upon the words of men's mouths.

이 세상이 제게 아무 것도 아닌 것이 되게 하시고, 제 마음을 당신께 고정시켜, 사람의 입으로부터 나오는 말들로부터 얽매이지 않게 하소서

To be content to be solitary. Not to long for worldly pleasures. Little by little utterly to cast off the world and rid my mind of all its business.

저의 고독을 만족하게 하소서. 세상이 주는 기쁨을 찾지 않게 하소서. 세상이 주는 가치를 멀리 하게 하시고, 세상사람들로부터 인정받고 싶어하는 욕구가 없게 하소서.

Not to long to hear of earthly things, but that the hearing of worldly fancies may be displeasing to me.

땅에서 일어나는 일을 들으려고 갈구하는 것이 아니라, 세상이 주는 거짓 환상들이 정말로 불쾌한 일이 되게 하소서.

Gladly to be thinking of God, piteously to call for His help. To lean into the comfort of God. Busily to labor to love Him.

기쁜 마음으로 하나님만을 생각할 수 있게 하시고, 신실한 마음으로 당신 도움을 구할 수 있게 하소서. 항상 주님의 위로에 의지할 수 있게 하시고, 당신에 향한 사랑울 위해 보다 더 이게 하소서.

To know my own vileness and wretchedness. To humble myself under the mighty hand of God. To bewail my sins and, for the purging of them, patiently to suffer adversity.

내 안에 있는 비천함과 거짓됨을 알게 하소서. 당신의 강한 능력 아래 더욱 겸손할 수 있게 하소서. 내 안의 죄를 슬퍼하게 하시고, 인내심으로 역경을 견디면서 그 죄악을 깨끗이 어낼 수 있게 하소서.,

Gladly to bear my purgatory here. To be joyful in tribulations. To walk the narrow way that leads to life.

지금 이 감옥에서 기쁜 마음으로 나의 죄사함을 감당할 수 있게 하시고, 시련을 기뻐하게 사시며, 생명의 좁은 길로 힘있게 나아갈 수 있게 하소서.

To have the last thing in remembrance. To have ever before my eyes my death that is ever at hand. To make death no stranger to me. To foresee and consider the everlasting fire of Hell. To pray for pardon before the judge comes.

지난 일들을 항상 기억하게 하소서. 또 눈 앞에 다가온 죽음을 기꺼이 받아드릴 수 있게 하소서. 죽음이 결코 낯설지 않게 하소서. 영원한 지옥불을 항상 생각하게 하시고, 심판을 앞두고 주님의 용서를 간구할 수 있게 하소서.

To have continually in mind the passion that Christ suffered for me. For His benefits unceasingly to give Him thanks.

저를 위해 그리스도께서 받으신 고난을 항상 생각하게 하소서. 그리스도께서 저에게 베푸신 그 은혜에 대해 끊임없이 감사하게 하소서.

To buy the time again that I have lost. To abstain from vain conversations. To shun foolish mirth and gladness. To cut off unnecessary recreations.

이전에 제가 허송세월했던 시간들을 다시 회복할 수 있게 하소서. 헛된 잡담을 자제하게 하시고, 세상이 주는 어리석은 즐거움과 기쁨으로부터 벗어나게 하시며, 쓸데없이 보내고 있는 휴식을 단호히 거부하게 하소서.

Of worldly substance, friends, liberty, life and all, to set the loss at naught, for the winning of Christ.

세상으로부터 오는 가치들, 친구, 자유, 생명 등을 포함한 모든 것들을 잃는다 해도 그 모든 일들이 아마 것도 아닌 일이 되게 하소서. 오로지 그리스도의 승리를 향해 달려가게 하소서.

To think my worst enemies my best friends, for the brethren of Joseph could never have done him so much good with their love and favor as they did him with their malice and hatred.

악한 일을 해온 적들이 가장 귀중한 친구들임을 알게 하소서. 시기와 증오감으로 요셉을 대한 요셉의 형제들이 아니라 사랑과 친절로 더 많은 선을 행할 수 있는 요셉과 같은 사람이 되기를 바랍니다.

These minds are more to be desired of every man than all the treasures of all the princes and kings, Christian and heathen, were it gathered and laid together all in one heap.

왕과 귀족들을 비롯 세상의 모든 사람들이 이런 마음을 찾게 하소서. 이런 마음으로 그리스도인과 비그리스도인 모두 한데 모여 하나가 될 수 있게 하소서.
