The path to Seokdaeam Rock
The path to Seokdaeam Rock, the first of the four days of the year
The snow hadn't melted on the mountain ridge, so the head monk of Simwonsa Temple opposed the climb.
But the group led by Monk Namryun from Pohang
decided to push ahead with the hike.
To remember the winter days,
the path where the fallen leaves adorned the mountain path majestically.
On a spring day, you would see the azaleas blooming in the valleys,
but forgetting winter, we climbed the mountain.
As we climbed for a while, the sun rose in the sky,
making the valley path feel like a reminder of spring.
The only things visible from the mountain were birds in flight,
and the acorn trees, enveloped in fallen leaves, were competing to grow taller,
as if witnessing the harmony of the heavens.
As if distant clouds were passing by,
we sent off the trees that adorned Bogae Mountain.
The tree standing like a rock among the trees on Bogae Mountain On the way up the mountain, the path was covered in snow.
I slipped and fell, as if my steps had stopped, and those watching me fall again and again.
A monk who lived on the mountain was coming down.
He looked at me and said he knew me.
He stopped going down the mountain and started climbing again.
He told me to lean on my body, and I helped him climb.
A student from the Korea National Open University told me he wanted to climb up on his back.
But the slope was extremely slippery, and even though I said I would walk,
he remembered me trying to roll over, so I fell on his back.
For the first time in my life, I fell on the student's back.
But soon, he got off.
A path with melted snow appeared on the mountain path.
Watching the path from afar,
Namryun, the monk, muttered as he climbed.
He said he had fallen and his foot had been cut off.
As I climbed, I saw Seokdaeam Hermitage, and I could feel my mind becoming at ease.
Arriving at Seokdaeam Hermitage, I saw the monk Semin, who was the head monk,
and the monk who had been climbing that year. This is the third time I remember the day.
They say the water at Seokdaeam is medicinal.
After paying my respects to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva,
I drank the medicinal water and my body feels at ease.
I told them it was a good thing to come to Seokdaeam.
They tried to remind me of the day we climbed the mountain.
We took some tea.
The monk from Simwonsa Temple, who had stopped us when we were about to climb the mountain,
knew he would be worried about us coming down.
But the moment we climbed Seokdaeam and thought of Simwonsa Temple,
we looked out at the Military Demarcation Line and began the tea ceremony.
After completing the peace tea ceremony, we prepared to descend the mountain.
The monk from Seokdaeam was so deep in thought that his sermon was long.
The sun, visible in the distance, was rising into the sky.
It was time for the sun, which had come to the mountain, to pass over it.
Going down the mountain was more frightening than climbing it.
