명사구
가. 간단정의
명사와 그 명사를 수식하는 형용사 및 형용사 상당어로 이루어진 구인데
명사구는 명사가 대장 즉 중심이라 noun phrase 명사구라 부르며
문장 구조상 명사만 쓰이는 자리인 주어/보어/목적/전목/동격 자리에 쓰이며
부사역할을 하는 명사구는 부사자리에 쓰여 동사를 수식한다
주의;
a boy 관사 + 명사
a young boy 관사 + 형용사 + 명사
a boy /with a short hair 관사 + 명사 + 형역 전치사구
a boy /walking in the park 관사 + 명사 + 현분사구/형용사구
a boy /to get to know 관사 + 명사 + 형역 부정사구
a boy //who is tall and handsome. 관사 + 명사 + 형용사절
어떤 형용사적인 수식어가 붙었던지 중심은 명사인 소년이기에 명사구라 불리고
이런 형태의 명사구를 문장 구조상 필수요소인 주어/보어/목적에, 비필수요소인 전목/동격에 쓴다
다. 문장 구조상의 역할
He is [a boy]. 보어
[A boy with a short hair] came to see you. 주어
She met [a boy who is tall and handsome]. 목적
She talks /with a boy. 전목
명사구의 부사적인 역할
This is a lesson () I had to learn /the hard way.
라. 동격명사구 appositive
1. 제한동격; 앞 명사 의미를 뒤에온 명사구로 제한하는 역할이다
John the Baptist 침례자 요한
John 과 the Baptist 똑같은 내용이라 뒤에 쓰인 명사구 the Baptist 가 John 과 동격이라하고
동격은 형용사 역할이라 하므로 의미는 '침례자인 잔'이 된다
형절로 하면 John who is the Baptist 로 된다
He later wrote the book God and the Astronomers, in which he pointed to five lines of evidence //that supported his conclusion.
the book God and the Astronomers 에서 제한동격 명사구는 콤마없이 쓰인 God and the Astronomers 이고
앞 명사인 book 을 제한수식하여 그가 쓴 여러책 중에서 God and the Astronomers 라는 제목하의 책이라는 제한설명이고
형절로 쓰면 the book that is called God and the Astronomers 라 하겠다
2. 비제한 동격 명사구; 콤마로 분리된 명사구로 앞명사에 대한 설명을 추가하는 삽입구 역할이다
Older gas ranges have burners that are ignited by a pilot light, a small flame that burns continuously.
위 예문에서 콤마 뒤에 쓰인 명사구a pilot light, a small flame that burns continuously 가대충 읽어만 보십시요
As we've seen, a noun phrase has a noun as its Head. Determiners and adjective phrases usually constitute the pre-Head string:
관사나 형용사 + 명사로된 명사구로 명사구의 중심되는 단어를 headnoun 머리명사라 하는데
저는 종종 우두머리/ 대장/족장 명사 등등으로 부르고 밑줄로 표시합니다
[the children]
[happy children]
[the happy children]
In theory at least, the post-Head string in an NP can be indefinitely long:
명사구는 형용사 뿐만 아니라 구나 절로 대장명사를 수식하여 무지 길어질 수 있습니다
[the dog // that chased the cat that killed the mouse that ate the cheese that was made from the milk that came from the cow that...]
Fortunately, they are rarely as long as this in real use.
허나 실상 저래 길게 쓰면 simplicity 간결성 위반으로 영작 빵점 맞으니 않쓰죠
The
Head of an NP does not have to be a common or a proper noun.
Recall that pronouns are a subclass of nouns. This means that
pronouns, too, can function as the Head of an NP:
대명사도 명사니 명사구에 쓰이나 대명사는 전치수식을 못 받고 후치 수식만 받는다
If the Head is a pronoun, the NP will generally consist of the Head only. This is because pronouns do not take determiners or adjectives, so there will be no pre-Head string. However, with some pronouns, there may be a post-Head string:
[Those who arrive late] cannot be admitted until the interval
Similarly, numerals, as a subclass of nouns, can be the Head of an NP:
[Two of my guests] have arrived
[The first to arrive] was John
Headnoun
Noun phrases normally consist of a headnoun,
which is optionally modified ("pre-modified" if the modifier is placed
before the noun; "post-modified" if the modifier is placed after the
noun). Possible modifiers include:
determiners:
articles (the, a), demonstratives (this, that), numerals (two, five,
etc.), possessives (my, their, etc.), and quantifiers (some, many,
etc.). In English, determiners are usually placed before the noun;
ㄴ. 형용사 adjectives 및 대용형용사(구/절)
당근 명사수식 전문인 형용사가 명사 앞뒤 전후 좌우에서 명사를 수식/보필한다
후치수식은 '/'빗금으로 구분하여 수식어임을 표시한다
the red ball,
a beautiful girl,
a dancing girl,
the broken window,
something /to eat
the girl /waiting at the door to your left
the fact/ proven by the scientists
the man /to see about the job
those //who want to learn
* 종종 명사 뒤에 오는 형용사도 있다
something /beautiful
old /enough
ㄷ. 전치사구 complements, in the form of a prepositional phrase
전치사구의 2개 역할중 하나인 명사수식 형역전구는 명사뒤에 쓰이나
대용형용사이므로 형용사처럼 해석하면 되는데
우리말은 형용사가 항상 명사 앞에 위치하므로 영어 어순과는 반대로 해석하나
영어니 영어식으로 하여 명사 + 대용 형용사 순서로 이해하자
the student /of physics, 물리학 배우는 또는 물리전문인 그 학생
man / in black 검은색옷을 입은 남자
ㄹ. that 등 관계사절(형절); a That-clause, wh 절
형절 역시 대용형용사 역할 하므로 명사 뒤에서 수식 역할 하며 관계대명사로도 불리나
관대절이 아닌 형절도 있다
즉 관대절은 접속사가 대신한 종절의 한 요소 자리가 비어있어서 불완전 문이라 하는데
어떤 that 절의 경우 완전문인 형절로 동격절이라고도 불리며
명사에 붙어 명사구를 구성한다
the claim that he made ( 빠진요소/목적 ) 관대절/형절; 그가 주장한 주장
the claim// that the earth is round 내용설명 형절/완전절; 지구는 둥글다 하는 주장
절은 '//' 쌍빗금으로 구분한다
*수식구 중 형용사나 복합명사는 머리명사 앞에, 수식구나 절은 뒤에 온다
수식어들 modifiers;
1. pre-modifiers 명사앞에온 수식어 (전치수식)
if placed before the noun and usually either as nouns (the university student) or adjectives (the beautiful lady),
*보통 복합 명사라고 하는 명사 + 명사의 경우 앞에온 명사가 뒤에온 명사를 수식한다하기도 함
2. post-modifiers 명사뒤에온 수식어/구/절(후치수식)
if placed after the noun. A postmodifier may be either a prepositional phrase (the man with long hair) or a relative clause (the house where I live).
post-modifier 후치 수식어로는 전치사구와 형절이 대다수고 분사구와 부정사구도 종종 쓴다
The
difference between modifiers and complements is that complements
complete the meaning of the noun; complements are necessary, whereas
modifiers are optional because they just give additional information
about the noun.
보어로 온 형용사와 명사 수식어로 온 형용사의 다른점은
보어로 온 형용사는 생략하면 문장이 완성되지 못하나 수식어로 온 형용사는 생략해도 문장은 구조상 여전히 완전함
She is beautiful. => She is ?
She is a beautiful girl. => She is a girl.
다. 문장내의 역할
ㄱ. 주어
[The girl /in the blue Hawaiian shirt] is my friend.
[ The taller /of the two cheerleaders /by the water cooler] is an honor student.
[The stock market’s summer swoon] turned into a dramatic rout Monday as the Dow Jones industrial average plunged.
{Irresponsible people //who don’t know [what they are talking about]} twist them /every which way. 형절과 명절을 포함한 명구
ㄴ. 보어
This is [the place //where I was born.] 명사 + 형절

I am [a boy /from your home town.] 명사 + 전치사구
ㄷ. 목적
The boy ate [the apple/ in the pie.]
The boy ate the apple / in the summer.
The boy ate the apple / in a hurry.
I want [the book /on the table /in the kitchen.]
* 전치사구 in the pie 는 명사 apple 수식으로 명사구의 일부가 되나
in the summer /in a hurry 는 비록 명사 apple 뒤에 있지만 동사 ate 수식이라 부사역할이다
on the table 는 book 수식, in the kitchen 은 table 수식이므로 모두 명사구 소속이다
ㄹ. 목보
We chose him chairman /of our club.
I think him a brilliant musician.
s v o oc
ㅁ. 전목
write the information /in the printed area of the disc /with a nonsolvent-based felt-tip pen
he had heard /about the police chase and called for an eyewitness account.
The Litany of the Saints pleads with God to deliver His faithful /from a sudden and unprepared-for death.
ㅅ. 부사역할 명사구
형태는 명사구이지만 역할상으로는 동사수식/설명 부사역할이다
Can you come / tomorrow morning?
Do you see that fighting comes up / an awful lot?
So Stricklin stayed with the plane /a little longer.
their brothers and sisters were great at least/ some of the time
If your descriptions could use some help, consider using appositive phrases /the next time that you write.

Then you will know which way to go,
since you have never been this way before.
Q. What’s your least favorite airport?
Our car /having developed engine trouble, we stopped for the night at a roadside rest area.
The weather /being warm and clear, we decided to have a picnic.
Victory assured, the fan stood and cheered during the last five minutes of the game.
***한국 영문법에는 아예 안쓰이나 미국영문법에는 널리 쓰이는 명칭이 절대구입니다
ㄴ. 동격구 appositive phrase;
콤마로 분리된 명사구/삽입구로 선행 명사수식/형역
동격명사구는 앞 명사와 주어와 보어 관계의 문장으로 쓸수 있고
관계사를 써서 선행사와 형절의 관계로도 쓸 수 있다
Older gas ranges have burners that are ignited by a pilot light, a small flame that burns continuously.
* a pilot light = a small flame that burns continuously
=>a pilot light is a small flame that burns continuously.
=> a pilot light, which is a small flame that burns continuously.
McAninch, a 34-year-old ex-con with multiple felony arrests and convictions, was currently out on parole after serving five years for burglary.
* McAninch = a 34-year-old ex-con with multiple felony arrests and convictions,
=> McAninch, who is a 34-year-old ex-con with multiple felony arrests and convictions,
동격은 명사, 명사구, 동명사구, 부정사구 및 명사절 등의 형태로
앞서 나온 명사를 rename 재설명/추가설명하는 역할이고
Appositive (App) - a noun or pronoun that renames another noun
컴마가 있으면 비제한 동격/삽입구 역할이고 없으면 제한동격/한정역할이 된다
Was John the Baptist Elijah? 제한동격 명사구 the Baptist
My favorite sport, baseball, takes a great deal of efforts. 비제한 동격명사
This letter is from John, the elder.비제한 동격 명사구
My favorite sport, running 3 miles a day, takes a great deal of efforts. 비제한 동격 동명사구
My greatest ambition, to climb Mt. Everest, has directed my whole life. 비제한 동격 부정사구
if we have no doubt //that He hears our voices 제한/한정적인 역할로 쓰인 동격that 절
It is a pleasure to meet you. 대명사/it=부정사구의 경우로 부정사구를 진주어라 하지만 it 와 동격이라고 하기도 한다
의미상 필수인 제한동격의 경우 동격을 제외하면 의미가 불명확하나
비제한 동격인 경우는 생략해도 기본적인 의미는 변하지 않는다

동격 명사구와 독립명사구(독립분사구문) 대비비교
아래 문장에 쓰인 동격구는 동격 명사구라 하면서도
The Trocmés lived in Le Chambon in Vichy France,
a part of France not occupied by the Nazis, but run by the collaborationist French Vichy government.
마. 명사 상당어구 (대용명사)
형태상으로는 명사구는 아니나 역할상 명사역할 하는 명사 대용 어구
ㄱ. 부정사구; 문장에서 주어, 보어, 목적, 목적보어 자리에 들어가서 명사 역할
Try to avoid talking /about stuff that would embarrass another person.
the person wants you to keep the information a secret.
The best way to avoid being a part of the gossip mill in your school is to steer clear of kids who gossip.
ㄴ. 동명사구; 주어, 보어, 목적, 목적보어 및 전치사의 목적에 명사처럼 쓰임
"I like hanging out with Jake.
Hanging out with Jake is fun.
I learned a lot from hanging out with Jake.
Flossing involves using
a piece /of waxy string /called dental floss /to get in between your
teeth and remove food particles //that your toothbrush can't reach
***부정사구와 동명사구가 둘다 명사역할 하므로 호환적으로 쓸 수 있긴하나
서로의 성격이 다른지라 쓰임새가 다를 수 있고 의미가 비슷하나 다를 수도 있음
즉 동명사는 끝난일, 진행되는 일 또는 전적으로 명사형으로 쓰이나
부정사는 미래성, 잠재성, 추측성 등의 동작상황에 쓰인다
