Sermon: Honor your father and your mother
(Deuteronomy 5:16) Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
God, we love you.
God, we thank you.
<Body>
May is the month of family.
Today is the second Sunday in May, so-called ‘Parent’s Sunday.’
I believe all of you are repaying your parents with all your hearts.
Recall that today is for your parents.
Please, meditate the Word of God and remember your parents’ love today.
1. God ordered us to honor our parents in the 5th commandment.
1) The 1st commandment to serve neighbors is to honor your own parents.
(Ephesians 6:2) "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise--
The 6th commandment is not to murder. The 7th commandment is not to commit adultery. The 8th commandment is not to steal. the 9th command- ment is not to give false testimony against your neighbor. And, the 10th commandment is not to covet your neighbor’s house.
Since the 5th commandment precedes the other five commandments, it is the most important among the commandments to serve your neighbors.
2) The Word to love your neighbors includes your honor to your parents.
(Ephesians 6:2) ‘Honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'
The second important rule next to helping your spouse is to honor your parents. Loving your children is the third important issue.
3) You may be healthy and live long on the earth when you honor your parents.
(Deuteronomy 5:16) Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
The second important rule next to helping your spouse is to honor your parents. Loving your children is the third important issue.
4) Everything goes well with you when you honor your parents.
Quite the opposite, everything goes wrong with you when you dishonor your father and your mother.
5) It may go well with you and you may enjoy long life on the earth.
(Ephesians 6:1-3) "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-- "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
6) Children must learn repay their parents and grandparents.
(1 Timothy 5:4) But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
2. You are under curse if you dishonor your parents.
1) You will be cursed if you dishonor your parents.
(Deuteronomy 27:16) "Cursed is the man who dishonors his father or his mother." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"
2) Rebellious sons were put to death when they disobey their parents
(Deuteronomy 21:18 and 21) [18] If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, [21] Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
3) You will be cursed if you rob your father or mother
(Proverbs 28:24) He who robs his father or mother and says, "It's not wrong"-- he is partner to him who destroys.
4) Even Jesus warns you to be put to death if you curse your parents.
(Matthew 15:4) For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
3. Set up a plan to honor your and your spouse’s parents.
1) Make phone calls to them frequently and check their regards often.
2) Visit them as often as you can.
3) Give sufficient allowance to them.
4) Let them not worry about living expenses.
5) Help them welcome Jesus so that they can be delivered.
Asking a pastor in neighborhood to preach the Word to them is a wonderful alternative approach.
You have to do your best when they are alive. It is no use regretting after they go away.
<Poet> On Mother’s Day by Kim, Dae-Sik
Parents’ Day comes every year, but I am always sorry,
since I have not done anything good to them.
It would not be so painful as now,
if I had served them a little bit when they were alive.
I am much ashamed of myself
who hurt them with words again and again.
So many times in my youth I have been to the clinics
because of poor health conditions.
The best cure was my mother’s hand which rubbed my tummy all night long.
I cried out anchoring on the ground when I lost mom’s hands in the street.
Mother. You always gave love to me who are so silly and worthless.
Mother, my mother, I am missing you so much.
Today I feel like I want to go your tomb and cry aloud to remember you.
<Poet> Father by Lee, Moon-Jo
Father never told that he was hard,
no matter how tired he was.
I have known that he is never burdened.
Father never told that he was unwell,
no matter how painful he was.
I have known that he is never sick.
Father never told that he was broke,
no matter how penniless he was.
I have known that he is always rich.
Now I am as old as then father
and become a father of my kids,
I’ve got to understand
that my father who looked reliable and strong like a Zelkova tree
might have been hard, painful and penniless sometimes.
He didn’t say the words of phew, ouch or clink,
because he knew he was a householder,
because he was afraid to make the family hard,
and because he didn’t want them disappointed.
<Conclusion>
The Word of God is surely correct. Children must honor their parents.
I want all of you to obey the 5th commandment so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in everything.
Hallelujah!
